message 551: by Simon (new)

Simon (scolton97) Hey everyone, I'm Simon and I just joined the group, I'm from Ireland and I love comic books and graphic novels!
I've been reading and collecting about 3 years now, and I'm a huge DC Comics fan, especially when it comes to Batman.

message 552: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (aaaaaaaaaaaandrew) Hi, I'm obsessed, I read 1-2 TPBs/GNs a day. I buy books on the cheap, but I mostly get things from the library.

message 553: by Jim (new)

Jim (runawaybastard) | 39 comments Welcome Simon, Batman's my favorite superhero. Also, I think I like DC more than Marvel, but that's just probably because most of the stuff I've read so far are either from DC or Vertigo. I'm correcting it right now by reading a lot of stuff from Marvel.

Hi Andrew, have fun with the group!

message 554: by Teddy (new)

Teddy Marcelo (tedinthepaint) Hey everyone, I'm Teddy. I've been reading comics strictly in trade format for about 4 years now. I have a soft spot in my heart for DC/Vertigo since I started my collection with Y: The Last Man and Fables, but have learned to branch out (particularly towards Image-they're on fire as of late with Saga, Prophet, The Manhattan Projects, Invincible, etc.). Grant Morrison is probably my favorite writer and I'm pretty upset he's now off monthly titles for DC...

message 555: by Mel (new)

Mel (metermouse) | 50 comments Yalonda wrote: "I love Asterios Polyp. I also like Habibi by Craig Thompson, V for Vendetta by Allan Moore and The Last Man Series."

Welcome Yalonda!

I am a fellow non-superhero reader. Asterios Polyp is on my "to read" list, so far I've heard very good things about it. I haven't read Habibi yet, but I did enjoy Blankets.

message 556: by Jim (new)

Jim (runawaybastard) | 39 comments Welcome Teddy! I think Image is one of the best imprints out there now, The Walking Dead really helped them become popular. I'm reading Saga now too, and I hope to read Y: The Last Man and Fables. From what I hear, Grant Morrison is a great writer, I should read books by him.

message 557: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (aaaaaaaaaaaandrew) Morrison is excellent, I'm reading We3 right now

message 558: by Mike (new)

Mike I'm Mike from Chicago. I joined to get some recommendations, talk about current comics and to reminisce about the stories of the past. I make mine Marvel, but I also currently enjoy a few titles from Dark Horse and Image

message 559: by Rust (new)

Rust Hi all!

Teddy wrote: Grant Morrison is probably my favorite writer"

Andrew wrote: "Morrison is excellent

The Invisibles is life-changing. My favourite comic.

J wrote: " I'm reading Saga now too, "

The volume 1 I ordered is just arrived and I already finished, it was great. Very cool characters, quite an original (well, nice merging from classics) story too.

message 560: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (aaaaaaaaaaaandrew) I wish I could afford to buy some volumes of The Invisibles, I've only read the first volume.

I'm rereading his Arkham Asylum graphic novel, trying to get a better appreciation of it.

Go for the second volume-Apocalipstick-at least, one of my favourites.

As far as I remember, AA had stunning artwork, but the plot was... missing. Not the usual cerebral Morrison's style, still, it wasn't so bad.

message 562: by Alex (new)

Alex Harris-MacDuff (pieford) Hi! I'm Alex and have been into comics for a pretty long time. Alan Moore has secured his place as Greatest Living Englishman in my world, and I've never read a comic of his that hasn't astounded me.

I'm a big fan of 2000ad and want to see if anyone else around here knows what I mean by 'Borag Thungg, Earthlet!'.

So yeah, hi there!

message 563: by Alex (new)

Alex Harris-MacDuff (pieford) Andrew wrote: "I'm rereading his Arkham Asylum graphic novel, trying to get a better appreciation of it."

It took me a couple of goes with Arkham Asylum, I really like the artwork from Dave McKean, it's astonishingly good and nuanced,

message 564: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (aaaaaaaaaaaandrew) The artwork in Arkham Asylum just annoyed me the first time I read it, I'm definitely appreciating the artwork a lot more this time. Nuanced is absolutely the word I would use to describe it.

message 565: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (aaaaaaaaaaaandrew) I've got 31 books to read, I must not go to the library again for a while, I hope I can restrain myself.

