Apparently I am reading this now. At chapter 6 I finally noticed the chapters are named for the pov character.

when you preorder cuz hype and one day it shows up and you're wtf is this?

There are certain types of "obstacles" I'm completely not here for in fiction. I can't say they're "unrealistic" exactly, this sort of shit happens in any organization, I expect. I haven't really thought about it, but whether it's because they're cheap, inevitably have unsatisfying solutions, are uninteresting, or just too much like real life, I'm really just not fucking interested in seeing them in my fiction.

I don't recall ever being pissed off by easter eggs before.

Not in love with the rapid pov switches.

Airport thriller level stuff, structure-wise. Often that annoys me, we'll see.

Always more critical of the writing on a reread :/ Also irritated the kindle edition I have seems to be missing the inter-scene whitespace. I keep getting a few sentences into the next scene and becoming disoriented before I realize it's jumped. But, choice of weapon here is richer given the context of Weather from Galactic North.

"Weather" - 5 stars - It started out kind of weak, tbh. Lack of tension. But at the end I wanted very much for it not to be over. I want to see what happens next for these characters. Oh, and we see inside a conjoiner drive. O.o :) Next up The Prefect!

A Spy In Europa - 3.5 - Lacking in sense of direction. Not terrible, but meh.

One more story to go before The Prefect.

Night Passage - Very good but I didn't really like the way it ended.

Night Passage - Shroud! New chars, good voice, different from Reynold's usual. Weird, I/You pov.

Glacier - 4.? - Nevil, Galiana, Felka again. Nevil and the Conjoiners have arrived at an extra-solar earthlike planet, only to realize someone else got there 100 years before. And they're all dead. Mostly. There's a popsicle. Really good, but with some burrs.

Well this one's managing to be oddly offensive. Sexist argument and then "sissies". Also odd: people who traveled through space as frozen embryos, raised by robots on an alien world, are referred to as "Americans".

Great Wall of Mars - Nevil Clavain goes on a diplomatic mission to a Conjoiner nest on Mars. Excellence ensues. :) Also, Galiana, Sandra Voi appear. - 5

Not feeling this. The MC, Faust, is tolerable, but there's no there there for anyone else yet, and I don't like any of the particular stick figures standing in for other characters so far, or the Las Vegas setting, or the magical elements which seem like some stereotypical evangelical's ideas of same. It's just giving me flashbacks to the Starsky and Hutch episode with the satanists, or the 1980s D&D moral panic.

Guessing the main character is in the 20-40 year old range, but I could be wrong. Not bad though, so far.

I now know more about random tunnel dweller than I do about the main character.

Still have a few quibbles with the characterization of the lead, but this seems better than Child of Fire so far.

So far, so good.

This is certainly not what I was expecting when I started this...

cheese ballz

Well, what do you know. GR has this and Trouble Follows Me listed as the "Chet Gordon" series. My biggest question so far in this book has been who the fuck is Chet Gordon. Well at 41% he's finally been mentioned. Still off page, but at least he exists.

To limbo it goes... I just hate this author's writing style.

So far this is surprisingly better than Macdonald's fourth book The Three Roads, but the writing is definitely uneven, sometimes with very good lines appearing in the same paragraph as incredibly bad ones.
