Discussion - Have I read this genre and what did I think of this book/author?
Unlawful Contact by Pamela Clare - I love romantic suspense! It seems some of the best book I have read this year fall into this category. This is the third book in Pamela Clare's I-Team series, I read the first two earlier this year and I have to ask myself why did I wait so long to get back to this series!?! Ms. Clare is an amazing author, she moves me so deeply with her writing! So many things that happened in this book would have been wrong if handled differently - they even felt wrong in this book, but in the end I was able to excuse them. There were so many levels of gray in this book; good guys doing bad for all the right reasons, bad guys who looked like good guys... An awesome love story with a wonderful ending. I loved it! *5 Stars*
That Perfect Someone by Johanna Lindsey - Johanna Lindsey wrote the book that hooked me on romance after having just started reading again after stopping while my kids were young, so I have a real soft spot for her books. That said, some of her recent books haven't always lived up to my memories. I'm happy to say this one did! I really enjoyed this book, it was sweet and funny. But don't read it thinking you are going to be reading a book about one of the Malorys - several of them are in it, even somewhat prominently, but neither the hero or the heroine is related in any way no matter how distant. I liked it anyway. =)
Mennonite in a Little Black Dress by Rhoda Janzen - I don't often read this genre, but I really enjoyed this one! I liked reading about the author's journey from a rather low point in her life, her husband of 15 years left her for "a guy named Bob from gay.com" and recovering from a serious car accident, back home to her roots. She had to come to terms with her choices and even her prejudices. It was enlightening and thought provoking. It was also laugh out loud funny. The author's humor was ever present, even while addressing the destruction of her marriage. I found that admirable. I listened to the audio version and thought that the book was well suited for that and the narrator, Hillary Huber, was also quite good.

I've had my eye on Mennonite, now you've convinced me to give it a try. Audiobook sounds like a great idea. I've also never read Johanna Lindsey! I have to give her a try too.

You've never read Johanna LIndsey?! I thought everyone had read at least one of her books! Someone gave me Man of My Dreams when I first started reading again after my kids got a little older. (I went about 10 years without reading while they were young. Probably for the best, I can get a little absorbed...) I have read romance almost exclusively since then!!

Discussion: Have you tried this genre before? What did you think about this book/author?
1. Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex- Non-fiction isn't something I typically enjoy, so I don't read much of it. However, I loved this one. I took this with me on a trip to Omaha even though I thought I might be uncomfortable reading it on the plane (but at least I'd be forced to read it since my other options would be limited). I wasn't. It was very funny though shocking in some sections. The lengths that people will go to I was surprised at the lengths some people are willing to go to. I often felt bad for the scientists, who have their research derided and their motives questioned. To all the prudes out there, lighten up this is important research. I think I will check out some of this authors other works. Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers sounds interesting.
2.Dangerous Cravings- Although I enjoy this sort of thing in real life, this is the first BDSM novel I've ever read. I found that I really empathized with Alex and I could relate to most of her thoughts and fears, as well as her occasional self disgust. I haven't looked into anything else Evangeline Anderson has written, but I almost certainly will.
3. The Replacement- I read YA novels, especially ones with a fantasy/ paranormal slant, frequently. I didn't think this one lived up to it's hype. It was supposed to be "dark". Some people had even referred to it as "horror." I didn't think it was either of those things. It was, however, entertaining. I didn't dislike it, or anything. It just wasn't what I wanted it to be. This was Brenna Yovanoff first novel. Will I read her again? Probably.
4. Slave to Sensation- I read a lot of paranormal romance, but this is my first time reading anything by Nalini Singh. I loved this story and I am looking forward to reading more of this series! I thought the three different races was very interesting. But I expected to see more of the shifters in their animal forms. Perhaps that'll get explored later in the series.

