Quarter 1: Daring Explorers Forge Great Horizons In Literature
January 1 - March 31, 2025

With 26 diverse tasks to complete, one for each letter of the alphabet, you'll have the opportunity to explore a wide range of genres and perspectives. Let your curiosity be your guide as you set sail on this exciting expedition through the world of books!

Challenge Rules:
📚 Standard Challenge Rules are SUSPENDED for this challenge.
This means you have more flexibility in choosing books to fulfill the prompts, including shorter page counts, graphic novels, etc. HOWEVER, be aware that if you use a book in this challenge that doesn't meet the Standard Challenge Rules, you won't be able to use that same book for other group challenges that do require adherence to the Standard Challenge Rules.
🔖 Each book can only be used ONCE within this challenge, even if it fits multiple prompts.
🎨 You are encouraged to interpret the prompts creatively, but your interpretation should be reasonable and justifiable.
📖 There are no restrictions on book format (e-book, audiobook, physical book). For example, for the task "Audiobook narrated by the author", you don't have to listen to the audiobook for the book to qualify, it just needs to be a book whose author narrated the audiobook edition.
🗓️ You may complete the prompts in any order within each quarter.

Optional Challenge Booster:
🔤 Alliterative Adventure: For an extra challenge, try to complete each task using a book whose title begins with the same letter as the task. For example:
• "Adventure novel set in an unexplored land," read Amazon Adventure
• "Biography of a famous explorer or pioneer," read Barrow's Boys
• "Classic novel published before 1900," read Crime and Punishment
This is entirely optional and can be applied to as many or as few prompts as you like!

Tasks:

A book with artificial intelligence or automation
Biography of a person born in the same month as you
Classic novel published before 1900
Dystopian fiction set in the near future
Epic fantasy with extensive world-building
First-person narrative
Graphic novel adapted from a classic work
Historical fiction set in a century you haven't read about before
If you have read a book in every century, either choose:
• A book set around a lesser known historical event -or-
• A book set in a century you've read the LEAST
Investigative non-fiction exposé on a contemporary issue
Japanese literature in translation
Kindle Single or short novella
Literary fiction with an experimental structure
Memoir of a musician or composer
Nonfiction book about a natural disaster
Own voices novel from an underrepresented perspective
Poetry collection by a poet laureate
Queer literature or LGBTQ+ themed book
Retelling of a Shakespeare play
Science fiction exploring space colonization
Thriller set in a small town
Urban fantasy featuring supernatural creatures
Victorian era mystery

Just a heads up - since I've had a question about it.... for:

Historical fiction set in a century you haven't read about before

If you have read a book in every century, either choose:
A book set around a lesser known historical event -or-
A book set in a century you've read the LEAST

Ashely,
For Literary fiction with an experimental structure, do you have any suggestions of what would be considered "experimental structure"? (I don't mean book titles, necessarily, but more what structures you would consider as experimental).

I'm about to Google that phrase and see if I can find any books that way, but thought I'd also pick your brain since you designed the challenge :)

eta: I googled. Okay, so I'm reading a book that has podcast clips and journalistic commentary alongside an ongoing mystery, so I think that would fit the task quite well.

Found this list of books and a lot of them sound really cool

I think you've got it, but I'll respond in case anyone else is curious!

In a nutshell, works that deliberately deviate from traditional narrative conventions and storytelling techniques. So...

Unconventional Narrative Structure: Experimental literary fiction often abandons linear storytelling in favor of non-linear, fragmented, or circular narratives.

Innovative Use of Language: Authors may play with language, syntax, and grammar in unusual ways, e.g. stream-of-consciousness style and invented words that blend multiple languages.

Mixed Media and Visual Elements: Some experimental works incorporate visual elements, typography, or other media alongside the text. Mark Z. Danielewski's "House of Leaves" uses unconventional page layouts, fonts, and colors to enhance the narrative.

Metafiction: Many experimental works are self-referential, drawing attention to their own artifice as literary constructions.

In the interest of transparency, my only experience is with Stream of Consciousness style narratives and the idea about page layout deviations. I had to do the same with researching initially to realize there are actually more than those 2! I'd never even realized that "metafiction" was a thing.

The list you found is great!

So basically - find a book that BREAKS THE RULES! :)

Thanks for the feedback, Ashley! I like that breakdown of the different types that would qualify.

This challenge has inspired me to think more creatively about some of the books I choose and why I choose them. Thanks!
