Hello, I'm María from Spain and sometime soon I'll have to move out to make room for my ongrowing book, film and comic collection. Last one I've read is Jason Lutes' Jar of Fools, which I loved.

C.C. Rogers (cc_rogers) | 5 comments Hi! I'm CC, in Austin, Texas.

When I was little, I would go to the comic stores with my older brother. At some point, I found a pile of Teen Titans back issues in the sale bin and started reading and collecting them, later branching out to several Batman and Robin titles.

After college, I stopped reading comics for a long time. Then I borrowed my friend's complete Sandman collection and remembered what I had been missing. Recently, I've been more inclined to read independent comics than the big two. I've also been making my own.

I'm looking forward to discovering new favorites and discussing them with folks here!

Christian Claflin (christianclaflin) Hey gang my name is Christian and I have decided to join this group because I wan't to be recommended to good graphic novels. I have read a few but would like to read even more.

message 307: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Thurman (errantghost) Hi,
Kevin Thurman here. Newly published writer working in both fiction and non-fiction - though fiction is my first love.

I am starting to break ground on my own little section of the comic book world.

I grew up on X-Men and other super-hero faire. Now, while I love super-heroes, I have a fascination and adoration for indie comics that favor characterization and story over splash pages and big punches.

message 308: by Sabby620 (new)

Sabby620 Hello!

my name is sarah i read all kinds of graphic novels as well as comics. i am just looking for some feedback on ones i have read and ones that i am thinking about reading!

message 309: by Leane (new)

Leane Charlotte | 1 comments Hi, I'm Leane. I'm 13 this year. I joined this group because I really do share my mom's love for graphic novels. Usually she's the one who buys them and reads them first, then only I get let to read them. But I'm a much faster reader than her, so I am ahead of her in a few such as Unwritten (I'm now at volume 5), Amulet and a few others. I have read many, though my favourites have to be Bone, Unwritten and Watchmen. My mother's favourite is Neil Gaiman's Sandman and Lucifer. She loves Neil Gaiman's books. My brother however, just loves anything and everything Marvel. I'm okay with Marvel, but I don't like Spiderman or the Avengers. I'm more into X-men. But one kind of graphic novel that my brother and I just go nuts over is Manga. We love it. My brother has an entire shelf just full of Manga. He reads many Manga at a time, but I prefer to read them one at a time. I'm currently reading Fairy Tail. That's it I guess... :)

message 310: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (mrsmelissa) Hi All :)

I'm just eating up biographies at the moment! I think that the Graphic Novel is a fantastic format for sharing difficult {that word just doesn't cut it in some instances} stories... I've also taken to reading Graphic Novels attached to my favourite TV shows & movies.

message 311: by Gerrrrry (new)

Gerrrrry (gerrrryyyy) Hello, my name is Vapaw. I live in NC. I absolutely love graphic novels, even though I have not read many. My favorite graphic novelist is Kazu Kibuishi.

message 313: by Luciano Salerno (new)

Luciano Salerno Hi everyone, nice to meet you!
I'm a regular comic-book reader for some years now, and always wanted to join a discussion group of everything I read (comic and non-comic alike), so when I saw this group I just thought it was just for me.
Pardon my english, it's not my primary language, so I try my best every time I write :)
By the way, currently reading Spiegelman's Maus and Moore/Gibbons's Watchmen, so I'm having a great time.
Regards!

message 314: by Paul (new)

Paul | 286 comments Bonjour,
My name is Paul, I live in a little town called Mascouche about 30km North of Montreal.
I've been reading comics for over 40 years and amassing them for the last 35 years or so. So yeah, they do take up alot of space :)
Thru the years, I've read pretty much all genres and, being francophone with a good working knowledge of English, I've been priviledged to read both American and European styles.
Reading has always been a great passion of mine... I even read those things that don't have any images in them... they're called "books" or something like that ;)
I've always been of the thought that "outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend... inside of a dog, it's too dark to read." - Groucho Marx

message 315: by Sérgio (new)

Sérgio | 459 comments Wow! There's so many new members that I'm not going to try to name them all.

Welcome everybody! :)

That's a nice quote there Paul.

message 316: by Travis (last edited Oct 21, 2012 03:58AM) (new)

Travis Berketa (travisberketa) G'day! My name is Travis Berketa and I'm from Melbourne, Australia (well, twenty minutes out of Melbourne). I've been collecting comics since I was younger and am big into the superhero genre. I'm also a writer, having had four books published. My first series Dark Heart (including Dark Heart: Images of a City [2007], Dark Heart: Angels in the City [2010] and Dark Heart: Beasts in the City [2012]) are adult crime fiction which have a Punisher flavour. While my other book 'Jack Majors: Superhero' is a YA novel that is about 16-year-old Jack Majors growing up with super powers.

