A small town will be obliterated by a dam and a man-made lake. This is clearly what will occur in the story of the Miller family.

I love this, the mellow narration about Alice Young and the injustices of segregation. New Jessup is an all-black town where the injustices of white racism can be avoided.

Much better than I expected! Great insight into Russian culture as well as children’s TV. And the Muppets! Hooray!

They are setting this up for a sequel!

What a story! I did not guess what the title indicated, nor did I predict the mystery.

Dark story of the white Grimkes and their idealized abolition work vs. the black Grimkes’ actual efforts to ease suffering and demand equal treatment as human beings. Philadelphia riots of 1830’s…

Ada is like a daughter to Madam, but she is a black girl serving in a white household in South Africa. One guesses that her father is the master of the house. We’ll see.

Chapter 16 gives list of Australian literature! Humor writing is not generally my favorite, so this is a bit arduous for me. Still, the vocabulary is excellent!

After a good start but a slow slow section, the story of the Krafts regains interest. I’m glad I have persevered.

This is interesting, but it’s not great. The details about Maria Mitchell as a lesbian and heartbroken in love feel a bit forced. The steamy romance of Eliza and James is not what I want to know. The fire can’t get here soon enough.

A silly story for fun. It fills the G prompt in the 52 Challenge. Nice change from my usual stuff.

Creepy but interesting.

So horrific: the “sugar house” of enslaved people’s punishment and torture makes the charm of Charleston seem so superficial! It’s bad enough to know of individual abuses, but whole scale systems are more than I can comprehend.

I know most of the healthy foods mentioned here, but this has lots of reinforcement ! Blueberries and salmon aren’t just for the taste!

A slow start, but it’s already getting better. I like the use of language: “enslaved people” is a more powerful term than “slaves.” They are people first.