Discussion:
GLBT:Hot Head is the first book I've read on this genre. I loved the 9/11 backstory, the vulnerability of Griff and the relationship between him and Dante before they got together. The sex scenes were detailed but not overtly explicit. The dialogue between Griff and Dante, their relationship and their chemistry was palpable from the beginning and very believable. I can say that I was surprised by this book, in a very nice way. Might read others in the genre.
Suspense OR Mystery:Trace of Fever is the second book on the Man Who Walk the Edge of Honor Series. I read the first book of the series and picked this one because I really liked the first one. However, I found that although it has great plot, characters and dialogue, it lacked mystery. Maybe that's because I had already read When You Dare which has the same human traficking backstory. I loved the banter between Trace and Priss, the sexual tension and the action, but throughout the story I felt like I'd already solved the mistery. All in all, a great romance.
Erotic OR BDSM: Trinity is the first book I read in this genre. I chose it because I love shifters. Now, having read so many books on shifters, it was hard for me to get over the fact that both males accepted their 'mate bond' so easily. But I kept my mind open, since the challenge was the erotic aspect of the book. I love Lauren Dane, I've read her Chase Brothers and Brown Siblings series and found them amazing. But this book, I just couldn't do it. Yes, there was the threesome but I felt the scenes were lacking, the dialogue sometimes amusing and sometimes boring. What helped me finish it was the fact that the plot had its merits and I wanted to see how it played out, only to have it end so blah.
I would gladly accept recommendations on this genre for the fulfillment on the challenge. I am interested in the genre, guess this book just fell short in so many aspects that I feel the need to read another.

I'm sorry you didn't like it, but thanks for letting us know why. If you completed the book, and it sounds like you did, then you completed the erotica/bdsm genre for this challenge. Sharing your thoughts on the book is the only requirement.
If you would like to give Erotica and/or BDSM another shot just for yourself, feel free to check out my "spicy" shelf. I've got a bunch of kindle lendables on there if you would like to borrow anything :)

Fantasy:The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting.Finished 8/2 (3*) I have read Fantasy before but this author is new to me. There were some things about this book I really enjoyed and others that I didn't. I liked Violet's special ability, how it was described and how her family dealt with it. But Violet made some foolish choices that distracted me a bit from the story line. There was also a very sweet friends-to-lovers storyline that was done well (except for the slightly annoying "make you jealous by using others" trick). I can't put my finger on it, but I didn't enjoy the author's voice as much as other YA Fantasy/Paranormal that I have read in the past. I was also surprised that for a YA, we were inside the mind of the killer as well as Violet. I'm not sure if I will continue with the series, but I will definitely continue with the genre.
Mystery: And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie-8/5 (5*) I have read very little mystery in the past, practically none. I have never read Agatha Christie. I LOVED this book! I couldn't put it down, it was so well done. I feel like I found a new genre and a new author from this read. It was suspenseful and thought-provoking without being gory or scary. A great read!
Memoir: I read A Jew Grows in Brooklyn: The Curious Reflections of a First-Generation American by Jake Ehrenreich(3.5*) 8/13/11. I have read a few Memoirs but have not read anything by this author before. This is a memoir of the author's life, growing up in Brooklyn the son of Holocaust survivor parents, his musician years and his years as a parent. He has a Broadway show by the same name as the title of the book and he decided to put his show on paper. I enjoyed reading about his childhood and his close and loving relationship with his father later on in their lives. He is very humorous and the book is filled with funny as well as touching moments of his life. Overall this book felt like a love letter to his dad and I teared up many times as he was recounting his relationship with him. I enjoy reading the memoir genre on occasion and I will definitely continue reading it.

You've never read Johanna LIndsey?! I thought everyone had read at least one of her books! Someone gave me [book..."
I listened to my first Johanna Lindsey this year... I didn't love the one I read (the h was a bit TSTL), but will try her again sometime.

Discussion
1. Read Summer Secrets. This is my second Barbara Freethy book. I still haven't quite decided what I think. I liked this book but it also annoyed me. The plot revolves around 3 sisters and a big family secret that is basically destroying them and their family. That part feels very contrived. So many simple solutions are avoided as they try to maintain the "big" secret. However, I like her writing style and the story does keep you engaged. There is romance, but little sex.
2. Material Girl After I started this book I realized that I had already read this one a while ago. This happens to me alot when they change the cover. I will have to pick something else if that's okay. I have read alot of Julia London's regency's but this was her first contemporary I read and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I prefer her historical novels more, however. I would like to finish the trilogy however. I like contemporary novels but it is definitely not my favorite genre. I get bored with it easily.
3.Rode Hard, Put Up WetThis is my second book by Lorelei James. I probably won't finish the series. Erotic novels are fun once in awhile but I get bored with them as well. At least Ms. James does have a story along with all the sex but I'm just not crazy about cowboys. This story had two relationships as it's main focus and overall the author handled this well. They younger couple were more interesting and I liked the development of their relationship.
4. Baltimore Blues This is the first book I have read by this author. I used to read alot of straight up mystery and suspense but stopped after awhile. I wasn't sure about this book. But I have to say that I really enjoyed it and will read more books. This is the first in a series about Tess Monahan, a former reporter for a Baltimore newspaper. She is a really interesting character and I really enjoyed getting to know her. You could feel her development as you read. I liked the people around her and I loved that Baltimore was almost like another person in the story. The murder mystery was solid and I did not guess where it was going. I still prefer a little more romance in my stories, but this was still good.

