idk why the hell this indigenous alt history was written by an englishman, but i am certainly enjoying it. idk if in the end i'll think it's at all comparable to chabon's yiddish policeman's union, but if i had to pick a comp title that's all i can come up with at this point.

this is a library book and I already want to buy a copy. didn't get to read much today, hopefully tomorrow goes better

i don't know when anything is happening in this book. it's sad though how much he was made to feel ashamed of his deafness growing up.

There may have been a historical period when it was possible for a guy with whiskers to pull a knife and plunge it into somebody's back, but that was a long time ago. Nowadays it couldn't be done. - Archie exonerates the doctor. >.> He can't possibly be the murderer, he has a mustache!

still more focused on family history, a bit about learning he was deaf and getting his first hearing aids in this chapter. (he can hear some frequencies so they didn't realize when he was a baby)

there are passages where the writing is fantastic, but then there are bits that are just wtf? like a paragraph about the water tank that has no obvious connection to the paragraphs before or after. and then he finds raccoons got in the house that mentions food containers from "last night". none were mentioned, he went from the restaurant to the barn where he's staying, why/when/how did they get in the house?
