This feels like the "No Easy Day" novel of religious writing where person writing has banked on public curiosity and traded a piece of their professional integrity for a book deal. Especially in that it sacrifices the clinical distance of a research document in favor of being readable to the masses. It is a very easy, narrative NF read.

The complete opposite of one of my goodreads friends, I dragged through the first half, but am loving the second. I really like the chapters set in Jerusalem, but I like Maragita's strange adventures as well. It was descriptive in the first half, but the Jerusalem and Margarita chapters seem more atmospheric (they're not, I think, it just seems like it...maybe because it's following a female? I don't know)

I don't think I'm going to make it through this. It feels so far out there right now that I'm digging into study guides to figure out what is going on and who these people are.

Totally surreal. I liked the chapter on Pontius Pilate because it gave an interesting alternate perspective of this character in history. Not quite as enchanted with the 1920's Russian poets..though there's definitely some dark humor there...

I'm usually not a big fan of short stories. A co-worker found this for me because of the Patricia McKillip story in it. I loved it - and I'm loving the others!

Ok, NOW I'm actually 25% - listening to the audiobook, I thought I was further along.
I ditched the audiobook - I couldn't stand the narration anymore. I picked up the book itself and started reading again - if you can make it past Chapter 6 and some of the ridiculousisms, there's a jump in writing quality and credibility that made it much better.

My ears feel like they're being stabbed. This narration is killing my soul- she sounds like Alicia Silverstone's character in Clueless.

Me: "this poor guy's never jumped out of an airplane before & he's strapped to a SEAL about to jump into the Indian Ocean." Co-worker: "I'd love to be strapped to a Navy SEAL!" lol It's all about perspective.

15 yr old tries to take on 3 people w/knives... sees a demon (who looks human) for the 1st time, then sees him get killed & she's just kind of.. weirded out...then notes one of the *murderers* is cute. Cute. Does he sparkle, too?
Your Mom's friend responds to your claim you're seeing invisible people with "you're an artist, you see things differently" and this doesn't make you take a moment?
hrm...

Plugging away at it, one lunch break at a time. I actually like it - I really like Levin - but I keep forgetting to sit down and spend some time with it!

This does not exist in eBook format, which is a crying freaking shame. I want to highlight every other line I read. This book as just as wildly creative as he's encouraging writers to be and there's some brilliant wisdom to it. I'll probably end up buying it, and inflicting a real highlighter on it. Maybe. I don't know if I can bring myself to actually DO that...

It seems like book 1, Morgon was very...human. Book 2, vengeful badass. Book 3, he's back to more human again. There's more humor in book 3, as well. I'm going to need to dig through some websites and reviews when I'm done. While I've read this before and loved it, I want to make sure I haven't missed anything this time around.

Love the audiobook narration, Nick Podehl is great fun to listen to...when the second narrator kicks in, the rant about "lol" just about killed me. Try to run when you're snickering out loud.

Dead silent room, we're both relaxing and I just burst out laughing. He wants to know what I'm laughing about and I can't read it to him because it's a huge freakin spoiler. Simultaneously frustrated and laughing...

This has so much good sense, put forth in a blunt, but not brutal, way. I love it and wish I'd read it years ago. It's made me think about a few things I've needed to change. It'd make an ideal gift for a college student.

When I feel like I'm not doing enough w/my life or I don't have a "purpose," I can remember someone made a career out of studying a bug, or turtle, or a type of shell.
Also... I'm comparably smart, for a human. I have not said: "we've overfished X to extinction...we should fish MORE!" & "what to do with this toxic waste? Barrel it up & throw it in the ocean!"
In comparison, bad life choices look pretty good.