I didn't care for it at all until my girlfriend, who doesn't read a lot of comics, read it and loved it. It made me think I must've been missing something, and I was! It's much better than I gave it credit for, although I still prefer The Killing Joke.

I know how you feel! So many books on my shelf just waiting to be read.

message 567: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (atomicempress) | 1 comments Hey everybody my name is Pammie. I'm 27 and I've always been into Marvel and DC but when I got to know my current boyfriend he recommend I read the Sin City books before seeing the movie and I loved them. After that I got into Watchmen and then I discovered all on my lonesome my favorite comic addiction Fables. I recently got all the trades I was not caught up on and am re-reading them. And I also just recently finish vol. 1 of the walking dead condominium. I just started taking a class on coursera called comic books and graphic novels and someone over there linked to here as a suggestion.

Hi Ryouko, Cory, J, Jaime, Camilla, Mercurial, Yolanda, Simon, Teddy, Mike, Alex, and Pamela. Welcome to the group. Enjoy your stay here and please note there are 4 book discussions currently going on for this month of September. There are 4 book discussions slated for October after the poll results. Please feel free to join all the other various discussions in the group.

message 569: by Antonio (new)

Antonio Hi! I'm Antonio from Spain. I started reading graphic novels with 300 and Sin City, and since then I developed a kind of love for good comics.
I joined the group for sharing and getting recommendations. The last comic I'm really enjoying is "Locke&Key". I'm also fan of the work of Thomas Ott.
To finish, a question: I heard that there is a graphic novel from where they took the character of Riddick for the movies. Does anyone know if this is true? Everything I found related to Riddick seems to have been done after the movies...

message 570: by Paul (new)

Paul | 286 comments Hi Antonio, welcome to the group.
I'm not too sure about a Riddick comic, but I do know there was an animated Riddick movie which kind of links Pitch Black and the Riddick Chronicles.
The animation is a little cartoony/anime inspired, but the story's actually decent.

message 571: by Jesse (new)

Jesse | 7 comments Hello, I'm Jesse. I want to read more books so I'm gonna home in on the monthly book club picks I got The Boys and Ex Machina thanks to this group. Other than that, I'm currently reading Locke & Key.

Hi Paul. Thanks for the info. I also know about that animated movie, but I will keep looking for that Riddick comic, if it is true it exists.

message 573: by Geoffrey (new)

Geoffrey | 3 comments This looks like a great group. As someone that looks at new comic properties and promotes them, I am interested in what draws you all to a great story. Has anyone read Ex Machina yet?

message 574: by Jim (new)

Jim (runawaybastard) | 39 comments Geoffrey, welcome firstly. Ex Machina is actually an optional pick for this month. I'll get around to reading it soon to contribute to the thread.

message 575: by Tomson (new)

Tomson Titus (tomsontitus) I don't think I've introduced myself yet. I'm Tomson and I got into comics more seriously after reading V for Vendetta, The Watchmen and Kingdom Come. I prefer graphic novels to series because I like having the beginning middle and end now rather than have to keep buying a series. Just a personal preference. I would probably keep up with a series of some kind if it was economically viable.

message 576: by Silvia (new)

Silvia (silviargh) | 1 comments Hello!
I'm Silvia, I'm from Italy and I've only recently got into comics. To be precise I used to read comics when I was little but then because of various reasons I stopped and now I'm trying to get back to it because damn it, comics are great.

message 577: by Jim (new)

Jim (runawaybastard) | 39 comments Welcome Tomson! I like graphic novels more too but you can wait for TPBs of a series to get them cheaper, or you can try looking for a library near you and who knows, maybe they have comics too. Among the three comics you've mentioned, I haven't read Watchmen yet, and I agree the other two are great.

Welcome Silvia! I've recently just read comic books too. The Walking Dead got me started, though in reality when I was a kid I read a thick graphic novel about Superman and I was impressed on the story and how it completely blew away my expectations with comics. Now I can't stop reading comics too, it's a great way to read up on a lot of stories and I love stories.

message 578: by Stephen (new)

Stephen | 6 comments Hi there, been a big comic fan since my first issue of 2000ad when I was 12. Joining the group with he hope of finding new things to read and enjoy. Thanks.

message 579: by Jim (new)

Jim (runawaybastard) | 39 comments Welcome Stephen! Try looking at our monthly discussion threads and there's also an ongoing suggestions thread for November reads. Hope you find a lot of stuff you'll like here.

