Introduction: Newbies say hello and introduce yourself here

I've been collecting comics for the past 3 years. I was a huge fan of the Big Two but starting early of this year I've ventured out to Image, Valiant and Vertigo. Have to say that I love almost all of my comics equally although I tend to favour waaaay too much towards Green Lantern and its EU haha XD

Hello and welcome Ariff, I don't think it's wise to just stay within the Big 2, if we want to the comics industry to stay we also need to venture out and read books from the other publishers. Also, different imprints offer different sets of styles of books, so we win in the end.
Hi Animal, is the book digital?
Hi J, welcome to the group. Good luck with your new graphic novel.
Hi and welcome Nadir. Check out our monthly reading discussions for the latest and the best. I think at this point our most prominent writers have retired or taken a hiatus and we're seeing newer names take on their thrones. I really like Mark Millar and Brian Vaughan. On the manga side of the fence, you can't go wrong with Naoki Urusawa and Kiyohiko Azuma.

Have you ever tried reading manga? I think you'll enjoy slice-of-life works.

Admittedly, it took a while to warm to my first taste of the graphic novel with MAUS, but once I was in about 30+ pages I was hooked. I suppose I'm looking for that experience again.
Thanks again!

However, I'm trying to make up for lost time now, and I believe that a graphic novel is a very powerful way of narrating a story. :)
Batman is definitely a firm favourite, and I also like The Walking Dead. Apart from these, I'm exploring Joe Sacco's work and am in awe of it. Looking forward to lots of great recommendations from this group.

My name's J.M. Matthews, and I recently published a very black and white, very small press...
....very anti-fundamentalist comic, titled End Times (One Shot).

I've been reading comics and graphic novels 20+ years, seen plenty of changes (good and bad).
Favourite character is John Constantine (before he zapped into the DC universe!) and my favourite imprint is Vertigo. Do have a soft spot for Groo though!
Favourite traditional heroes are Green Arrow (the Grell version), Hulk and Dredd. Best novel I've read in last 12 months is Maus.
Live in the Redlands, Australia; originally from Liverpool. Not that easy to keep up to date out here but try my best

Aron from UK Hertfordshire, been reading Graphic novels since the Sandman blew my mind out my backside in a library. Thankfully they let me stay and I've been reading graphic novels since, recent reads I enjoyed, Transmetropolitan and Berserk.

My name is Stephen, I'm from the suburbs of Chicago. I've just recently gotten into reading graphic novels. I first got interested in them when Watchmen was coming out, and I simply wanted to beat my brother to the punch and say I read the graphic novel first before the movie came out. Since then I've been inspired from movies, media, and games to delve more into graphic novels and am currently on a DC binge. Just finished a few Batman stories (Long halloween and Year one), some Superman (For All Seasons and All-Stare vol. 1). I also read half of Astonishing X-men which I loved (I need the second half still) and volumes 1 and 2 of Saga. I've got Batman: Dark Victory and Y: The last man coming up next. As far as the superhero universe goes, I like Superman the most, but I think Batman's stories have been written better. Anyways, I'm excited to get into this completely new literature!

My name's Sam, I live in south east London and I've really just got back on a kick of reading graphic novels. I'm a longtime fan of the genre, but had just fallen out of the habit for a little while, not for any good reason, nor a bad one, but I'm making a concerted effort this year to get back into it and to finish writing the graphic novel I was working on a couple of years back but which fell by the wayside amidst impending marriage, house-buying and various other things adults have to do. But I've re-embraced in a big way and purchased a pile of new ones to read. I generally veer between indie (meaning non-Marvel and DC mostly) comics, though I am dipping a toe into the new Hawkeye series by Matt Fraction. I'm a big fan of graphic memoir (Alison Bechdel, Guy Delisle etc.) and just tend to gravitate to anything I hear is great. Hopefully I'll get a good dose of awesome recommendations from what appears a pretty knowledgeable group here, and I hope I can reciprocate and participate as much as possible.

Maybe you will like these.

My name is Sunni and I love to read graphic novels. I especially love x-men and star wars.

I've been reading graphic novels/collected edition comics casually for almost a decade, although I've gotten really into current/ongoing comics the past two years.
Some comic book/gn favorites: Bone, Locke and Key, Asterios Polyp, Daredevil: The Man Without Fear by Frank Miller, Batman: Year 100, and anything Brian K. Vaughan.
I'm a little obsessed with comics, and want to expose myself to as much comic book greatness as I can! I also started a small GoodReads group called The Nerd Uprising for those who want to stack their months with even more group comic book reading!

My name is George and I'm just starting out on reading graphic novels. I read Watchmen which became my fav book instantly and led me to read Sin City and Wanted. Definitely looking for more reading material!

Well, first thing's first, I think I'm still very much a newbie in this whole comic/graphic novel area. The first one I really liked was Azzarello's Lex Luthor: Man of Steel which I read a couple years ago (I loved that the action in the comic is minimal, and you're just there exploring the reasons of Lex's hate towards Superman and you can't avoid agreeing a bit with him), but it was only until last quarter of the past year that I started jumping in more heavily into the medium (and outside Marvel/DC superhero ones).
It's great to see you are currently reading what I've seen is the best rated of Azzarello's work, and I'm quite sure I'll enjoy reading/talking about this and other stuff with everyone.
Cheers!

the best reads i've had lately are the current "hogan's alley" w/the update on elliot s! maggin and "planet of the apes: the long war" published by boom.
and the no caps habit is because of ee cummings and cat yronwode

Just bought my first one: Colder and waiting for it to arrive.

Please feel free to join all the other various discussions in the group. Have a good upcoming weekend.

