My 9-10 boys & girls have very diverse tastes. You have some kids that fluctuate between anything that is a superhero--with no true loyalties to publishers---Only anything that is a superherooo~
I have other kids who stick with the GN like Benny & Penny, BabyMouse, Bone, Amulet, Broxo, Ariol, The Warrior series (Erin Hunter) and Big Nate. Independents are a MUCH easier sell to Juveniles than Teens. The big manga floating out there is Pokemon....
My Teens (11-17) are usually divided into two groups: Manga | DC/Marvel Comics. Any graphic novel outside of those two big groups is usually ALWAYS a hard sell. My high schoolers thrive on manga and that is our highest circulation. I usually get either new parents looking for their specific DC/Marvel series, or adults who are surprised something we own is classified as “Teens.” Usually, Independents I have easier times with college kids and adults gravitating to the graphic novels outside of that (slice of life, classics, etc...) As far as educational GN goes, the classics that are revamped into GN never do well. Biographies don't really do well either. On the other hand, any popular novel turned into manga/GN (Percy Jackson, City of Bones, Hollow City Series, Twilight)always does well.
Adults (18+) are an amoeba of everything different diverse world that GN offers. I can tell you that Sandman is our highest & frequently stolen comic. Fables is our most requested. I work on a separate floor than the adult graphic novel collection, and it is always funny to me when patrons are surprised there are a lot of crossover comics between Teen & Adult. I also get a lot of complaints from mom’s about the oversexulaized images of women superheroes. I actually had one patron, who told me she will turn comics around on the display if they are inappropriately dressed. Lululululz.
Actually, in Bat family, Nightwing has always been my favorite outside of Batman. Now, I really really really really, like the reboot of Batgirl. Especially teh art, I think outside of the complaints of Barbara overcoming her disability, and them just dropping the former Batgirl Simone has done a fantastic job recreating Batgirl. I usually have a much easier time getting my teens to read the other Bat family reboots with the success of the Court of Owls. I luuuuuurrrve me some Bendis---from the time of Hellspawn. AHAHAHAHA. :)

@ Jessica - Good to have a librarian on board our group. Would you happen to know what types of graphic novels are popular to borrow amongst your library ..."

Even in India (where the graphic novel market is really minuscule) most of the people (read youngsters 12-20 age group) gravitate towards superheros. The interest in superhero books is mainly due to the big budget Hollywood blockbusters that keep croping up regularly. However getting hands on anything outside the genre is difficult. I really like the Walking Dead and Locke and Key series.
After reading your post it reminded me that I have still to catch up on Sandman pending since 3-4 years.

I read mostly Marvel and a DC comic here or there back then. During the 80's I got into more DC and some of the indies. I've always had a soft spot for Eclipse comics. I quit collecting cold turkey in the mid 90's and slowly got back into collecting in the early 2000,s More recently I hated Marvel for a short time, got into DCs new 52, dropped out after all the crossovers started. Got back into Marvel with Marvel Now, but before that I found myself knee deep in a bunch of Image titles.
My favorite titles right now are Saga, Lazarus, Velvet, Walking Dead and Great Pacific from Image. For mainstream I'm liking Black Widow, Ms. Marvel, Superior/Amazing Spider-Man, All New X-Men and Wonder Woman. I HATE multi-title crossovers and mini-series events. Most of the time I avoid them like the plague.

Andrew, we'd love to keep chatting with you about books and discover new things to read together. :)
Killian, good luck for your exams. Do well and come back quick, so that we can talk more about TV shows and comics. :)

I joined because I love graphic novels and love discussing them. My favorite graphic novels at this moment are: V for Vendetta, Arkham Asylum, the Sandman series and Batman: Year One.
I haven't read all that much, but I'm starting and I can't wait!

I haven't read a lot of graphic novels, but I am a big fan of V for Vendetta and Jason Lutes's Berlin. I am fascinated by the Weimar Republic

Graphic novels have opened my eyes to a whole new world, it's great!! I hope with this group I get to know more novels. I really like the Flight volumes.

I had to put my recreational reading on hold when college and jobs got in the way, but after browsing through the graphic novel collections at the library, I'm eager to start reading again.

I am running a count down deal on Amazon this weekend for my book "Footprints".

I am joining this group to water my re-found love for graphic novels :)
Since humble bundle gave me a affordable way to get a beginners stock of novels I am going totally all-out with the graphic novels :D

My name is Everard and I've been involved in the field of Graphic Design for about 15 years or so. I'm currently the Creative Director at http://ww.gemgfx.com/.
I've always loved Comics and Graphic Novels, ever since I was a child being scolded for drawing in my school books. As I got older I started collecting titles such as Strikeforce Morituri and Justice.
Recently my wife and I decided to create one. http://celflux.com/. I'm looking forward to interesting interactions and idea exchanges that can happen here.
Regards,
Everard

Start off with more of Burns's work. I really like Big Baby. The third part of his recent trilogy is coming out soon (I think), it starts with X'ed Out and The Hive.
I'm sure I, and the group, could recommend a whole bunch more stuff. What did you like about Black Hole?

I liked that the art is really grotesque, the dialogs and the way he starts building his characters, I also liked his confidence in nudity and drugs use in this amazing and original story (I think its original, cause I have never read something like this before).
So if you have something pre-Charles Burns that is similar in this characteristics I would love to check it out.
Thanks!

Yoshihiro Tatsumi, a Japanese writer who was doing some really interesting short story comics. Most of the collections available from him are stories he drew in the 70s. He focuses, like Burns in Black Hole, on the lives of select people going through crazy scenarios.

