Of course Nichol WOULD try to make sure Cam can stay w/ Harry in some way, taking the blame for seducing him, saying he started the relationship as a warped form of demanding payment & appreciation. Not that I think Harry would buy it...or that Cam really would stay without Nichol (despite what I said earlier). No, Harry better suck it up; he'd have lost everything w/o their help, their personal investment.

Awww...shit. If he kicks them out it's gonna gut Cam. He's really fond of Harry & desperately wants his respect; I think Harry knows that, sees what effort the 'young lad' puts into pulling his weight, earning his keep and doing the right thing. A part of me thinks he'd rather have that than Nichol's love in some ways.

Wow. Ok, that was a wicked-hot sex scene (especially given the accent=EARPORN). But, IDK. Something about the whole scenario was incongruous with the rest of the book & even the quickNdirty BJ earlier in the story...Omyfuck, was I expecting it to be like a purple-prosaic cheesy-HQ-romance novel?!? (Not the Bodice Rippers; those are usually smuttygood.) *groans* God, I think I DID expect that! WHY? I hate those! Argh!

How much do I <3 that Lisa Henry writes hellahot, damn good Teen Wolf stories & Jane Davitt pens some smuttygood, insightful multi-fandom tales, too?! Yeah, 2 authors who SHOULD BE getting recognition for their fanfic as well as more praise for their published work. Not the fanfic-cum-'original' crapfestorrific & dangerously UNkinky fuckNOTery of '#huesofsuckage.' Yes, I'm bitter & judgy. Deal. @sorrynotsorry

Seriously, the imagery for this novel is so ridiculously beautiful, it brings me to tears. I feel like I AM there, like I can SEE the landscape when I'm listening to this tale & I close my eyes; fuck, I'm stuck in the middle of the gorram desert but every now & then I swear I can smell the ocean. Since I so often feel quite lonely, the isolation of the farm is achingly palpable & it's hard to catch my breath. *cries*

Usually the texts/oral histories finally recorded I've found reference a third gender: Fa’afafine, Kathoeys, Hijra, Sistergirls, Two-Spirited; even the more modern Femminielli. Not quite what I'm looking for, though.

Gonna need to really look hard for it in Norse/Gaelic/Celtic/Germanic tradition. (Hopefully there's a reference to a goat farm being tended by a former Gladiator & his ex-slave soulmate!)

...of course there's also a tradition of it elsewhere, but if you're not aware of it you have to search it out. It's there in Indian, Aboriginal, Native American & even Japanese/Chinese/Mongolian art & books & rituals...I've been lucky to see some of the art and taken the time to step outside of my own ethnocentrism to appreciate how it's not necessarily depicted as either bad or good. Just...that it is.

I should look that up: the history of homosexual relations or references of gay sex in Gaelic/Celtic literature & art. The museums & libraries are dotted w/a few depictions & descriptions of it in ancient Roman/Greek times (unfortunately as viewed/interpreted through western moral/ethical/religious judgmental lenses); not celebrated or spotlighted, but it's there in plain sight...

Late comment, but I find it interesting that Nichol was studying linguistics, specifically "why languages develop, how they fit together" when Gaelic, the tongue Harry falls back on so often, doesn't have an exact word for 'homosexual.' I like to imagine it was an unnecessary term; that it didn't require a derogatory name; that such relationships weren't any different, any LESS. (*firmly seats rose colored glasses*)

HA! See, even Cam thinks there may be ghosts! Sounds scaring him, a city boy, reminiscent of a banshee, a wraith? LOL, of course, it's actually only a bird; a loon, it's lonely wail a desperate call for its mate. Symbolism again? Yes, I think so as that fear was enough to get them together in bed, bonding & touching a little; then Nichol, left alone, yearning for Cam, his orgasmic groan calling out for HIS mate, too.

...maybe even that she's bound up in the spirit of The Morrigan (as symbolized by ravens returning in spring). I do so love Gaelic & Celtic mythology. Well, everything Scottish/Irish actually - I even named my kid words that mean 'Child of the Valley' (he WAS born in the LV valley) & 'Little Fiery One' (came out at 4:20 screaming his head off). I need to draw up a will to make sure my ashes are spread there.

The almost mystic, eerily enchanted aspects of this story give me the shivers: the return of the farm cat (a Scottish sign of prosperity), the ghostly reminders of Nichol's mother ("magically" re-folded & specifically placed clothing; Cam's singing that sounded like her; those symbols of sun, flowers, hair, pagan ceremonies) hinting that her spirit is there...

Okay, so not hearing of their dance together (not even after Laurie danced alone) doesn't upset me anymore. It's special. Private. Theirs. It's love manifested. (I'm still crying.) Of course, if there's ever a short story or interlude published at some point in the future where they dance, alone - I'm all over that shit. Because HC can't NOT write beautifully a scene like that. (Even tho it will end in porn.) :-P

I'm trying not to feel disappointment about them not dancing at the benefit - but it's there too for the fictional audience & those kids who need to see an example of a same sex couple publicly in love. But it's also sadness for Ed; it meant so much to him, and the return of pain must be devastating. I think Laurie needed that acceptance and validation, too. But I trust HC; there's a reason for it...

LMAO!!! OF COURSE Laurie's dad is a huge fan of Ed's and football. I should have expected that given the awkward father/son relationship. He just didn't know how to relate to his son...

Holy hell, that fear of everything falling apart when faced with a job loss was positively visceral. Brought up my own feelings fast: You don't always think about your personal support system or what other help there is available to get you through; how much it hurt trying to fight when the panic spirals so deep you're absolutely paralyzed, at a loss of how to even get out of bed let alone eat, bathe, interact...

OMFG, after writing all that about how hot and romantic the sex was to hear, I'm now listening to the all too real consequences that typically follow anal sex...narrated so accurately that I got ridiculously uncomfortable thinking about it...only to have the characters engage in such touching clean up the whole interaction practically felt like whiplash.

Jeezus Crust, Heidi writes some smoking hawt fucking sex scenes...scenes that also have that edge of romance and true love that make it more than just PWP. Listening to Iggy read them makes it really, really hard to enjoy them anywhere in public - and I didn't think I could get embarrassed anymore (after all, I used to be quite a bit of an exhibitionist). It's disconcerting to say the least.

Ha! I just read a story in the MM Military anthology that used sex magic for healing; and in this, Oliver mentioned to Laurie that good sex can be a healing force. Wonder if that's the Universe talking to me or some sort of sign...
