very quiet. very time jumpy. doesn't feel like much has happened, though i think some of that is because things haven't been linked up yet. liking it so far, though it's definitely not a page turner.

on the slow and quiet side so far, but not bad

This is dark for a "YA" gay coming of age novel. Good though, and it managed to surprise me with a plot development I don't think was mentioned in the sequel.

The funny thing is, despite having read the sequel first, I have no idea if this is going to have a happy ending or not. That's partly why I haven't read it sooner.

on a sentence level, the writing is delightful, but maybe part of why i'm dragging this out so long is i don't enjoy and am not in the headspace for something where 90%+ of the text is trying to manipulate and deceive. the last chapter just pissed me off and i don't even give a crap about any of these people. deceit in dialog is one thing, an epistolary novel of nothing but is another.

ok, finally feeling kind of invested. guess this book needs a really long warming up period.

Mr Collins has arrived, very exciting! Not exactly loving it so far. The narrative distance doesn't give me the sort of connection to any of the characters I usually need to pull me through. I don't remember, but I'm probably farther than I made it last time.

We'll see if we can make it this time. Bit unsure about starting a second classic while I've got DL in the slow road currently reading slot, but I'm hoping my interest in the new Lee Welch Mr. Collins spin off will carry me through. If not I'll just have to watch the Ben Fensome version. His is the only adaptation I'm interested in.

this still sucks. but still reading (or skimming) cuz it works to fill idle moments the other book is too good for. earlier when i first started thinking i'd dnf this, i still wanted to know what would happen. i'm now doubting anything of note is going to happen at all.

so far seems like $2 very well spent. i like the voice a lot. have his other book, flux, but never got around to it.

how is it possible to make a gay thief this boring? like, I kinda still wanna know what happens, but omg, so dull. i'm just killing time at this point until I have a good block of time to start something else. and the "magic" seems so superfluous in this, is it just an excuse not to bother with research or historical accuracy in a real world historic setting?

still probably going to dnf this, but too tired to pick something new after the baseball book, so read a bit more of it. the pacing is sooooo bad. hard to believe this came after the other books i read by powell.

think the author forgot one of the characters was present there. good tho.
