I'm Hardish, I recommended a graphic novel to my Book Club and you'd think I'd suggested reading 'Janet and John'.
So lovely to be intouch with those who eyes wont glaze over. I've read my way through Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, Mike Cary, Bill WIllingham, Brian Vaughan amongst others. And I'm always glad to get recommendations for new authors.

I'm Curtis from Edmonton, Canada. I'm a big comic book fan. I follow a handful of monthly books, and pick up the occaisionall graphic novel too.
I like a wide variety of comics, and look forward to some good discussions!
A few good reads that stand out for me are Watchmen, Finder, Omega the Unknown, and Skyscrapers of the Midwest. I'm also looking forward to the big DC Relaunch coming in September.
Cheers!
Curtis

Hi, I'm Antía and I write from Spain. I am more of prose reader than graphic novels, but most of what I've read, I really enjoyed, specially "Maus", "Blankets", a little of "Sandman" and some by Allan Moore, but apart of that I'm quite ignorant, but willing to learn and read more! Oh yes, I found this group by the link on the "On reading graphic novels" group, searching for some group readings.

I have a really great interest in comic books and hope this will be a good place for discussing them.
My tastes are eclectic, but I guess I tend to enjoy more indie stuff than mainstream.
By the way Ken, you created a lot of categories but you forgot the one that I find more interesting, that is "Non-Superheroes Independent". There's a lot of essential stuff that falls under that.
Thanks

My name is Lori, and I'm a current graduate student studying computer science. I have an undergraduate degree in English literature, focusing on Shakespeare, and five years of professional copy editing experience.
I love reading all types of things, particularly fantasy more than science fiction; however, I've picked up a few nonfiction titles lately too.

I actually live close to Barcelos but I had to check wikipedia because I didn't remember the story. :)

@NYKen, yes, El Cid is the most famous spanish knight, he's protagonist of The Poem of the Cid: Dual Language Edition, epic poem written in 11th Century. It's partly historical and partly legend. I admit I only remember reading fragments of it in Spanish class in high-school.. I think there are several film versions, but I asume the most famous one is the with Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren, or at least it's the one that is aired on spanish tv from time to time.
I'll try reading with you the chosen ones that are published here, but I admit I'm currently more interested in Watchmen.. I've been meaning to read it for ages but I think I need a little push :)

Hello Antía. You're right, we are almost neighbors :P
I've also been a bunch of times to Vigo. Seems like a nice city :)

Im Jay from Illinois. I have been reading comics off and on (mostly on) since the mid 80's. I used to collect the monthly issues but ran out of room in my house so I have switched to the collected trades. Now my bookshelves are getting heavy. I love to read other fiction as well. I usually have a novel and a comic trade going at the same time.

Thanks for the invitation Ken!

What is it like there in Barcelos?
Well, it's kind of hard for me to describe it since it's not too different of any middle-sized portuguese town.
It has an interesting city center, which is made of older buildings, some going back to the middle ages. Then around the "old town" there's newer neighborhoods which are kind of ugly and disregard any sense of good urban planning.
NYKen wrote: "@ Sergio - I believe you are correct. I better check Wikipedia indeed. Thanks for the correction Sergio.

NYKen, Vigo is in the north-west coast of Spain (the area is called Galicia) very close to the frontier with Portugal. I think it's nice.. but what can I say, it's my home! :) The culture here in Galicia is closer, I think to Ireland than the typical idea of Spain (no flamenco music/dancing and weather is quite rainy) but I think we have a nice celtic culture. In case you've heard of it, the main town in Galicia is Santiago de Compostela, that has a cathedral that has brought pilgrims since medieval times to nowadays. There is an american film based on it, "The way" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8yRlN.... I leave here link to entry (in English) of wikipedia about Galicia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galicia_... and link to tourism in Vigo http://www.galiciaguide.com/Vigo-inde...

