OMG. Are they actually having a picnic on the hill overlooking Waterloo? Shit - Charles even points out the farm (which I saw being renovated and used as an English Heritage Site Inn - or something, people can stay there like a hotel). Fuck, that's one bloody & deadly battle and if Charles is forced into accepting command then I'm worried for what's to come because I KNOW the fate of some of those Cavalrymen.

Also loving their mutual goal in pursuing medical careers - especially Tristan's as it's a time when an interest in surgery was not acceptable to his class-level. (Even though being a physician WAS; odd turn of events and flipflopping of stature for those endeavors now.)

...makes it much easier as well to understand how she could so easily accept her husband and brother having a torrid affair. What I really appreciate is the way that she's painted as not emotional AT ALL and - knowing that Tristan needs love, needs that attachment - practically beseeches her brother to be that for him to avoid his complete break & another suicide attempt.

I don't think I'd have liked this book half as much as I do had Rowan not taken the time to actual paint a descriptive picture of Lottie as is done. That she knew of Charles' orientation is one thing but that she thought Tristan's whore-mongering was of no importance to her (in some way enjoying to hear of his exploits via the letters from friends) was important since I'm particular about cheating...

I've never read a period book with such a detailed description of someone so clinically depressed. And I do so appreciate the nod to Lottie and Charlie's interest in the emotional & mental sources of behavior/feelings being of German roots (hello Freud).

Okay, wow. I know they're not related/entwined but man, that was weird to read about a Captain Randall serving in the British Military with Charles in this book set during the Regency period. Why? Because my favorite ever MMF series (Brothers in Arms - Samantha Kane) features a Captain Randall, serving in the British Military, during the Regency period. I do so love coincidences.

LMAO! If this wasn't already an MM title, I could ALMOST find myself willing to continue on if for no other reason than Charlotte's pragmatism and her insistence that Tristan really need not bother trying to make it pleasant and "Thank goodness that's over with" only to roll over an fall asleep. AMAZING.

Holy shit, this is one crazy small world these guys live in to have so many friends in common (especially considering they live in Houston & NY - two RIDICulously big cities)!! Whole lotta characters, too; I'm guessing they're all introduced in this one but figure into the others in the By Degrees series...otherwise, it's way overboard and the confusion could avoided with some character conflation.

Another Note to Authors: I don't know where you guys have been staying, but I have never once, in 30+ years of traveling, EVER had a HOTEL shower turn cold. ONCE in a very small motel early in the A.M. it started off lukewarm & stayed that way...but that's it. So, please either tell me where this happens (so I'll never book a night there) or stop using it as a way to drive your sex out of the bathroom. Kthnxbai!

Huh...I think I'd rather hear about the serial killer case that Miro was part of previously. That sounds like it could be an interesting book...

LMAO! Absolutely inconceivable coincidence: I quoted Prince Humperdink in my last update...then 40 pages later OMFG Brian says how much he likes The Princess Bride and Nick does Inigo's speech and mentioned how he used to look under his bed for Rodents of Unusual Size. I fuckin' LOVE that movie!

Wow there is a whole hella lot of backstory building, plot establishment & character development here...more to come I suppose, too. Considering the length of the book I should have expected that, but I can say this time it's not so irritating. Really feels integral to the story unlike others that lose me by this point & have me wanting to (as Prince Humperdink would say), "Skip to the end."

I've read a few that were similar to Mitchell's, and the MCs were able to stave off the marriage completely - which I honestly preferred BUT...this is the best off all worlds and much more likely to be successful so that everyone can be with the person they love without drawing much attention & gossip during a time rife with it.

Holy shit! I put it down for a day and then heard the voice it reminded me of while my kid was watching TV - yummy Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson from the Marvel movies/shows)! I knew I'd figure it out...

Pleasantly surprised by how much I like the KA Mitchell story...which, considering how much I love her work should NOT be a surprise.

Omg, how can a book take me from near tears one minute to horrified the next...only to spew my soda just a page later? Tim's reading the grandkids "a hippie book about how the story of Thanksgiving was a big old lie andthat white people were a plague that destroyed the cultures of Native Americans." It's funny...'cause it's true. And I needed that juxtaposition and laugh at this point in the book.
