Friday, 10th July -- Gonna be gorgeous here today, high of 72 degrees. Yes, hate me, but to tell you the truth, your intense dislike is worth it to live in a climate that's simply perfect for me. Hike today, don't know where yet, but can't wait.

Work, work, work -- so, you ask, what else is new? Answer -- not much, really, everything's coming along. I'll do some virtual touring after DEADLOCK comes out the 28th, which should be fun. I'll expect all of you to come visit on the first one, and ask really smart questions. It'll be Poison Pen, a mystery bookstore in Phoenix -- it'll be on a Saturday afternoon -- August 1st, at 1:00 p.m., I believe. So mark your calendars -- I'll keep you posted.

Everyone, it's the end of yet another lovely (and hopefully not TOOO hot) week. Whatever you do today, do not forget to SMILE, have some spring in your step, SBB, and speak to people even if they don't speak to you. You'll probably see people without masks -- simply turn your back until they pass -- I do that with people with masks, as they do me --
Okay, I want one joke from each of you. Make it good.

July 5, 2020

Sunday, 5th July -- What a glorious day -- yesterday, the 4th -- had yummy Mexican at the Cantina, went for a drive along the beautiful coastline, did a bit of hiking, talked to family, even saw their mostly-smiling faces. Today -- it's a big hike and lots of basketball -- Yep, the 2018 play-offs for the Golden State Warriors -- hadn't seen most of the games since I was at the OBX, so it's all fresh and new and exciting.
Whatever you do today, do it with optimism and gratitude. You walk? You're grateful you're well and can walk. You see people who aren't doing well in your neighborhood -- speak to them, take them some brownies, be kind. Lift their spirits, let your up mood bring theirs up as well. But most of all today, you want to be happy you're smart and take the pandemic seriously -- many don't, and that is so incredibly sad and frankly, incomprehensible. When you're out in a story, make sure everyone around you has a mask on -- do not ever feel embarrassed or too intimidated to tell someone who will be in close proximity to you for even a couple of minutes -- put on your mask, please. If they're nasty, who cares? Get out of there, speak to the manager. The story out of Melbourne, Australia -- security guards playing cards with people in quarantine in a hotel -- the whole city is on major lockdown, thanks to those several people who were idiots.
Most important? It's Sunday, a day to sleep in and to do a lot of stretching before you have a nice Sunday walk. Don't forget - SBB.

July 2, 2020

Thursday, 2nd July --What excitement. I'm heading into San Francisco this afternoon for my yearly eye appointment. It's been six months since I've been across the Golden Gate, and goodness, what to wear? I mean, it's a professional visit, right? Should I have bought a designer face mask to show I'm still cool? This will take thought. I'll consult Eli, he's the fashion maven -- although I don't know really what he thinks of the various face masks.
So, no big hammie-screaming, heart-thumping hike today and it's funny how weird that sounds. I mean the no hike, not the hammies and the heart. Hiking is something I now look forward to every day.
Please tell me, every single one of you, that you're keeping fit and safe and getting yourself strong and stronger yet. It's so important.
I'm going to post a photo that will make all of you stare and shake your heads and just imagine a hundred years from now. Yes, I'll post it today.
SBB --

July 1, 2020

WOW -- Wednesday, 1st July -- Mid-summer and what are you doing? Do you have something special planned for the first day of this gorgeous summer month? I bet you've never had that question before, but different times call for different perspectives and plans. So if your perspective hasn't landed the way mine has, give it a try -- drink a cup of coffee/tea and think "what am I going to do on this historical first of July? Have a pre-4th BBQ in the backyard with neighbors and family? Of will I walk to the grocery store and buy something fun, like a new can of cat food? All right, a donut or a bagel with a carton of cream cheese? Whatever it is you do, make it original (to you), make it special -- you do not want to forget July 1st of this very strange year of 2020 --
Now, I'm not bragging -- really -- actually I'm both proud and appalled to realize I walked 17,000 steps yesterday, over 8 miles -- this is a first and to say the legs and feet are giving me pleading looks is an understatement. Rest today, well, 40 minutes on the bike, but easy, while watching basketball and reading. And then my something special -- going to Seal Rock in the city and watching all the seals cavort.
So who's hit more steps than ever before? Who wants to? (If you said yes, maybe you and I should have our heads examined)
Stay safe, wear your masks, and never forget, no French kissing strangers.

June 30, 2020

Tuesday, 30th June -- Last day, folks, for the lovely month of June 2020, a very strange June, but I'll miss it. It's sort of comforting, like introducing you to summer, slowly and pleasantly.
I received my author copies of DEADLOCK yesterday -- Oh my, they're gorgeous, vibrant colors and when I opened it there were so many words -- alas, no pictures, but there's me on the back looking kick-ass (it's always fun when Charles, the photographer, says, "Okay, let's see some bike macho now, show the world you're one tough mama)-- you'll have to tell me what you think.
Today we're having a birthday party here -- only 4 people but lots of HCF -- avocado eggrolls, salads, I'm homemaking pizza, and strawberry cheesecake -- LOTS OF PRESENTS -- it'll be so much fun and such a different activity --

About the photo I posted with the lovely golden fields of the very old historic rifle range -- I left out a rather critical word and that word is DOWN -- from where I was taking the photo, it was straight DOWN --
Everyone, it's outside with the lot of you, sit on the porch for a few minutes, and then walk through your neighborhood, stopping and chattering and being an all around very cool person. SBB

