This is the last book in the series I’ll read

After reading the first book in the series I recognised that it was the author’s first novel, so I was willing to give her a second shot. I was hoping she would improve more than she did. I think the main problem with her style is that when writing a novel of this type the narrative needs to be concise. This, however, was elongated. If this material was in the hands of a more skilled writer it would have been much better, and considerably shorter with a tighter feel to it. Indeed, this novel waffles on and is unnecessarily packed out. I sincerely regret giving her a second chance because this book is awful, and so is the first one.

Moreover, the characters are flat and predictable. The romance route that is continued in this novel is just plain weak and quite appalling. It made me view the protagonist of this novel as quite docile and generally speaking just a doormat. Where is her fight? She lets herself become controlled again, and is blind to the manipulation of her Mimelord. One scene in particular emphasised the deplorability of her character; she request a meeting with head of crime in the city and when she meets them she literally stands there whilst they beat the crap out of her. Fair enough, she is overwhelmed and can’t fight back, but she doesn’t even mention the reason she requested the meeting in the first place. She just stands there, so it was a very frustrating momment.

Ridiculous slang

There is far too much jargon in here that it borders on the absurd. Many words feel out of place in their context and at times just come across as plain stupid. There is even a glossary in the back of the book to assist the reader. Who when reading a book wants to look up the meaning of words such as Rottie, Glossolalia and Boundling? It’s just plain nonsense. Every few pages there is a reference like this, and not all of them are even explained it the glossary. I think a little bit of slang is ok, if used moderately. But, when too much is used it leaves you with a feeling of alienation with the novel. I mean, you’d never read words like this again unless you picked up the next instalment in this terrible series.

Suffice to say, I hated this book. I can’t actually get over the fact that there is going to be seven books in this series. Who wants to read seven books of flat characters, ridiculous slang and plain poor plotting? Not me, that’s for sure.

Ahh that plot twist!

This is slowly becoming a favorite series of mine. Took awhile longer than the first book to become fully immersed but once I hit that stride there was no stopping! The world building is insane and leaves much to still be explored. Paige is an awesome heroine and I can't wait to see her kick some more ass. I wouldn't mind seeing more of Warden, though, and a bit more romance ;) All in all a really solid sequel.

The ending was really cool and I'm so excited for the next book!

However, this book definitely suffered from second book syndrome for me. I was honestly starting to skim some sections due to boredom and then I ended up completely confused as to what was going on. I'm definitely way more confused than I was in book 1 and I found this book honestly not as good as I expected.

  Spoiler warning for the whole “The Bone Season” series!!

In “The Bone Season” the book ends with Paige and the other survivors going back to London on a train after escaping Sheol I. This book starts where the previous book left of and I really liked that there wasn’t a time lapse between the first and the second book. It was fun to read about the escape and I liked seeing Paige save them in another dangerous situation. The tension is really high. “Are they going to make it? Where would the train stop?” But I do think that the events are a bit dull. It was a bit too easy just stepping on a train and riding to London. Why isn’t this train stopped by the Raphaim? There must be some sort of control system? Also the break into The Tower and escape from it had me like “No way, that’s way too easy!” Thought it was supposed to be the most feared and most guarded prison or something. And they just walked in?! But If you compare the exciting beginning from The Mime Order to the info dumbing beginning of The Bone Season you can see the improvement. It was action packed, exciting, clear and well written, although I still see some improvement points.

After the escape from the train and then The Tower the whole story, unfortunately, collapses. Paige is the most wanted criminal in Scion and she needs to stay in hiding for a while. So she stays in motels and waits until Nick brings her food and goes over the happened events and what to do now. These pages where realistic but not necessary to be in this book. I hated reading Paige depressing thoughts and her going over previous scenes I already read. Then Paige makes up her mind and goes back to the Seven Dials, because it is her best shot for survival and she has run out of money. I didn’t like this. Jaxon treats every single person as dirt and Paige deserved something better after what she had been through. Also, didn’t there just a war happen? Aren’t there Raphaims making plans for a new Bone Season? Isn’t London still in danger? Paige just continues with her normal life in The Seven Seals and though that was interesting I found it a strange turn of events. And after the epic action filled first book it felt boring. I find it a strange order that in the first book we get thrown into a story about a girl we know nothing about and got to meet this crazy world (Sheol I) and we go through this strange rollercoaster action filled plot. And then in book two we got to ‘meet’ the main character and her world. Because of this the action and plot completely stopped, the tension slipped away and with that my attention.

