So. Much. Fun.

This super cute Cinderella-goes-to-Geeky-Con story is probably closer to a 3.5 in terms of merit because I think it could have been even better (view spoiler)

THE THOUSANDTH FLOOR is a sleek, smart, guilty pleasure. The opening chapter begins with an unnamed girl falling to her death from a skyscraper in 22nd century New York, and the questions of "who" and "why" are ever-present as this thriller unfolds. ...more

3.5 stars Surprisingly interesting, especially towards the end. An entertaining airport-type read, with an intriguing subplot that doesn't surface until you realize what's going on.

Review to come of the audio edition. I'll have to look up the voice

The good news: THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN was not a fluke.

The not-so-great news: this book's plot and characters are less compelling, and its flaws much more obvious.

Review to come of the audio edition.

The first 75% of the book was terrific--lots of twists and turns, well-paced, interesting character development and relationships, I was eager to return to my audiobook every time I was away from it. I also loved that contrary to most thrill

DNF after 5 chapters. Loved the beginning, which has the heroine literally up to her elbows with a cadaver in an autopsy room. But the deliberate visceral appeal of those types of scenes, reminiscent of THE MADMAN'S DAUGHTER, are hampered by thin rom ...more

Beverly Cleary
“If she can't spell, why is she a librarian? Librarians should know how to spell.”
Ramona Quimby as written by Beverly Cleary, Ramona's World

Madeleine L'Engle
“You have to write the book that wants to be written. And if the book will be too difficult for grown-ups, then you write it for children.”
Madeleine L'Engle

Diane Setterfield
“People disappear when they die. Their voice, their laughter, the warmth of their breath. Their flesh. Eventually their bones. All living memory of them ceases. This is both dreadful and natural. Yet for some there is an exception to this annihilation. For in the books they write they continue to exist. We can rediscover them. Their humor, their tone of voice, their moods. Through the written word they can anger you or make you happy. They can comfort you. They can perplex you. They can alter you. All this, even though they are dead. Like flies in amber, like corpses frozen in the ice, that which according to the laws of nature should pass away is, by the miracle of ink on paper, preserved. It is a kind of magic.”
Diane Setterfield, The Thirteenth Tale

A.A. Milne
“Piglet sidled up to Pooh from behind.
"Pooh!" he whispered.
"Yes, Piglet?"
"Nothing," said Piglet, taking Pooh's paw. "I just wanted to be sure of you.”
A.A. Milne, The House at Pooh Corner

Ray Bradbury
“Stuff your eyes with wonder, he said, live as if you'd drop dead in ten seconds. See the world. It's more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories.”
Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451