I've just joined. I'm here because I'm a huge comic fan. Most of the stuff I read is collected into graphic novels, and I much prefer reading it without the adverts!
Also, I write books that I can best describe as comic books in prose form, so this seems to be a good place to hang out :)

My name is Agustin and like the rest of you I love comics. I've tried so many times to stay current, but I always fall behind. So for I'm sticking with trades and graphic novels. I've always preferred DC and Vertigo, but I'm trying to branch out so any suggestions are welcome. Couple favorites: Y: The Last Man, Preacher, and anything Batman.

P.s. I'm in NYC, let's get together for a comic geek-fest!

I love also European and independent comic.
A few years ago I started to create my comics about the history of Easter Island, because when I was a child I lived there: we have two volumes https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...).
Best regards to all!

I've been reading and loving french bandes dessinées, comic books, graphic novels, comic strips in newspapers, comic strips on the web (a lot of great stuff out there by very talented people), and all other drawn story telling from my earliest days. My first memories are of reading Jack Kirby monster comics when I was little more than a toddler. I wish I had known about the importance these would have in history and prevented my mother from throwing them away because I was scared in the dark and kept depriving them of sleep at night :-).
I was lucky enough to have a friend in university who was an avid collector of comics and re-introduced me to good english comic books. In the eighties, I lived through the beginnings of Frank Miller in Daredevil and the Dark Knight revolution, Alan Moore's astounding Swamp Thing days, the crazy Sienkiewicz New Mutants, the glory days of the Chris Claremont and John Byrne X Men and so many others. I consumed several thousand comics throughout my life and continue to this today. These days, I buy mostly collected reprints of golden age newspaper strips such as Dick Tracy but I have recently gotten back into reading a lot of newer things, biting with avidity into Chew for instance. I was on a buying hiatus for a while with a young family and budget constraints but I now have disposable income again. Yeah! I look forward to exchanging with you on the good stuff I missed and need to discover.

I'm currently reading Y the Last Man which is ok thus far and Incognito which I find to be just the perfect type of dark for me. Like Darwyn Cooke's Parker adaptations.
I suspect I will take great pleasure in some of Image's titles, Chew for example, in the future.
Furthermore, I've come to realize about myself that I'm a fan of shelf porn - these books are just so beautiful!
I enjoy Goodreads because it keeps me motivated, and I like to be able to track what I've read. I've taken fancy to this group in particular, although I haven't been contributing much. I read what you guys write though.

I'm a long time reader of graphic novels.
Recently I've gotten into fleshing out my collection a bit and trying to complete a few unfinished series I own.
I love a lot of Vertigo series, Chinese martial arts series, Japanese graphic novels, a range of other Western comics and indie comics.
My favourite has to be The Sandman by Neil Gaiman.
I'm not a massive fan of super hero comics and prefer strong consistent character development that can sometimes be lacking from the genre.
I'm generally open to most things though as long as they have a unique element to them

Hi Bernardita, Pierre, Johan, Jodie, and Wjkb. Welcome to the group. Enjoy your stay here and please note there are 2 book discussions currently going on for this month of February, and there are 2 book discussions starting in March. Also, the thread has been created for the April book discussion suggestion, please visit the thread and post your suggestion for April. Also, please feel free to join all the other various discussions in the group. Have a good evening.

Oh right! About me; I'm a 17-year-old girl from California who attends an art school for creative writing. I love reading but have never expanded into graphic novels, something I am trying to rectify now. I love all genres, really. All of them. When I have time, I will devour books faster than I do potato chips. I really like owning books... especially pretty ones. So I guess you can expect quite a few graphic novels to make it onto my shelf.
And yeah--that's it!

From a beginner to a beginner, the truth is that a couple of months ago my graphic novel experience was Persepolis and little more. Somehow I attended a talk at school by some cartoonists and started reading more. Read Epileptic, Blankets, Stitches, Ghost world... I recommend all of those I've mentioned. What I did, and maybe works for you too, is follow some of the Goodreads lists on graphic novels... they have great suggestions... (and easy links to the plot)

and many more...

Thanks! I have been looking at lists, but since I'm very busy, I don't like to waste my time on bad books--that means that whatever book I choose, I have to be sure that it is good. That's hard to figure out when ever book has such mixed reviews, and I don't have any friends that are devoted enough to graphic novels to give me recommendations (since they usually know the right books for me). I guess I was hoping that in a group everyone here probably knows their graphic novels pretty well. However, I will of course take a look at all of the books you recommended, as I've seen a lot of their names in my search for a good graphic novel! Thanks again :)

Well ultimately every person is different and someone may like a "great" Graphic Novel and another person hate it. That will happen with the lists, and also for recommendations.
I loved all those books I mentioned, but I have to say that I am a lot into Memoirs. Those are the ones I enjoy the most... But for example Black Hole seems to be a classic here but I didn't like it that much... Well, take a look at some that people have suggested to you and then share your opinions with us, maybe we can help you more once we know what kind of graphic novel you enjoy. :)

Alright, sounds good!

I'm now totally hooked, and having a hard time restraining myself from spending way too much money. I just finished Asterios Polyp (which I loved), am now working my way through Sandman, and I am collecting a sizable pile of "up next" books. I'm glad I decided to give them a fair shot.
I look forward to spending time with this group, and participating in discussions and group reads. Cheers!

"George Sprott is also good, just not quite up there with WG in my opinion.
I would suggest "Palookaville" but it is a long time running and has years between issues.
May I also suggest two friends of Seth - Chester Brown and Joe Matt. Chester wrote a book a year or so ago about prostitution and being a john in Canada. Joe Matt did a great book about 15 years ago that may or may not be in print called "Peepshow". It is vulgar and very self-depricating but hilarioius. Both have written very serious books as well that are great.