Ok in book one we figure out one of the two complicated systems/worlds, Sheol I. But with Paige being back in London I was doomed to learn the other one to. This one is even more complicated, with all the districts and gangs and mime-lords and mollers. I was annoyed after reading a first book in a series that I still needed to learn things about the world. I would have liked to have figured it out in book one and just relax and keep on reading without scrolling back and forth to the glossary, The Seven Orders of Clairvoyants and The Assembly of Unnatural. But once again after I got used to it, I loved the world building. It was super cleaver how Shannon came up with this structured but corrupt dark underworld of London. I LOVED to read about it, and to figure this crazy world out step by step!

The writing style is also improved. I still like the way that it feels like Paige talked to me, like she is telling ME a story. Shannon writes really vivid and fluently, what makes it easy and fun to read.

What I was a little scared about, because of the kiss in the first book, was that this would turn into some twisted spin of off Romeo and Juliette. And I kind of think that did happen. Though they don’t really love each other they have this complicated ‘something more than friends’ hang above their heads and I hated that. I would have liked them to stay master and apprentice and then grow closer and become equals. I was annoyed by all the feelings but also the feelings Paige didn’t have. I would be heartbroken if I would love Warden but I can’t be with him because I’m human. But Paige is like well that’s how life goes… I just didn’t like their talks and interactions as much as the first book. This love thing just doesn’t work in this story for me.

Other than that tiny detail I LOVED PAIGE. She is such a badass. I love EVERY decision she makes, every ally she takes and every friendship she makes. I love the growth she makes from Jaxons moller to this badass black moth queen.
I also loved the Seven Seals and to read about them, NOT IN A FLASHBACK! I liked that every Seal has his/her own personality, and that they made that work for years surprised me. Eliza is so cute and innocent, I love her. Same for Nick he is the rock Paige needs to lean on once in a while. I really liked to read how this trust builds and the friendship that grows stronger. Danice doesn’t appear as much in this book as I would have liked her to, but she is like this crazy scientist you just have to love (I loved that she choose Paige over Jaxon in the end that was unexpected for me). I really liked Zeke’s relationship with Nick although we don’t read much about it. I don’t know what to think of Zeke though… Nadine is this irritating annoying character, she follows Jaxon around and does everything he asks. She’s hypocritical and doesn’t have a backbone. And Jaxon… I still kind of love him, I understand his motives and his character. I’m so curious what he will do in the next book. (Paige should have killed him).

Maybe going into the previous book blind wasn’t a bad thing, all the twists and turns came unexpected and that held the excitement high. But in this book I knew Paige was going to gather forces to go after the Sargas and that that would be a challenge. So I think nothing new happened and nothing that surprising. I missed the twists and turns from the previous book. The twist who Ivy really was, was cool and unexpected but there were not that many other great twists. The one with Jaxon and the other mime lords and queens I saw coming, furthermore there weren’t any. The plot was really slow, but not dying. There were some action filled scenes but they also didn’t live up to those in the previous book. And in between these scenes Paige just kind of lives her life while trying to find out who killed Hector and what the heck is going on. I found that boring. Also some events where just kind of random and strange… Things just happen out of nowhere and then I don’t even remember how or why because it is so bizarre. Like when this random guy appeared when Paige, Zeke, Elisa and Nick where talking in this forest, and they just let him open this portal so they all get almost killed by an Emim. Another random thing was Paige crawling to this tunnel and then just happen to come across these people that she can eavesdrop on and just happens to hear these big secrets. The events where enjoyable but why they happened was kind of strange. It needed a bigger and more excited preamble and sometimes more explanation.

I feel like this whole book builds up to the mêlee, and wow that was action packed and vivid. The writing there is so beautiful it comes to life. Shannon can write action very well. I loved the battles between Paige and all the other contestants. I loved seeing Jaxon in action. I loved to see more from the other Mime lords and queens. I just loved this whole Mêlee!