I'm Angela from the UK. I tend to read any type of graphic novel, or at least I am willing to give them a go.
Hello,
I'm Brian from Nashville, TN. I read all kids of comics, at least one a night for the past few years :) My favorite genre is probably noir / crime or just freaky stuff. Although, I do still read the super hero stuff. Anything by Vertigo basically is usually of interest to me. Or dark horse, or idw, or... just about anything!

First graphic novel I ever picked up was Sandman, and that only because I saw Neil Gaiman's name attached to it. However, I've been delighted by the possibilities and varieties the field offers.
@Brain I'm never disappointed by Vertigo or Dark Horse!

@ Ellie - Yes, by all means check out The Unwritten. I know of three volumes out at the time, and it might be u..."
Hey NYKen....I just got the first volume of The Unwritten, one can never go wrong with Vertigo.
Here's a link to a tour of Comic-Con done by yours truly and in my channel I added other about the freebies, masquerade, the Doctor Who panel and others.

I live in Colorado and have been collecting comic books, trade paperbacks and graphic novels since the seventies. I read a lot of science fiction and other assorted weirdness that intrigues me.
My 'books to read' list is massive, and I've obsessively chosen to organize it into a chronological order, along with two boxes of comics and graphic novels that I've purchased over the last ten years but haven't read yet. I post reviews here on Good Reads of everything I cross off the list, and then later I expand on the review in a group blog I contribute to, the Quorum of Gentlemen (http://theqog.blogspot.com/). I would love for like-minded folks to look that over and contribute commentary.
More importantly, I look forward to perusing conversations here and identifying books and trades that should be added to my list!
B. Jay

Between my wife and I, we currently own 1751 trades and hardcovers. (Collecting for 25 years.) So, yes, we are very active collectors.
My wife works in advertising and I am a Network Engineer and Combat instructor (on the side).
I am looking forward to seeing what everyone reads and possibly getting some new ideas of books I haven't considered.

So without further ado - Hello, World. :)
Hello everyody. I'm Tommy from California. I am new to reading graphic novels, so I'm looking to pickup new recommendations from this group.

@ NYKen - I just finished reading Volume 1, very good! The last part looks like it has nothing to do with the story until the end. I'll be getting Volume 2 from the library now. Thanks!

I'm here 'cause I was invited and since I love graphic novels...
I'm a Vertigo & DC Comics lover but I can read all kinds of stuff, I'm not too picky about it since the book is good. Personally I think Neil Gaiman is some kind of genius and I absolutely love his work, especially Sandman and Coraline.
Often called "bat-geek" by my friends, it's up to you to find out why.
Currently I'm addicted Fables.
Well, I'm not a very sociable person so if people don't talk to me, probably I'll just lurk the group in silence.
And it's good to know that I have another portuguese in here, I'm not feeling so alone.
Well, The Name is Daniel, from the US.

As I mentioned, Sandman has a special place in my heart. I also really like a lot of stuff by Grant Morrison and Warren Ellis. I've not read as much work that isn't in some way a deconstruction or deviation from the form.
In addition to graphic novels I read a little bit of just about every genre. I typically have 5-8 books going at a time, what with BotM reads and my own choices. I try to not overlap genres, when possible. I've read far more than I have in quite some time since joining goodreads this year. My hobbies tend to ebb and flow like that. In addition to reading, I tend to spend a lot of time watching stuff with my boyfriend, knitting, listening to music and cooking or baking. I also enjoy gaming, although I've neglected it since I began reading this much.