I loved the book! But maybe she should have told him a bit earlier about the baby! I didn't like it when he told her I can't love you or his son! And he changed his mind in a couple of hours, maybe even less than that! But other than that I really did enjoy the book. :)

The author's humor was ever present, even while addressing the destruction of her marriage. I found that admirable. I listened to the audio version and thought that the book was well suited for that and the narrator, Hillary Huber, was also quite good.
Sweet Surrender by Maya Banks - Yeppers, I do like some smut in my romance on occasion! No comment on how frequent that occasion is... But to like it I do require a story and characters I like. This book had both. =) I was a little surprised at how sweet it was (yes, even with Sweet in the title), so that was an added plus. I have only read Maya Banks' Romantic Suspense before and loved them, but had heard that her erotica wasn't as good so I didn't know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised - that is always a good thing!

I thought the second Sweet book was even better than the first- I think you will enjoy the whole series. I have only read the first three, and really enjoyed them.

I think you like her later book, better than her earlier ones. I have read many by her, but her older titles are iffy to me.LOL
It may be because she's now more immerse herself in the lifestyle....

I thought the second Sweet book was even better than the first- I think you will enjoy the whole series. I have only read the first three, and really enjoyed them."
As much as i loved many things about the 2nd book, the heroine made the book less than perfect with her behavior at the beginning. It's one of my niggles when reading BDSM books though, so i can see why some people may find nothing wrong with her.
The other two that followed had minor WTFs moments, and a few mental slaps in my part towards a character or other...but overall i really enjoyed them. Take into account that my issues are more character personality related, than comfort level.LOL

Want to do read the 5th book together and do a drinking game? I need to read it, but keep putting it off for some reason. I have it on my list this time though.

Oh gosh, try the hallmark channel next time. I bet you won't last an hour!

Contemporary: Sawyer I have tried this genre before. I really liked this book. The characters were all a bunch of fun and really pulled me into the story. It was the first of a series of books and I went on to read the rest.
Erotic or BDSM: Sweet Persuasion This was my first exposure to this genre. This is the second book in a series and after reading a couple of reviews, I decided to read Sweet Surrender before this one. I'm really glad I did. I feel like it helped me 'get my feet wet' if you know what I mean. I'm used to reading contemporary chick lit so this was quite a bit different for me. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I actually enjoyed reading the book. There were a couple of scenes in the story that were uncomfortable to read, but they didn't detract from the story; instead they made it more real or whole somehow. I'm not sure I would read a BDSM without the romance aspect to the story. Now that I've read 2 books of this series, I intend to finish the rest.

Have I tried this genre before?
PNR is great escapism for me - I'm totally committed to an HEA ending, and these always deliver. Plus I know the 'action' events can't ever take place, so I don't fret about the possibility! Hence you have one of my absolute favourite genres ;)
Christine Feehan is a regular read for me. I love her Carpathian series. This leopard series is a bit more hit and miss...
What did you think of this book/author?
Well - I love the author, so I won't dwell on that... This book wasn't as good as her normal fare. The previous book Burning Wild is terrific - that was a solid 5 stars for me. This next book just didn't have the connection between the H/h that I expected - only 3 stars. Some great action, but I have to admit that I skimmed some of the lurve scenes (CF can drag those out) and in the end, the book was good for a light read but no more.

Progress: 12/14
I changed my world lit/international selection after reading the first few chapters of Reading Lolita in Tehran. It went much too slowly for me, and wasn't quite what I'd expected. I've instead switched to Memoirs of a Geisha, which is progressing much better for me.