The only things I have to comment on is that it goes rather quick and easy for Paige and Jaxon to become the only two left alive. If there is a complot to kill Paige first, then why don’t they go after her before. Another thing I didn’t get was; Paige can kill someone by going into their minds and kill them within a matter of seconds. So why go to all the trouble, the blood and almost get killed a few times when with a single push of her ghost she can kill them? Yeah she wants to give them a spectacle to look at, but surviving is priority number one right?!

The battle between Jaxon and Paige was AMAZING! I really enjoyed reading this. And I was really cheering her on! I loved how defeated Jaxon was at the end! I also really like it how the title comes back at the end of this book, because the whole book I was like what the heck is this Mime Order thing.

And that’s how you end a book! DAMN! (Stupid cliffhanger)

A book I was really REALLY excited about came out while I was reading this, so I put this book on hold for a few days. But I missed Paige and this world so much, while reading that other book! How can I survive a year waiting for the next book, The Song Rising! NEED IT NOW!!!

The Mime Order picks up where The Bone Season left off, with Paige Mahoney once again in London with Jaxon Hall and the Seven Seals. But while everything seems to be exactly as she’d left it, Paige herself is irrevocably changed. Not only is she aware of the Rephaim’s existence, but she is, for the first time, strong enough to stand for what she believes in, even if it means going against the man who gave her life as she knows it.

The majority of this book deals with the damage to Paige and Jaxon’s relationship. Jaxon, being his usual self-absorbed, power-hungry self, is unwilling to back Paige up in front of The Unnatural Assembly. Unlike her, he thinks that clairvoyants should remain blissfully unaware of the danger that successfully hides behind their government.

The pacing is once again extremely slow, but I find that I have the patience needed to fully enjoy it. The allure of Paige’s world is in its intricacy, and as Shannon took the time to slowly reveal the chilling details, I was able to take my time and fully enjoy them. I had my doubts about the return from Sheol I to London, but the transition was done beautifully and seamlessly so that I never felt the loss – if anything, Paige’s world was expanded and built upon skillfully and with infinite care, giving us so much to learn, and even more to look forward to.

Ah, but the slow dance between Paige and Warden is the highlight of this book. Their subtle moves towards each other are both terrifying and thrilling. There is so much mistrust to overcome, so much prejudice and fear, and yet the two are drawn to each other like magnets, until nothing matters but the pull between them. This is an agonizingly slow romance that will surely develop into something unforgettable in the five upcoming books. There is very little hope for them and they both know it, but we readers simply have to put our faith in Samantha Shannon and hope for the best.

At this point, Alana Kerr with her soft Irish lilt seems like the only choice for narrating these books. There aren’t many audiobook narrators who could make 16 hours seem like no time at all. I would never even consider a different format for these books. Why would I, when Kerr has become Paige in my head, and hearing this gorgeous story directly from her seems like the only way to go.

Paige Mahoney escaped her imprisonment in the Sheol prison camp, under cruel Rephaim leadership, only to return to her former cage, under the guise of protection, of her mime-lord Jaxon Hill. As with the first book, the complexity of this tale was just astounding. Shannon brilliantly imagined our futuristic world, with an intricate hierarchy of humanity that satired our history of the governing patriarchal wish for unity and its intense dislike for anything that threatened the human standardisation. The clairvoyant individuals of the tale are treated as lesser humans, and feared, shunned and loathed by the rest of society. Their death is treated as media gold and used for light entertainment.

The underground community that has sprung in the wake of this repression thrives on their own sense of order, further oppressing some of their own kin's abilities. Paige highlights this injustice and brings a call for change that equalises all individuals.

Her morality is what made Paige such a fascinating protagonist. She may be young, impetuous, and volatile but she is also fierce, noble, and brave.

And this nebulous individual was also mirrored in the setting. I adored the wonderfully evocative descriptions conjured of this futuristic London. Shadows of our contemporary city remained, so as to give a basis for this imaginary depiction, but it has also been evocatively re-imagined. Remnants of the old world battled in the shadows, against the startling and uniform architecture of the future.

