Well, what do you know. GR has this and Trouble Follows Me listed as the "Chet Gordon" series. My biggest question so far in this book has been who the fuck is Chet Gordon. Well at 41% he's finally been mentioned. Still off page, but at least he exists.

So far this is surprisingly better than Macdonald's fourth book The Three Roads, but the writing is definitely uneven, sometimes with very good lines appearing in the same paragraph as incredibly bad ones.

Pronzini's intro is such BS, and I expect anyone who's read much Macdonald will roll their eyes at it. As for the novel itself: uneven, but not awful ... so far.