My name is Steve Chaput and I am a Librarian. I've worked in public & academic libraries since I got out of the U.S. Navy in 1986. I attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY while working at the Brooklyn Public Library. I am currently working at the Orange Public Library & History Center in Orange, CA.
I was reading comic strips before reading comic books, so it was an easy transition when my mother bought me my first comics when at the age of seven I had to go into the hospital to have my tonsils removed. I'd like to think that she never regretted it. Both my parents were readers, so there was never a lot of trouble with my reading and collecting 'funny books', until I went into the Navy in '69.
I have read comics (and graphic novels, if we need to get fancy) on and off since those early days. I continue to enjoy them, although I now read fewer and some of those in the digital format. I'm looking forward to the discussions here on our shared love.

I love books with strong but flawed female characters like Bendis' Alias, Rucka's Stumptown, Simone's Birds of Prey, and DeConnick's Captain Marvel. My monthly favorite is Saga and my latest obsession is Astro City.
I'm always looking for recs of great books so hit me up if you got 'em. I'm also looking for more friends to follow on GRs, so if you're interested, let me know :)

If you like KSD, you should check out Pretty Deadly Vol. 1. It's amazing. She's also got a new series coming out in the fall, Bitch Planet. Women in prison - in space!

Thanks for the recs! Pretty Deadly is on my "To Read" and I will definitely have to check out Bitch Planet. Thanks

For many years now I have confined myself mostly to my annual shopping spree at SDCC but about two years ago I started buying digital at Comixology. I don't superhero books anymore except for books like The Boys, Volume 1: The Name of the Game. I am glad to find a group where I can get in some buddy reads of comics, I pretty much buy TPBs/collected volumes anymore vice single issue since I buy to read instead of collect for the most part now.

My name is Brittany and I have loved comics and graphic novels since I was a kid. I started with Archie comics, which I still love to this day (Loving Afterlife with Archie!), but have since greatly expanded my selection. Some of my favourites include Locke and Key, Adventure Time series (pretty much all of them are great), Saga, and the Avatar Series.
I joined this group so I can find more great graphic novels to read and hear people's thoughts about them.

My name is Matthew and I've grown up with comics my whole life, mostly Super Hero based until about 4 years ago when Jeff Smith's Bone opened my eyes to using the medium to tell all kinds of stories. I joined to find other graphic novels to read and to discuss my love of the medium with others who enjoy it! :)

I hope to talk to like minded people about the great books that are out there.
Take it easy.

My first language is french, so I grew up with Asterix, Tintin, Lucky Luket, but I live in Montreal, Canada, so I was a big fan of Superheros (X-men and Spiderman, mostly) and also Calvin and hobbes. I have neglected the superhero genre for the past few years. I missed a lot of background history. But I love books like Blanket, Persepolis, Maus. There is great comic books in Quebec also, my favourites are books by Michel Rabagliati and also Guy Delisle who is often on the list of best graphic Novels. Lately, I have started to read more mangas. So my taste are very diverse, but I don't know a lot of people in real life who read comics, and I wanted to have some recommendation and people to discussed with. So, here I am!

Good to be back! :)

My name's Russell and I'm from Malaysia. I think my love for comics started out as a kid when my mom would buy my siblings and I Archie comics. I was the kind of kid that watched a lot of TV and read a decent amount of books. In later years, I began to read less and almost completely stopped drawing. LAst year though, my love for comics was once again rekindled when I started reading again. I sorta want to make this a career and stuff so it all kinda adds up, really.
I'm pretty much into everything though full-on romance can bore me at times. If you'd asked me if I had a predilection towards any genre, I guess it'd be fantasy, psychology and horror. It's an odd mix but there are books like that, I guess! Anyways, I guess I joined this group to get to know some people with similar interests and stuff. Yeah.

Good luck for your career!

Thanks, Nadine!
Hello all.
My name is William but I typically go by Bill. I read graphic novels pretty regularly, and lately find myself a little unsure what to try out next. Been on Goodreads for awhile primarily using it for tracking my non-graphic novel reading.
I'd say I've read a pretty good variety of graphic novels if a little light on the independent labels. As far as favorite authors I think I'm leaning toward Warren Ellis, followed up by Brian K Vaughn, Grant Morrison and Robert Kirkman. When it comes to artists I probably like Kevin Maguire, Francis Manpaul and Chris Bachalo best of all.
Most recently finished Kirby: Genesis and Planetary Volume 1.

Welcome! There's so much to love!

I'm Anaïs. I joined this group, because I love to read graphic novels.
I like Batman comics (the killing joke; batman black and white), but I'm also interested in graphic novels like Persepolis.
It's nice to meet you : )

I love this website and group. See you in the comments :)

My name is Chris. I'm from Huntington Beach, CA, USA. This group (or rather, an online discussion group centered around comics) is the reason I joined goodreads. I love reading, especially comic books and graphic novels, and I find a lot of joy in sharing and discussing what I've read with others. When it comes to comics in particular, however, only a few of my friends read them and fewer still read them regularly enough to talk about them. I often find myself reading a comic and thinking to myself, "I can't believe that just happened!" and I want to yell and shout about it with someone else who is emotionally attached to these characters.
Well, thanks to all of you for being those someones who will share in my excitement!
Some of the books I'm currently reading are Saga, Wonder Woman, East of West and Thor: God of Thunder. There are plenty of others too that I've forgotten to list.
Can't wait for the discussions and (hopefully) suggestions and good finds for more books I should read!
Thanks,
Chris

I am looking forward to buddy-reading and discussing graphic novels/manga and other what-not with all of you.
I have all of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, a couple of The Walking Dead, Hellblazer, Fables, Batman, Sin City, We3 and a few others.
Thanks Kenny for the invite! ^_^