My personal favourites, as far as characters go, would have to be Batman, Punisher [this does not include Frankencastle], Spiderman, Thor, Hulk and Moon Knight.

message 317: by Ehsan (new)

Ehsan El Kirdany (ehsanhatem) Hi! I'm Sunny from Cairo, Egypt.
I'm truly adamant about fantasy literature and graphic novels. I've loved reading ever since my mum got me into it (used to read to me when I was little.)
My all time favourite G.N. is the Sandman series by Neil Gaiman. Pure genius, that man is. I'd love to meet him some day.

I'm a primary teacher (first to fourth grade English) and love sharing my favourite reads with my kids (students.)

message 318: by Jade (new)

Jade Cone | 1 comments Hi! My name is Jade and I live in central Florida. I was raised around comics, always borrowing my dad's and pretending to be the superheroes I fell in love with. About 2 years ago, on my 20th birthday, my dad got me a few graphic novels to start my own collection and I've been expanding my collection ever since.

My personal favorites are Wonder Woman, Gotham City Sirens, and Scott Pilgrim. I mostly stick to DC, but I am always willing to try anything new with a really great story :)

message 319: by Jessie (new)

Jessie Radford (ladysdeath) Hi my name is Jessie. I have been a graphic novel fan for years now. I read all sorts of genres, and its just nice to meet people with the same interest.

Gaijinmama | 5 comments Hello and welcome to all my fellow newbies. Wow, what an international group we have here! I just wanted to thank you for the recommendations. My husband is NOT going to be pleased when he sees the credit card statement with all those purchases from Amazon.

message 321: by Putra (new)

Putra Perdana (putraperdana) | 1 comments Hi all, I would like to introduce myself here
My name is Putra Perdana from tropical Indonesia (hope you guys know where it is, most often my country is only associated with Bali)
While I'm drowning in Japanese GN's and manga, I grew up with the classic Spiderman and Wolverine series, not to mention some Dark Horse and obscure cult comics like the Comet and Spawn. I also read some of Patterson's GN: Maximum Ride series. I see you're all well versed in this culture so I hope to learn more and obtain wider references on GN's and comics.

Pleased to meet you all

message 322: by Sérgio (new)

Sérgio | 459 comments Welcome Davi, Travis, William, Ehsan, Jade, Jessie and Putra. :)

@Gaijinmama: I know what you mean. Graphic novels can get veeery addictive.

message 323: by Shawn (new)

Shawn Nelson (krnlkule) Hey there folks.. Long time comic reader, collector. There's not much I don't know about the Marvel universe. Love DC too but their a tad inconsistent in their trade releases.

And if it's written well and has art I'll most likely read it. L

Latest read is "Mind The Gap" vol 1. I highly recommend it.

message 324: by Mar (new)

Mar Mai (mar_mai) | 10 comments Hello all! I am an avid comic book reader that LOVES fantasy stories. Flight, Bone, The Amulet series, Jellaby and such YA comics are my faves for their lyrical sense of storytelling and fantastical landscapes. I also love love LOVE Chris Schweizer's Crogans Series and Stan Sakai's Usagi YoJimbo, which, in my humble opinion, should have been made into a movie YEARS ago!

I think the best kind of comic books are serials where you can really take your time to learn about the characters over a period of several books.

Star Wars comics are my childhood friends and all the superhero comics are a must read for any comic fan.

I recently became the author of a graphic novel myself, The Dragon Tutor. In one of those, write the book you would like to read events.

I'm really glad to join this graphic novel reading club! Sounds like my kind of place!

message 325: by Jason (new)

Jason (ciaosonojason) Hi all! I'm excited I found this group. I just joined this site today and have already joined a few neat groups. I love all types of literature, but graphic novels are among my favorites. I'm a comic geek at heart and have a huge collection. I just read Midnight Nation the other day and am reading The Darkness Accursed tpb at the moment. My other hobbies are linguistics and music. I'm a student, so comics/graphic novels are a great way for me to escape from the monotony of textbooks!

message 327: by Nicolas (new)

Nicolas Wilson | 9 comments Howdy. I'm Nic. I'm a novelist, currently living in Portland. I've written a few graphic novels, and interviewed some amazing writers.

I love series' like Transmetropolitan, Preacher, Hellboy as well as more classic characters. It has been a while since I really had money to collect as much as I used to. Always watching out for new, fun ones though. I like the crazy, the macabre, the topical.

message 328: by Ken (new)

Ken Raining | 4 comments Hi Everybody!

My name is Ken Raining, and I'm a reference librarian at the Easttown Library in Radnor, PA, and a lifelong comics fan. I actually joined this group at least a week ago, but this is the first chance I've had to post here!

Currently, I'm reading the new book Marvel Comics: the Untold Story, which I'm enjoying; after that, I'll probably be reading Jonathan Hickman's The Manhattan Projects.

Professionally, I'm looking to build up my library's gn collections, and I'm also beginning to do comics-specific programs. If anyone is in the greater Phila area and would like any information, feel free to let me know.

message 331: by Sophie (new)

Sophie | 7 comments Hi

I should have probable introduced myself before posting a discussion, apologies for breaking protocol.