Discussion
1. The Mistress of Hanover Square: I've never read this author before, but I have read a ton of historical romances - they're my favorite. The book was okay, with some suspense, but I wasn't convinced that the hero actually cared about the heroine when they were together. Each of them seemed to be concerned about different things, and despite having been engaged before, the heroine doubted the hero throughout the book. The suspense element was good, but the romance could have been a bit more convincing.
2. Mended Hearts: I don't usually read inspirational or religious romances because, for me, they lack a lot of what makes a romance seem real (spontaneous affection, for instance). I'm also not particularly religious, so the focus on mainstream religion isn't my thing. I thought the story in this was pretty good, but the strong focus on religion was, for me, completely unnecessary in a lot of places. The romance story was a bit weak, but the character development was very good and, mostly, believable. I don't know that I'll be picking up another inspirational romance soon, but it was an interesting change from what I usually read.
3. Swept Off Her Stilettos: This was my contemporary pick. I read more historicals than contemporary, but this book really drew me in. It's one of my favorites that I've read recently, and I'd definitely try this author again. I loved the heroine and really got to know and understand her through the first-person narration. Reading this book has made me want to try out more contemporary stories, so I consider it a success.
4. The Cinderella Pact: I read this as my chick-lit pick. I've read chick-lit before, and I usually like it, though I prefer traditional romance most of the time. I'd never read this author before this, but I think I'd definitely try her again. I liked the book in the end, though initially I was a bit turned off by the weight loss theme being central to the story. I thought the author did a great job of making the characters real and moving beyond just losing weight. Overall, this was a good pick.
5. Single White Vampire: I've read this genre and this author often before, and I loved this book just as much as the last ones. This is one of my favorite vampire romance series, though it's hard to say why. I was hooked on this book from the start. The hero was funny without him meaning to be, and the heroine was a perfect match for him. I'll definitely read the rest of this series (but probably not in the right order).
6. Memoirs of a Geisha: I haven't read much of this genre, and I'd never read anything by this author. I saw this movie when it came out years ago, but I didn't get around to reading the book until now. I loved the detail in the writing and the story, but Sayuri's obsession with the Chairman frustrated me. She didn't grow much as a character and stayed very childlike in her aspirations throughout. I liked the book generally, but I would have liked it much more if she'd moved on and learned to be happy without him.
7. The Book Thief: I loved this book. I've read a lot of historical and young adult fiction, but never this author. It didn't have a happy ending (mostly), but it was really unique and well-written. I loved the perspective and that there wasn't a lot of artificial happiness put in. I'd definitely try other things by this author.
8. The Perfect Murder: I was actually really impressed with this book. I've never read anything by Brenda Novak before, but I have read quite a lot in the thriller/suspense/mystery genres, though not a lot of romantic thrillers. The heroine was very real and such a strong woman, and the hero was someone I could easily see her with. I stayed interested through the whole book, which is unusual since it tends to be easy to guess what's going to happen next. I'll definitely read more by her.
9. The Realm of Possibility: This was my GLBT book. I've never read any GLBT books before, nor had I read this author. Having read it, I don't think I'll be reading much in this genre again, as it's hard for me to relate to the relationships, which have their own unique struggles that aren't typically in romances. The style of the book also wasn't my favorite, as it was very fragmented, and you didn't get anyone's full story, but rather snippets of several stories. It wasn't the GLBT elements in this one that I didn't like, but the style, which was a variety of poems, song lyrics, and snippets of prose. I'm still not sure I'll come back to this genre again, though, and will most likely stay away from this author as well.
10. Animal Farm: I read 1984 in high school and enjoyed Orwell's writing then, but never got around to reading Animal Farm. I really liked the book and seeing the rapid progression from "We are all equal" to Napoleon's tyranny. I guess I liked that I could see history through the eyes of these animals, and I probably enjoyed that most since my historical interests generally lie with Russia/Soviet Union. I could see the revolution happening on the smaller scale and relate it to what actually happened, and I think Orwell did a great job of breaking down the history and putting it into this format.
11. The Dirty Life: I had never read anything from this author before, though I had read memoirs. This was an interesting book about changing your life drastically (from Manhattanite to rural farmer), and about the challenges in building a farm based on old-style techniques. Kimball's descriptions made me sure I could never be a farmer, but I have a ton of respect for anyone who does that kind of work.
12. Enchanted: I think the nicest thing I can say about this book was that there were some parts that were almost tolerable. To be fair, I'm not a huge fan of erotica, but these stories were a little weird, and I expect most erotica doesn't deal with so many different fetishes all in one book. I'm also not a big fan of fetishes, so this was the complete wrong book for me. A few of the stories were okay, but not good enough to make me try anything else by this author.

Hi Dee, I have other friends who also really like this series. I will be happy to try the 3rd. I like her writing okay, but I'm still not sure about western romances, erotic or otherwise. I have now tried several authors and still am not crazy about them. That's actually the biggest obstacle for me with this series.

