For some danish/scandinavian input: I did though grow up reading Valhalla; illustrated by Peter Madsen; and they are all absolutely lovely.
I'm Manette and I live in Arizona. In the past year I really got into graphic novels. I started with Gaiman's Sandman because I already knew him from his novels but I've really been branching out and would love to get more recommendations. So far for favorites I'm split between Terry Moore's Echo and Brian K. Vaughan's Y: The Last Man although I haven't had a chance to finish the latter; three volumes to go!

I'm Jeremy. I live in Michigan. I used to collect individual issues but got away from it. A friend recently got me back into comics, although I read them in graphic novel or trade form. I'm a big Batman and X-Men guy but I also like (love) Mouse Guard.

Hey, I'm Ryan. I love comics, but I only read them in collected (trade paperback etc) editions, as there's too little story in a single issue for me. I don't usually care for superhero comics (with a few exceptions: namely, Zot!, The Umbrella Academy, and Watchmen). But I do adore comics in general, though I always feel like I've read so little.
Some of my favorites:
Zot! (Scott McCloud)
Bone (Jeff Smith)
Moonshadow (J.M. DeMatteis and Jon J. Muth)
Death Note (Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata)
works by Osamu Tezuka (including Phoenix and Ode to Kirihito)

Hey Grace, I'm not overly familiar with Booster Gold but from what I do know of him I agree with you, he's awesome!

Yes, it's so true! I just read Booster Gold, 52 pickup and it was awesome! Also, you should read (If you haven't already,)
Justice League International, Vol. 1 and Formerly Known as the Justice League International is just a good comic and the one punch knockout is in it! And the other one has a more Booster Gold and if you read it you should read JLA Classified, Vol. 2: I Can't Believe It's Not the Justice League In that one is lots of making fun of Booster Gold dumbness.
Welcome to the group Grace. The 52 series from DC had Booster Gold as one of its primhary protagonists. It was fantastic. And his series after that was phenomenal as well.

Thanks for the recommendations!
Hi I'm Roy and im just a comic book lover and i love reading comic books and graphic novels and i have a collection and love talking about them.

I have always been interested in the Batman mythos so I lean heavily on trades in that arena. I've since grown a fondness for the worlds of Superman, Green Lantern, X-Men and others as well. Being in my late 30's though, I also read a lot of more "literary" and "adult" graphic fiction and non-fiction. I'm a big fan of Robert Crumb's work and I've thoroughly enjoyed Asterios Polyp, My Friend Dahmer, The Nao Of Brown and Essex County. I look forward to chatting about the medium with everyone.
Welcome to the group Roy and Brian. Enjoy your stay here at the group. There is an upcoming two book discussion with the group. Feel free to join the discussions of any topic/thread here at the group. Have a good week.

I'm interested in further book club selections. Is there a specific date to read these titles by or a date when everyone gets on to discuss? Thanks!
thanks for the welcome i enjoy talking about graphic novels with this group.

I hope to get some advice in time as to others I should be reading. I'll say this, I love super hero stuff, though I'm most familiar with Batman.

I've never seen a graphic novel in my life, and I'm looking forward to participating in the group. Thanks :)

Welcome to the group Lit Bug, Matt, and Seth. Enjoy your stay and please feel free to join in on the various topics of discussions.

I'm Tzipora, from the Detroit area, and I'm a big graphic novel fan. I have a lot of serious and complex health issues which has actually played a role in getting me interested in graphic novels in some ways. I've always been a voracious reader with eclectic taste (eclectic would be a good description for me in general ;) but being sick and in and out of hospitals and just not having a lot of energy and often not being as "cognitively on" as I used to be makes it hard to read sometimes. Graphic novels are great because they're quicker reads and I often read a few between reading rather long books because it helps move me along.
At least that's why I started reading them. Now I just love them and have read almost everything in the library system in my area (a huge amount of libraries in a 100 mile radius are connected in a system so you can easily access other libraries content.) and I've been buying graphic novels a lot. I also went wild on free comic book day and hopped comic shops all over south east MI and scored 85 comics! 70 of which were free. I'm just reading comics for pretty much the first time now. Not so much my thing.
I'm not really into superheroes or manga. I've dabbled in both a bit but I'm really into graphic novels along the lines of Perseopolis, Fun Home, Maus, Habibi, etc. I'm also a big art fan and buy or read some if I just really like the art style. I'm interested in trying to create my own graphic novel actually. Just lacking the energy but it'd be fun.
Subjects that interest me most include Jewish themes and I'm building up quite a collection of Israeli works also. I was a Middle East Studies major so any work out of the Middle East strongly appeals. Love GLBT and also health/illness related work. But really if its non-manga or superhero there's a very high chance I'd read it or already have. :)

