" This is a book I go back to on my worst of days. I've read it so many times by now, I can open it up to a random page and just read as if I never stopped. This was my first foray away from children's and young adult fiction and into the wonderful wor This is a book I go back to on my worst of days. I've read it so many times by now, I can open it up to a random page and just read as if I never stopped. This was my first foray away from children's and young adult fiction and into the wonderful world of adult and classic fiction. It's one of the reasons why I fell in love with literature and wanted to pursue English in university. Emily Bronte is easily my kindred spirit from centuries past. She writes all these despicable characters, but does it so beautifully, you can't help but feel at least something for them. If it's not love, it's pity, or at the very least, loathing, and quite frankly, if an author makes you feel such an extreme emotion for a character, you know they've done their job. Emily writes extremes of the stereotypes of her day. Lockwood, Nellie and Joseph are all characters we're meant to laugh at, while Cathy, Heathcliff and Hindley are meant to be hated and Cathy II and Hareton, pitied. As a book that has become one of my many literary firsts, I always feel the strongest urge to defend the characters, as if they were my closest friends. Heathcliff is not inherently evil, he was just never given the opportunity to foster any gentle nature he may have possessed. And Cathy, although seemingly whiny on the surface, actually uses her whinginess to get whatever the hell she wants. She has both Heathcliff and Linton falling at her feet at the drop of a hat just because she's put the waterworks on. She's got that power within her, she just doesn't have the means to use it the way she wants.

And it's not just the characters that I love about this story. It's the setting too. The moors of Yorkshire are my idealized view of England. I feel so very attached to the image of the green, rolling hills, the stone walls and torrential rain... and Emily Bronte, and Cathy and Heathcliff in extension, are very much at one with that part of England. As bizarre as it sounds, when I close my eyes and imagine myself elsewhere, I'm in that bedroom in Wuthering Heights, watching the rain outside my window and listening to the wind, whispering "Let me in. Let me in" and I know I'm home. ...more "