Discussion
1. The Body Finder - It was quite different from what I expected when I read the blurb. The friends-to-lovers portion of the H/h was quite well done. The author managed to avoid (for the most part) the big misunderstanding. But the heroine did tend to have some almost-TSTL moments. The story line and way the parents and the family seem acceptive of the heroine's gift was a nice touch. All in a all, a nice absorbing and a pleasant read.
2. Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah - I've only read one women's fiction - Good in Bed which I didn't like. So I was a bit apprehensive when I started this book. I am happy to say that I loved this book. I loved the character and friendship theme that was prevalent in the book. I cried at the end too. I'll most likely check out the author's other books as well.
3. Silk Is for Seduction by Loretta Chase - I used to read historic and regency romance almost exclusively last year and burnt myself out. BUT Loretta Chase still remains one of the few authors who can make me read the genre again. I loved the main characters, I loved the way they fell in love. And I could suspend disbelief enough to accept the ending. And this book entertained me well enough during the 4 hours flight trip. Needless to say, I will definitely be picking up the next book by this author.
4. Grave Witch by Kalayna Price - A bit of cheating since I read this book last year when it came out due to the unique premise. I wanted to read it again before reading its sequel ( I hate this 1 year waits between books in a series). My impressions remains the same from the first time I read it. Death personnified makes me scoff a bit but Alex is a compelling character and thus, makes the read very enjoyable. The world building is good and at the end you are left wanting more. Also, there seems to be a love triangle but that is secondary to Alex.
5. The Bay At Midnight by Diane Chamberlain - This is the first time I'm trying out this author. I was intrigued by the story line. The book has alternating POV from 3 different characters as they narrate a childhood horror. My heart broke for Maria and Julie as they each talk about their childhood and how they tried to survive the tragedy. But it is also about love and forgiveness. It has a 50+ lead characters finding love again. I felt the mystery was a bit lacking as I could guess the whodunnit at nearly the three-quarters point. But I would recommend this book for anyone willling to try out a neat mystery.

5. PNR: Kiss of Midnight by Lara Adrian - I love PNR. It is pretty much my main genre. I love LOTU and Night Huntress. This book is a combination of the two. So, yeah, I love this series too. A lot of people compared it to BDB series. Well, I have not read them yet but I take there words for it.:) This is my first book of this author. And I'm really looking forward to reading the next book.

Discussion: Have I read this genre and what did I think of this book/author?
1. Dare to Surrender by Lilli Feisty: This is the first BDSM novel that I have read. But, I've read other books with a scene or two in them. I wasn't really impressed with this book. I blame Feisty. Her writing left a lot to be desired and the plot wasn't terribly entertaining. I think it might even rate lower than a "meh."

6. An Unforgettable Lady by Jessica Bird - Jessica Bird is alternate name of J.R. Ward. I don't seem to love BDB series as much as the others since I can't go past book #4 (I think). But this book is labelled as a romantic-suspense which I will read any time. The chemistry between the lead characters was burning off the pages. The heroine is strong, rich and sexy and her character growth was what made this book awesome for me. Though, at one point, I just wanted to shout at the male lead - enough already! Just go and do it. The male lead also tended to alpha-hole territory but he groveled just enough to make me forgive me. Hmm, maybe Grace should have let him grovel a bit more at the end...?

Wan "Artemis",
I've started Kiss Of Midnight three times already, and can't seem to get into it. I should really keep going one of these days, I've only read about 30 pages or so. I love the BDB, one of the only series I have to read as soon as it comes out, and own a paper copy of.

Vi,
Wow! You are speeding through the genres! An Unforgettable Lady sounds good, I've never read anything by JR Ward as Jessica Bird.

I started that one not long ago, but had to put it on pause. I really loved the author's other works, so it took me a while to figure out why i was not getting into this one. I just can't seem to relate to characters older than in their 40s.

I'm in the same boat, and i haven't even been able to do an update.

Hi Fran -- It's a little slow then it picked up - that's totally understandable tho. I have tried
The Iron King but couldn't get into it. After about 4th chapter, I stopped. That was the 2nd book I stopped reading this year. The first one was Splendor. I ened up gave away the whole Luxe series to my friends' teenage daughter. LOL.

EROTIC OR BDSM: DARE TO DOMINATE BY CLAIRE THOMPSON: this genre is not new to me, And i have read couple of books by claire, and she is proving by each book that she is a really talented author.... and i personally loved in this book, how she transformed a mere fantasy to a daily-routine, way-of life , and how she viewed the new light this D/s relationship was like with the missing piece which was Love. also how she made him develop his true self -dom. self- with her help, and how he helped her with her fear, with their love, and patience... i certainly will read this genre from time to time. -Definitely 5 stars-