June 29, 2020

Monday, 29th June -- Big gorgeous Monday and all through the house Eli & Peyton are meowing their heads off for their morning snack, but I'm holding tough. One of them (don't know which) has an upset stomach, so that means both get bland food for a couple of days. Is this what you do?
A truncated walk yesterday. For some reason my middle back was twitching -- never had that before -- so only about a half mile before being smart rather than macha -- No twitches today -- I wonder if it was the flautas -- hmm -
I want to see photos of gardens, really cool if you put pets in the photos in the gardens, okay?
It's always lovely to have the weekend off -- of course that means there's no looming deadline, so I can indeed relax and veg if I want do or get out there and run a marathon -- so many lovely choices. Today, back to work -- I'm taking one of the plots and running it all out, then I'll go to the second plot, write it and then interweave -- an experiment, we'll see if it works out well.
WALK, and don't forget, SBB

June 28, 2020

Sunday, 28th June -- Perfect today, high of 71 and SUNNY -- the fog is gorgeous, don't get me wrong, but sometimes, like today when I'm going hiking, a bit of sun if really okay.
Lunch yesterday at The Cantina -- good to see everyone out, lots of smiles, particularly from our usual waiters. I hadn't had flautas for a very long time -- what do you guys think of flautas? They had new chips, still can't decide if I like them as much. But the salsa -- they do have the best salsa in the county.
I'm glad you guys like the roses -- I have quite a few different varieties and of course now can't remember what they're called. I was told over and over it's impossible to grow roses by the water -- NOT! -- I really think being friends with the head of the Minion Rose Counsel helps plus I do daily chants to the "head" roses, you know, the ones whose scent is so outstanding you have to stop and sniff for a good three minutes.
Eli's post beneath his photo -- he's talking about a good friend, Juniper (well, actually, his mom and me), who's so gorgeous Eli wants to lick his face off, if he could have the chance, which, alas he never will.
Get out there today -- lots of walking, lots of talking with neighbors, lots of Zooming with family you can't see and haven't seen for quite a while. Who has a quarantine book club? Film club? Try a film club, goodness, then you really get to know people by the films they pick. Big suggestion: Do not
select as your film one that's political -- AT ALL. I mean, why would you want to raise someone's blood pressure because they disagree with you?
Try for 2 miles today -- and be sure to stretch before you get out there and hit the pavement or the gravel of the grass -- and never forget SBB -

June 26, 2020

Friday, 26th June -- I'll post a video of the incredible walk along the Marin Headlands I took yesterday - the views, makes your heart thump loud and you start singing --
Now, this is something that works for me -- see what you think. And yes, -- both guys and gals, doesn't matter -- I weigh every single morning. Why? I've found that if I'm up a little bit, I can stop it that day, cut back, exercise more. If I'm the same, that is, my goal weight, I have a big smile. If I'm down a little bit, I get to eat whatever sounds good. I have a three-pound upward limit -- if I hit that, and yes, I sometimes do, I really cut back until my weight is back to target. I've learned from friends that if you stop weighing, you automatically start gaining weight (you don't want to see what's really going on and feel guilty, so that's why you avoid weighing.. So give this some thought, again, it's what works for me.

Work today -- well, that's not news. Still reworking a scene with a fiancee who's a piece of work --
SBB and get out there and WALK.

June 22, 2020

Monday, 22nd June -- Smack me, I forgot, yesterday was the Summer Solstice and for this year, it means I missed dancing around a fire maybe wearing a white sheet with a belt to hold it in place, barefoot (with the French toenails, of course), maybe pouring special spiked Solstice punch down my gullet -- sigh -- well, next year, maybe a BIG group of us will get together and dance our feet off.
I told you the Tunnel is finally open -- leads through Rodeo Valley, left over the headlands and straight ahead to the Golden Gate, and out to Rodeo Beach -- well, we were so excited, got there -- and there were at least 75 cars lined up, back nearly to the Golden Gate -- On the other hand it was Sunday -- will try again tomorrow and let you know (although I don't know that you'd particularly care)
I hope all of you had a fulfilling Sunday -- we did walking/strolling on top of Strawberry -- Olivet University there, never seen it up close before -- very lovely.

Okay, work today -- nose to that grindstone, wherever that saying came from -- what about you guys? I know you'll walk, you'll be sure to have SBB, you'll do arm rolls (guys and girls) -- and you'll have a taco for lunch -- if you're worthy.

June 21, 2020

Sunday, 21st June -- YEA -- yesterday the powers that be finally opened the tunnel (the only access) to Rodeo Beach, actually, an entire area with a gazillion trails that go everywhere including back to the Golden Gate -- Haven't been there in two and a half months -- it'll be grand. Okay, bored you to death, sorry, but I'm sort of excited about something NEW, well, almost new.
Did everyone get the newsletter? If you did maybe a little chuckle?
How many think we could possibly have a vaccine by Christmas? And here's the question: what about the anti-vaccine folk?
Enough about the fricking virus. Today is a gorgeous June Sunday with, hopefully, sunshine, a BBQ grill beckoning, neighbors all ready for corn on the cob, masks for everyone, but who cares? Whatever you do, do it with optimism and a smile and belief that we'll all survive this -- and talk about a life-long memory.
WALK -- SBB