Also, the poll is up for voting the group members' choice for the November book discussion. Please feel free to join all the other various discussions in the group.

And Jim thanks to you for welcoming the new members to our group in a timely manner. Thanks man.

Jim (runawaybastard) | 39 comments No problem, my pleasure.

message 582: by Michael (new)

Michael Peters | 7 comments Hello, I'm Mike. I've been reading comics for as long as I can remember. Conan and Swamp Thing (reprints of the Barry Smith and Berni Wrightson drawn stuff especially) were favorites. Then I discovered Frank Miller, Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman...

I'd hoped, when I was in my 20s, back in the '90s, that I'd break into the biz, in time to draw an issue of Gaiman's The Sandman, but my first publication, drawing a short story, for a small, indie company, happened the same summer Sandman ended.

I've drawn a book for Image, another for Caliber, written and drawn (and sometimes painted)short stories for Heavy Metal Magazine and Negative Burn.
I've just published my first, full, graphic novel, Crescent City Magick and am working on the sequel.

Although it's probably not realistic to hope the chance to draw something for it, I am very interested to read Neil Gaiman's new Sandman material. I'm also looking forward to reading Mike Mignola's "Hellboy in Hell", once it's out in a collected book.

message 583: by Jim (new)

Jim (runawaybastard) | 39 comments Welcome Mike! I checked the preview of your graphic novel on Amazon and I am really impressed, as a review said, the artwork is really great. The story looks really interesting too, from what little I've read of the preview. Being able to draw, for big names in the comic book industry must give you a great feeling. I hope to learn how to draw, I can only do stick figures and I think being able to draw so well like you do is a God given gift.

I also hope to read the new Sandman material, I hope it wouldn't disappoint us fans.

Good luck on the sequel of your book, I hope to read your books in the future.

message 584: by Maria Angelica (new)

Maria Angelica | 1 comments Hi :) My name is Maria Angelica and I started reading comic books about two years ago. I'm currently in school right now, but try to read as much as possible when I have free time. I would love to get reading suggestions from anyone!

message 585: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome to the group Mike. It's nice to know that illustrators in the sequential art world can drop by our group to say hello and introduce themselves. I loved your work on Hellboy and BPRD by the way. I still remember buying Hellboy Weird Tales several years ago right after the movie came out. Again thanks for introducing yourself to our group.

Welcome to the group Maria Angelica. Just to let you know I did receive your inquiry and have replied. I hope the reference books help you out in regards to your inquiry. As for the type of graphic novels/comic books, feel free to browse on the book recommendations topic in the General Discussions folder. There are hundreds of posts there regarding graphic novels the members have recommended.

Have a good week everyone.

Jim (runawaybastard) | 39 comments Welcome Maria Angelica, hope to see you on our book discussions :)

message 587: by Sriram (new)

Sriram Jaju (sriramjaju) | 2 comments Hi, I'm Sriram from Bamgalore, India. I love the works of Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, Frank Miller, Jeph Loeb, Scot Snyder. Currently I'm reading Sandman series. Looking forward for good recommendations.

Jim (runawaybastard) | 39 comments Welcome to the group Sriram, The Sandman is a great series. Hope you find it great once you finish it.

message 591: by Kenneth (new)

Kenneth Morrison | 4 comments Hi All,

My name is Kenne from San Francisco. I've been a comic book reader since the early 80s when my friends introduced me to a little book known as Secret Wars. I was hooked and became a rabid comic reader right from the start. The interesting thing was that the moment I got into Comics was the moment that my friends grew bored with them and moved on to other things.

I'm primarily a Marvel guy, but I like DC, Image and other independent stuff. Some of my favorite authors are Neil Gaiman (especially Sandman), Alan Moore (especially Top Ten), Geoff Johns (his Green Lantern work blew me away), Judd Winnick ("Pedro and Me" changed my life), Christos Gage (read "Avengers Intiative" trust me), Tony Moore ("Strangers in Paradise" is some of the best literature I've ever read) and Tony Bedard (Negation & Exiles).