Hi Tzipora. I read your introduction and thought maybe I could offer you some recommendations. One that particularly comes to mind is The Nao of Brown. It was one I could relate to pretty well, having dealt with anxieties myself. Also, My Friend Dahmer was so hard to put down. It was nervy, unsettling and fascinating. Anything by Harvey Pekar is worth a look. I enjoy Robert Crumb, though he's not for everyone. Anyway, welcome to the group!
Brian

My name's Stefani. I'm a 22-year-old geek from Scotland. BtVs was my gateway comic and ever since discovering my local comic book store I spend far too much time and money in there. Saga is my favourite comic but I also have a soft spot for Chew. I prefer non-superhero stories but do like to occasionally indulge into some supery goodness.

Welcome to the group TJ, Christa, Tzipora, Steve, Stefani, and Marcus. Please feel free to browse to the various topics and participate in the ones that take your interest(s). Hopefully you all can find some graphic novels that might interest you from all the topics that talk about various graphic novels. Take care and enjoy your time here.

I do not read comics, I like a good stand alone or a compilation of issues. Not that I don't like the idea of reading in issues, but I don't think I can afford to support a CB habit. So I'm hoping to find some deals/freebies. I've read just about everything interesting in my campus library from Maus to Sandman and a bunch of Superman's and Wolverine novels in between. Right now I'm jonzing for a Batman fix (and $10 for Arkham Asylum which I'll read in a day is little steep) so I'll probably take out a library card and see what I can find there.
Thanks for the group, hope to find some interesting info here.

If you like dark stories then check out "Preacher". It has 9 volumes but they're standalone comics and they're great!

Thanks, I will check them out, I was beginning to think goodreads was getting kick backs because I see "Preacher" all over my recommendations page. But hearing from a random person on a group forum really seals it. I will no longer doubt the legitimacy of the goodreads recommendations.

I've read some of Gaimen's work before but recently picked up Preludes from HeroesCon and instantly wished I had bought more. Bone is the work that threw me into this magnificent world, with Deadpool as my current collecting series and some Harley Q on the side.

Elia here.
I wanted to participate in this it seems like a cool idea.
Some of my favorite books are:
Y the Last Man
Daredevil by Frank Miller/Bendis/Brubaker
Sleeper by Brubaker
X-Factor by Peter David
And lately I'm loving Sin City.
The only things I consistently collect are Daredevil and X-factor lately. Everything else is on a creator/review basis.

My love for comics started with Asterix & Obelix and the Ultimate X-men. It hasn't died yet. I never liked Batman or Captain America. I've been trying to catch up with the contemporary graphic novels, with special interest in eastern biographic ones :)
I joined so I could talk to more comic geeks and learn about books I would have missed otherwise. I'm open to suggestions :)

I've always enjoyed the thought of reading comic books (growing up with my older brothers reading them had put it into my head) but i have never been a strong reader. I did not like reading at school and always found my self getting impatient and frustrated with it.
So the begging of this year I made a real effort to stop watching movies and start reading more. Also everybody always tell me the books are better than the movies too.
So my uncle got me into reading the graphic novel called Preacher and I loved it, he had been telling me for years to read it and i always said i will one day and then just brushed it off. one day he went into his garage and pulled the old books out and gave them to me and told me not to speak to him until I finished the first book. I was hooked.
So far i have read
Preacher
The Punisher Max imprint
The dark knight returns
Batman the killing joke.
Y: The last man
The Uncanny X-men The Dark Phoenix Saga.
Looking forward to reading a lot more with the help of you guys recommending stuff.
Thanks
Laurence

I've been a comic book reader for life... for a spontaneous urgency I can't explain, I begged my mom for the X-Men comic from the ubiquitous supermarket spinner rack next to the checkout lane (I miss those). She relented and I have been hooked ever since. While I was lured into comics by the superheroes, I joined the popular migration to more serious titles in the 1980s -- Watchmen, Maus, Harvey Pekar, and the like -- and today read genres that encompass all titles.
What's more, I teach English literature/writing and am proud to have incorporated graphic novels in the classroom (in education it's better PR not to call them comics but who are we kidding?). In my class, iPads have made reading and discussing comics both practical and fun (while I miss the printed page, the digital medium is the most effective tool for group reading and interaction). I hope to enjoy comics whatever their format for many decades to come.
Thanks for this group and this topic! I would love to talk with anyone else sharing comics in the classroom.

Let me know if you'd like to connect with someone and I'll be happy to put you in touch.
Welcome to the group Alaina, Laurence, and Mathew.
