Chris (horizon_brave) is starting Thrawn (Star Wars: Thrawn, #1)
The Empire will not get anywhere...too much bickering and rivalry allowed from the upper officers. The political scene between senators and govenors is the same.. Too much inner plotting and in house fighting to get things done in the Empire...Wait...does this sound eerily familiar to OUR own political system...?

Fantastic...half of this is going to sound like it was narrated by the Sweet Valley High twins...

So I have to admit I never really liked the character of Thrawn. He played far far too easily to the cliche stereotyped "I'm so clever, I always am 3 steps ahead..." While this leads to some interesting writing and situations, it gets tiresome and often cringe worthy. I applaud the attempt to introduce some more 'down to earth characters'...but their stories don't seem to hold my interests sadly...

Well...interesting, but it reads very much like a history text book, or encyclopedia of the relationship between pre interstellar Earth and another race. It's very good and captivating, but it's more history book than actual novel...

lol, I have to go back and re-read the first...the story line here was pretty..deep and a bit confusing. While I appreciate the fantastic level of detail and thought in the story...sometimes there is a thing as TOO much. You can easily fall in the trap of over writing something...

I really like how Bill laid this book out. Each set of chapters is about a different topic and could be viewed as, as a sort of list of mantra's to live by. You could think of them all have some morale at the end...I wasn't expecting this level of quality...no offense Bill!!!

lol...The puns... Bill actually not only justifies but touts the usage of puns! I love this guy! And +1 for him being honest about the validity of some of his earlier shows on screen experiments!

Wow I really like the idea of this..Bill's voice is a bit...cringy at times but it's done in such cheesy over the top humor, it's forgiven. The chapter on US gov't is really an interesting perspective..

Heh...this book while interesting, and I think I'll enjoy the ride, strikes exactly at the heart of why I'm not a huge trekkie...too many damn alternate universes, time travel and parallel dimension stories..

Far far too many characters in the books, all turn into this philosophically inclined, masters of hiding emotion and only thinking on the existentialist side of things.

My complaint so far is the very flat characters. James S.A Corey has the odd habit of making all of his character far too contemplative, inwardly conscious, and brooding. Cara is a very young girl, yet the writing turns her into a very serious, emotionally stone like character.

Hmm as the story unfolds... I can see where this could have been a home run...knocked out of the park. But Iain Pears went way too far, trying to be too indepth here...far far too many characters, and not in a good helpful way.

Love the odd dynamic of the "wizened professor" befriending the " ignored downtrodden" young girl! Of course completely non-sexual and innocent. If this relationship was discovered today, he'd be stoned to death or run out of town. Reminds me of the story line in The Gentlemen in Moscow

No. Just no. This is on par with reading Twilight or some teen bubble gum poppy book. Not even close to what I was expecting...

Hard for me to take this seriously... Trying way to hard to be like Jon Strange and Mr. Norrell, and not really succeeding.. So the main character is introduced to the idea of magic existing...and accepts it as though accepting the fact that the sky is blue... And the scientific exposition is thick enough to cut through with a chainsaw...

Hmm judging how I'm looking forward to getting some reading time in tonight, I'd say that I may have been a bit knee jerky in my initial response to this book. Not only is it getting more entertaining, the characters are starting to come into their own with more "flesh" and substance.

Hmm, the whole idea of the Idolians, making a deal for magic for blood of humans is really neat, but reminds me strongly of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. In fact this whole story is starting to remind me of a WWII era J. Strange and M. Norrell...of course much less in terms of quality... and far fewer characters (may be a good thing actually)

I think this would make for a better comic book or something, other an actual novels. As hard as it tries, it comes across as a bit to 'showy' and playing into the overblown stereotypes and names. Very very stylized writing. Not a bad thing...for a summer read..

ehh...the writing here seems to be written for people obsessed with the Germanic language.. The voice acting... way to exaggerated. Takes me out of the "realism" I know that sounds weird considering the book has to do with warlock nazi conspiracies...

Oh wow, I didn't know it would be *this* alternate.... Again the stereotypes are a bit grating... The Englishmen sound like something out of a Charles Dickens novel... but it does have a charming fanciful air to it..

:\ interesting idea...but the names...writing and narration (audio book) all seem a bit cliche... The characters here seem like exaggeratedly caricatures of real WWII figures...