I discovered this group because I saw NYKen's graphic novel reviews and was glad to find a group like this.

message 592: by Jim (new)

Jim (runawaybastard) | 39 comments Welcome Kenne, that's quite a list of authors you've got there. I've only read Gaiman and Moore from that list, and the way you mentioned the others makes me want to read their works. Also, there's an ongoing poll right now for the November book discussions, it'll be great if you can cast your vote.

message 593: by Kenneth (new)

Kenneth Morrison | 4 comments Thanks for the welcome, Jim. I'm glad you liked my list of authors. These are the authors that I pay particular attention to their works when I hear about them. I have others that I could add to the list when I have time to think it out. There's honestly been so much good stuff put out in the comic book/ graphic novel arena that it's hard to keep up. If you do check out the other author's I've mentioned, I would love to hear your thoughts about their works. Also, thanks for the heads up about the poll. I'll look for it right now and chime in.

message 594: by Ian (new)

Ian Lewis (sleepylewis) Hey, my name's Ian. I was always comic curious about comics growing up but didn't have the resources or exposure to truly know what was out there. I started taking it all more seriously when I came across The Watchmen. It was a game changer for me.

Since then I have dabbled here and there but find the sheer volume of material available to be a bit intimidating. I mean, where does one start? That's why I came to this group; it's a place for me to learn about the classics as well as what's amazing and new.

Cheers!

message 595: by Stephan (new)

Stephan Bugenhagen | 3 comments Hi, Stephan here ! From Berlin, Germany. I started reading comicbooks again in the 90s when I discovered Frank Millers Dark Knight by pure coincidence. For a time i read mostly darkhorse when they were doing the Legend stuff.....but right now i read like everything from DC, Marvel, IDW, Image......whatever gets my attention. I haven't delved too deep into this app but i hope I don't offend anybody by not reading everything printed on paper but just got hooked by the comixology-guys.

message 596: by Jim (new)

Jim (runawaybastard) | 39 comments Kenne, I agree I can't keep up with all the great releases in the comic book form, there are just so many great titles that I can't even finish my current stack of to-reads.

Hello and welcome Ian, I also didn't have what you didn't have back then too. Then, I made an online friend and he told me what's the good stuff and that got me on the road to reading a lot of great comic books and now I'm finding stuff on my own too. I think it's great that you sought out comic book groups, and landed on this one. I think you'll find there are a lot of users here with a lot of books to recommend, and of course there's always the monthly group discussions.

Hello there Stephan, and welcome. Believe it or not, I've only read two comic books in print: one a Superman graphic novel back when I was a kid and One Month 2 Live which I bought just recently. Almost everything I read was Digital. Frank Miller's work on Batman are classics, I think people can become comic fans just by reading those. I think no one's offended by the way, what's important is we're all reading the same things and discussion is what we're after here anyway.

message 597: by Peter (new)

Peter Adams | 4 comments Hello all, I'm Peter from London in the UK.
I've been reading comics for over 40 years now from Tintin to Locke & Key by way of The Spirit & Watchmen & though they have changed hugely in that time they will always be my first love!

I couldn't pick a 'best ever' to recommend, way too much good stuff, but am currently really enjoying Scott Snyder & Greg Capullo's work on Batman

message 598: by Jim (new)

Jim (runawaybastard) | 39 comments Welcome Peter, nice to see another Batman fan here. I bet you're looking forward to the finale of Locke & Key too, but I was informed by another member that it might be delayed for a month. In the meantime, we have two new titles for our November monthly discussions: Scalped vol. 1 and Public Enemies vol.1. Hope you can join the discussions, and of course, hope you have fun in the group.

message 599: by David (new)

David (kavind) | 18 comments Hello, I am David and I live in Los Angeles.
I have been reading since I was about three, but once I started school, I was too advanced for the rest of the class and asked to slow down by my teacher. I got lazy and over time forgot what i had learned to the point that in 3rd grade I was almost completely unable to read any longer. If not for an interest in comic books, I never would have been bale to pull myself back up as quickly as I did.
I am prodominantly interested in alternative comics like "Love And Rockets", "Cerebus:, anything by Seth, Louis Trondheim and Johann Sfar.
I used to be in a graphic novel reading group and really enjoyed that experience. The only issue with the group was the turn out was often minimal.

message 600: by Jim (new)

Jim (runawaybastard) | 39 comments Welcome Rom, congratulations on your first comic. I'd love to read it but I don't have a Kindle. You can suggest your comic when we have the poll for our next monthly discussions.

Welcome David. This is my first graphic novel reading group and I like it here. I like alternative comics too, I think I'll grab a title by Seth.
