Enid Blyton + Nancy Drew = this book

Syrupy characters with no dimension. Everyone is so good, trustworthy, hardworking, generous, kind, honest, lovely.. plus the story is about a plucky young lady who is all of the above AND pretty. Sigh.

In terms of literature, this is a washout. It is pure escapism.

The book begins with a gunshot. On the first page! And yet, there is no mention of it as yet. There are so many characters - hockey is one too - it is a little hard to keep track. There are tragedies in everyone's lives. It is all very confusing at this point.

And yet, so interesting. I love Fredrik Backman's writing.
