ugghhhh I like the main character but everyone around her is just gross. I can’t stand this. I give up.

I like the main character, but am badly annoyed by the supporting characters. Her friends give her hell about positive life choices. Candy has a one night stand with a man she picked up in a bar who gives her the bum rush out of his place the next morning & she goes on to say he's the genuine article, a "real good man" and a keeper. Seriously? 1 roll in the hay? Good lord...

This is taking me forever to work through - I've been plugging away at it here and there for a couple months - but it is a game changer.

There are some laugh out loud moments in here. I like library memoirs not just for the stories, but the comparison of how other library systems work, how they deal with their drama, and a taste of their culture.

Picked this up last night & would have kept right on reading all night if I didn't need to be up at 6. It's well written, empathetic & rings with both emotional & clinical truth (the author is a surgeon). The aftermath of her situation being leaked to her classmate as she tries to understand it herself is painful to read.

I initially thought this was going to be sketchy YA fic, but not YA & for 240 pages it's got some heft. I'm not totally into the premise (the man scribing it, etc.), but the story itself is really good & an eye opener. If you're an Outlander fan, try this as a side read after book 3. It's 100 yrs earlier and Barbados vs. Jamaica, but fits well as a tie in to history surrounding slavery.

I was just bitching to myself: are we EVER coming back around to Brianna, Jem and what not? And a chapter later, there they are. Finally! Don't get me wrong - I was really enjoying the Ian/William/Denny storylines and could have enjoyed the whole book following them, but when I was left hanging AGAIN (book 7...now book 8) with Jem and the Cool Kids it was feeling a little frustrating!

Was nearly unbearable at first - thought I was going to give up on it, but I've been pulled into Celeste, Madeline (sp? audiobook...) and Jane's stories. Clever, cutting, and surprisingly empathetic.

Beautiful writing. I'm heartbroken Kalanithi could not live to continue writing more books. But perhaps this was THE one he was meant to write and we were meant to read.

Short (1-5page) chapters make this a little easier to digest for those who are grieving. In pain, we can't take in much of anything at once, much less focus. This is well structured.

I've never read Abercrombie before. It took a bit to warm up (50 pages till the first 'holy crap!' awesome scene), but now that I'm in, I am loving his writing and have set everything else aside for the moment. This is set in an Earth-like land, but more "western" than "fantasy." There's grittiness and wonderfully sly, snide humor (fans of Joss Whedon might like it). Really love the characters.

I like to snack and read. Realized my mistake when I sat down with hummus and a rice cake and read a detailed description of a burn victim's autopsy. Erp!

I love this. LOVE this. Rick Steves has the difficult job of coaxing readers out of an insulated world view without sounding anti-American in the process. He's not going to walk the tightrope perfectly, but he still does it pretty well. Not an easy task.Love his point of view.