I started back in with comics about ten years ago with Transmetropolitan and Preacher, and those blew me away - so my tastes have been always biased towards the crazy, the vile and the imaginative. Great writing above all else, though great art can elevate good writing and bad art can destroy even great writing.
In those ten years I've read probably 50% Marvel, 30% indie and 20% DC. I can't believe that Marvel locked up *all* the good writers, but it's amazing to me how much more involved I get in Marvel stories than DC - I think it's because DC's universe is very intellectually rooted (and thus gets way too focused on the continuity to the point of having to reboot every decade or so), but Marvel's universe is so much more rooted in the heart (and thus gets away with more sloppy recasting of continuity without getting too freaked about the details). Feel free to disagree - that's just how the universes happen to hit me.
I ran across someone once on Goodreads that observed that we shouldn't get too worried about whether a book is "in character" and "in continuity", but rather whether the *story* is good - read it for what it's worth on its own, and if you enjoy it don't worry so much about whether it agrees with everyone that came before it.
I enjoy the hell out of the best capes stories, but I get more of a kick out of the stories that don't revere the powers types - Boys, Powers, Gotham Central, Deadpool all good stuff. I find myself, after reading hundreds of superheroes trades, getting more and more interested in the indies - Chew, Atomic Robo, Goon, Unwritten. But secretly, I'm a huge fan of the really sick senses of humour that folks like Ennis, Ellis & Fraction can all put on when they're free to be.
Like B.Jay, I've got about 200-odd graphic novels I've purchased but never read ('cause the library seems to keep getting so many good books in).
Ive Read and Own Some Of Kevin Smith's Green Arrow...I really enjoyed that being a GREEN ARrow Fan myself.

I got that recommendation from a book a day calendar!! After I saw how great graphic novels can be, I went berserk searching for them everywhere.
I like series that are bizarre or horror. I am currently LOVING Locke & Key: Welcome to Lovecraft, Volume 1series and also American Vampire Vol. 1.
But I also like smaller, intimate series like Blankets, Mister Wonderful: A Love Story etc.
There really is so much to choose from.
I also belong to a few blogs that keep me updated with all the releases of comics.
The quality of graphic novels is so incredible these days, both art and story, that I feel like an insider, since a lot of other readers think less of graphic novels that the 'written word'.
I created a topic about TV, since graphic novels are making a splash in TV and movies.

I joined this group when I saw mention of Charles Burns' "Black Hole" - what a great book, and not one of the usual suspects you normally see people discussing!
The last graphic novel I read was "Low Moon" by Jason, which I also really enjoyed.
I'm looking forward to reading what people here think of Black Hole, and also to getting some sweet recommendations!
Thanks for starting the group Ken! :)

I was inspired to start reading graphic novels when I taught American Born Chinese to my 10th grade English students. One of them recommended Watchmen, I read it, and now I am hooked.
Looking forward to hearing about what's good out there.
Thanks!
Tracey
Tracey...For Graphic Novel's Go, V for Vendetta and The League of Extradorinary Gentlemen both of them By Alan Moore...Are really good..

I love Ex Machina, I haven't finished the series yet, but it is good stuff!
WEll i grew up not understanding for the life of me why Superman didn't fight World War 2 single handedly.
I grew up on Superman, Supergirl and Classic Comics.
Classic Comics got me interested in reading and that led to writing.
I'm published now in short story anthologies and have written my first novel with the sequel following.
Graphic novels are a great art form and contriubte much to literature in general.
I am delighted John invited me here.
When i get less busy I'd love to do a graphic novel--I had the idea for a campy '50's kind of thing.
anyway glad to meet you all.

my name is Matko, born and raised in Croatia, almost in the middle of nowhere :D But that didn't stop me to become an avid reader of comics, graphic novels included.
I'm always in search for a good place to share thoughts on comics, talk about this and that, and generally have a good time. Hope I will find here everything mentioned above.
I've read "Black hole" and "Watchmen" few years back, and looking forward to see what other people think about them. Going there now...
Cheers to all.

I am a Comic Book fan and thought this would be an interesting group to join. The comics I read are the DC comics (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, etc).

My name is Lewis and I'm living in Manchester, UK.
Love to read comic books and graphic novels so I thought it'd be pretty cool to join this group.
Hmmmm, I really do find it hard to pick favourites but if I were forced I reckon - MAUS and Sin City.
Just voted for transmet in the second reading poll, defo's up for reading vol.1 again :)
