I have come to the sad realisation that I am an idiot. I bought all the books in this series without trying them out. I was intrigued by the OTHER series by this author, so bought this one instead? IDK, why am I like this?

Anyway, this incredible premise is rapidly getting massacred by flat characters, no world-building, and monotonous writing.

(I'll read it all though. Because idiot.)

Utterly dismal yet engrossing. We are tranfixed by horror as a species, aren't we?

Picked this up to read at night, just before sleeping. What a mistake it has been.

These novellas are not bad; quite the contrary. But they aren't easy reading. In fact, I finished the first one last time, and I couldn't sleep because I was stewing about the book descriptions I saw on here.

Angela's story is NOT about infidelity. It is about a woman who is liberated from an abusive husband. Her body is her own.

"We agree with the Hindus that one of the aims of a well-lived life is Kama, or sensual pleasure."

I'm sorry, but what Hinduism is this? Can't be the repressed culture that I know and love so dearly. 🙄

Second jolt of surprise, as I read a mantra often chanted at Sathya Sai's gatherings.

Imagine my surprise that Shiva has made an appearance in this book.

the writing is evocative but in a clumsy way. like when you write for the first time ever and you use yourself as a template for the protagonist. oh and far too much scenery and adjectives.

The author is a great writer, but a rambling storyteller. Imagine taking up almost 10% of the book in describing ambience. It is the first two chapters.

If this were Tolkein, you would expect similar real estate describing forest and greenery; perhaps 5 pages on just grass. But his books were also enormous. There was ample space for it. In 260 pages thpugh? Not so much.

I don't know where this story is going, but absolutely loving Eleanor's archaic language. I guess I'm tired of simplified writing that abounds everywhere. This is a literary mental workout. And it is amazing!