If i had to describe this book in one word, it would be intense. Too. Intense. How, exactly, does one write a proper review after reading that last line?

What do I need to do to make everyone read this series? Sacrifices? Buy you all drinks on me? Howl at the moon? Because I’ll do it. In a heartbeat. This series is so good. IT’S SO GOOD, YOU GUYS. The Mime Order picks up right where The Bone Season left off and it’s even better than its predecessor. Samantha Shannon has come into her own as a writer and it tells, because the writing is absolutely fantastic. It courses effortlessly, it’s poetic, melodic and it made me not want to put this book down. With the reader being comfortable in this world, knowing all the nooks and crannies, Samantha can instead focus on the characters, on extending the plot and the world she has built. And oh gosh, do things get intense! I literally held my breath every page in the final quarter of the book. It’s fast paced, it’s action-packed and energetic.

The originality of the series, what makes it stand out, is there in every page: we get to understand more about clairvoyants and their powers. But at the same time, we’re introduced to a very cunning and powerful game of politics. This adds a second layer to the fantasy element and it’s fascinating to read about it. I love books that have political elements in them and that have you guessing throughout reading the story. Combine this with amazing characters and you have the recipe that drew me so much into this story.

I don’t want to get too much into the plot, because I want people who haven’t gotten into the series yet to be able to read this review and maybe consider picking these books up. Because I want to see more people blogging about them and talking about them. They have a compelling plot and a mixture of fantasy and dystopian elements that proves extraordinary. READ THEM. And then come cry and fangirl with me that there are 5 more books planned and we have none of them in our hands right now.

Well, I tried. It's a pity because I absolutely LOVED The Bone Season and this one can't hold my attention for more than 5 minutes (I've been reading this book for almost a month and I'm not even half-way through).

Hopefully I'll pick this up again in the future.

What an amazing sequel! the book took a bit to get into relearning the world, just like the first one did. Once I got going I couldn't stop! the books slowly builds till you get to the crazy last part! This series has become one of my new all time favourites and if you haven't picked up The Bone Season yet I highlight suggest you do!

I had heard the The Mime Order was even better than the first book and I was pretty hesitant to believe the hype. I don't often find sequels to be better than the first books and I thought The Bone Season was really great. However, the hype was totally accurate.
I love the action and pacing in The Mime Order. Especially the last 100 pages or so. It was so exciting and I couldn't put it down.

This book is an exciting journey. Paige managed to escape from Sheol I with other fugitives, making them the most-wanted people in London. Scion is looking for them and to keep herself covered, Paige has to return to work for her old mime lord Jaxon. I like how Paige tried to stand-up for herself and the truth around the danger of the Rephraite. She wasn't ready to bow to Jaxon and I found it admirable. Her life becomes even more complicated when the Underlord and his gang are murdered; the battle for the new Underlord is about to begin.

What I love about the plot is the complexity, but how is refrains from becoming too dense. The political intrigue behind the Underlord and the brutal fight at the ending were exactly what I needed. That scene made my heart pound and Samantha doesn't spare her characters, so I had some frightened moments there. The twist at the end made my mouth drop and I wish the next book was already there, because it's going to be hard to wait.

I liked how we got more details about voyants and what happened; how the Rephraite came into the world and gained power. I think I'm going to have to re-read The bone season, because like I said in the introduction, the world-building overwhelmed me in the beginning. I felt there was a better balance in The mime order and I want to go back to explore it again.

Paige was a very strong character. She is realistic and intelligent, although sometimes a bit rash in her decisions. I warmed up for her and felt more connected to her than in The bone season. I had the same with Warden and their scenes together were great. Their romance is on the background and that gives a perfect vibe in the story. There is a tension between them and you are ready for it to explode. The secondary characters are also fleshed out, like Jaxon and his obsession with becoming the new Underlord for power and money.

Well shit. This series still isn't my usual cup of tea but I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed these books. The Mime Order had half the amount of info-dumping as The Bone Season which I really appreciated. The cast of characters grew on me, as did Paige and the authors writing style. I still struggled with the language and the setting, but I was able to keep some sort of hold on the storyline which kept me invested!
