I think, once I'm done with this, I'm going to take a break from books with only internal angst/character driven plots. Having a hard time (again) slogging through the drama w/o some sort of external force to power it. I'm just not all that invested in how the MCs work their shit out.

(Thankfully there's a war, a potential insurrection & a financial scandal as the backdrop of the 3 other books I've got on-going!)

Can I just say how refreshingly imperfect these MCs are? Lane is a bit TSTL, but a product of his upbringing...and Derek with his admitted jealousy and judgmental outlook?

(Although, I'm not giving Brin a pass on his attitude, yet; I don't care that he's supposed to be a "brat" who needs to be taken in hand because despite comments to the contrary that is NOT an attractive trait.)

Me: (Trying on new-to-me bifocals) "Oh hey, I can change to a smaller font on my Kindle now!"
Optometrist: "Well, that's good. But be careful going up & down stairs."
Me: "No problem. I don't have any stairs at home."

Me: *Promptly trips & falls stepping down off the sidewalk to the parking lot after leaving the eye doctor's office. (Bonus: the entire store-front is glass & two employees came out to check on me.)

Oh hey, I wondered when that whole neutering thing would come up...

OMG, how do you pick when all of them want the job so much? When it would mean that much to so many of them? When any one of them would be perfect for so many different reasons?

Gah! This is why I was a shitty hiring manager! (And why I was so happy there was a matrix to help pick the best qualified for/suited to the position.)