I'm not a massive comic book/graphic novel reader myself, though I do have a few on my wish list (Neil Gaiman's Sandman really intrigues me).

I joined this group in the hope of getting some recommendations. There is such an array of choice available online that I could use a pointer in the right direction.

message 332: by Anthony (new)

Anthony | 5 comments whats up ya'll; I'm Anthony from NYC, originally did independent filmmaking & looked 2ward comics/grphc nvls b/c of the great shots they use; began reading them & b4 long, got more into the storytellg/art than the filmmaking; stopped film making, focused on doing comic book art instead. Used to read a comic here & there when younger but stopped; a yr ago & started again by borrowing all the generic Xmen/spiderman/batman/punisher TPB's from libraries but got tired of cookie cutter storylines; looked into first second books & top shelf & now I love 0:1 books - always nice to read a happy story once in a while. Now will read Image, Vertigo, Dark Horse, IDW over the big 2;

message 333: by Stephen (last edited Oct 26, 2012 06:58AM) (new)

Stephen Henning (henningopolis) | 6 comments Hi I'm Steve, from the UK. I've been reading comics all my life, I'm not sure when they morphed into graphic novels.

I guess the first graphic novel I read was Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. Which in some ways is a shame, because I'm not sure I've read one better than that since then.

I really like the Loeb/Millar Batman collaborations and I was really impressed by Superman: Red Son.

I love Superman, but I've always thought it's really hard to make him interesting and dramatic, given that he's so powerful (the age-old problem).

Anyway. I'll stop burbling now.

message 334: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Henning (henningopolis) | 6 comments Funnily enough, I always thinks Supes works much better when paired up with/against Batman. We still need that in a film.... Perhaps the success of the Avengers will prompt that fanboy favourite.

message 335: by Jessie (new)

Jessie Radford (ladysdeath) Stephen wrote: "Funnily enough, I always thinks Supes works much better when paired up with/against Batman. We still need that in a film.... Perhaps the success of the Avengers will prompt that fanboy favourite."

hehe i still remember the batman superman public enemy movie, when superman told Lex luther "killed my best friend" didn't exactly match up to the comic book, i don't think alot of readers mind it as much as i do

I’m Camouflage – the Detroit Famous Abstract Artist. I like Abstract Art...and graphics.

message 340: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (xitomatl) Hi everybody - I'm Kelly, currently housed up on Vancouver Island in BC. My current favourite serials are Sweet Tooth, Fatale, and Saga (there are others on my pull list at my comic book store, but these are by far my current favourites).

I don't really do the super heroes, although if I had to choose, I'm a DC fan over Marvel. I prefer monthlies to trades, and I refer to all formats as "comics".

I've been reading comics since an early teen, and in the interest of not revealing my age, I won't say how long that's been, but I will say that's in the double digits ;).

Hi everyone!

message 341: by Mike (new)

Mike Hi all!

My name is Mike and I've been a comics fan since I was four years old and I was given a comic collection by one of my mom's friends younger brothers. This started me on my own comic collecting journey- well, that and when I was little, the original "Star Wars" and its sequels were released, so those comics were bought for or given to me- which really took off in junior high when I became an Uncanny X Men fan.

If there is a series I like, I'll buy omnibus collections over single issues these days, but I do still love browsing and buying single issues when I can. I also refer to all formats as "comics" most of the time.

message 342: by Emily (new)

Emily I'm Emily, a teacher-librarian from Toronto. I joined this group because I want to learn more about graphic novels; I've read and enjoyed a few, but would like to delve deeper. I know a fair bit about kid's graphic novels and comics, since I have bought a bunch for my school library over the last few years.....and I always read them. Unless of course they're too popular with the kids and then even I have to go on the waiting list (I'm looking at you, Amulet #5).

Anyway, nice to meet you all, and I'm excited to explore.

message 345: by Adriana (new)

Adriana Zapata Hi All!
I'm Adriana, from Colombia but currently living in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I'm really new in all this graphic novels stuff, I haven't read more than 20 GN books in my life. My favorite book is Persepolis for many reasons; it was the 1st GN I've read, It's full of wisdom, humor and drama, knowledge and Marjane Satrapi's has this amazing way to tell a story that simply I find mesmerizing and convincing. I love Watchmen and V for vendetta, they're my favorites as well. Currently I'm reading Scott Pilgrim's book.
As you may noticed, English it's not my native language, so I apologize in advance.

message 347: by Andy (new)

Andy (andywolverton) Hello - Andy from Maryland here... I read just about any graphic novels, but have not tried Manga yet. I didn't have to go to work today (I'm a librarian.) due to Hurricane Sandy, so I had time to finish two graphic novels Strange Suspense: The Steve Ditko Archives Vol. 1, The Manhattan Projects, Vol. 1 and a related book, Do the Gods Wear Capes? by Ben Saunders. About to start DC Showcase Presents The Spectre and maybe a couple of others. Looking forward to this group!
