Still enamored of Miss Alcott... plus copyright 1933! Reading challenge item to read a book published before I was born.

Listening to this fabulous audiobook that my sister gave me! I am surprised by the nuances of feeling experienced by the main character: so much more than a love story!

I love the early science of alchemy and the mystery of London in the 1660's. Apprentice character is a bright boy!

I like it even more than I remembered liking it! High praise. Time and age have enhanced the lessons as well as the characters.

Wonderful, especially in view of the reality of the Alcotts' poverty. Love the stories and lessons about goodness and kindness.

So precious... the simple desires to be good and useful, generous girls - even in their own poverty - is inspiring. We make life so complicated and selfish too often.

Lots of complicated science and research protocols. The story of teens who died from CJD in Great Britain and the failure of the govt. to warn of the dangers... wow...

If you are eating meat ... and you don't know what the animal has eaten during its lifetime, you are at risk. TSE (transmissible spongiform encephalopathy) killed my mother in the form of CJD. May 22, 2001.

Omigosh, this is a treasure! I am so glad I endured the slow start. Now I am eager to go back to Little Women and other Alcott fiction w/ more insight into this brilliant and ahead-of-her-time woman.

A bit slow going. I am not ready to quit, but I am ready for things to liven up a bit. The Alcott family lived a hard life, though surrounded by brilliant men like Emerson and Thoreau. Mr. Alcott believed in study and thought instead of work that earned money... so his family suffered. Boo on him and his principles!

Vivid. Brings back ugly memories, but good to be informed.

I love to memorize small bits poetry, like this one from the book:
"Had I youth's blood and hopeful mood and heart of fire once more,
For all the gold the world might hold,
I'd never quit your shore!"

Wonderful. Tragic and gut-wrenching. What would you do? What is right?

The book is tiresome, drags, and has few enjoyable passages. I love sweet Elizabeth, the seamstress, and have more reason than ever to dislike Mary Todd Lincoln. Determined to finish this!

Not an easy or entertaining read, but I like the main character enough to keep at it. Unsure if I will see it through to the end... too much of the volatile Mary Todd Lincoln; not enough of Elizabeth Keckley.

I did learn a new word: mantua.
