Looking at your list, I ask myself why I have never heard of Anne McCaffrey's Catteni series before. One more for me to look into...

LOL! I loved the first one for years and did not realize that there were other stories until I was on GR. The problem is finding them available to read without buying them. So many of her older books are not available from the library. She wrote so many great stories! Have you read her Pern books? I also loved her Crystal Singer stories.

Thanks Almeta!

I looked over your lists, but it hurts my head. (I mean that in a nice way - I love the graphics!)
I was reminded to look over my paper copy of 1000 Books to read before you die list and update it. I am pretty sure I read a few last year.

Some of them at least 10 times. There was a time when I would re-read them every couple of years.

I know what you mean! I still go back and read some of them every once in a while.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments The Gilead story (Home) is finally starting to pick up. Jack and Glory are finally talking and some things are making sense. It felt like the first 90 pages took an eternity to get through. My least favorite thing about ebooks are that it takes 2, 3, or 4 page “swipes” to actually make it through one “actual” book page. The swipe count depends on the tablet orientation, which in my case is horizontal because of the tablet cover/holder. My previous one was vertical and I liked it better.

message 13: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments My long, long awaited audiobook hold on the Linda Wallander series story, Before the Frost Henning Mankell has become available. It is the one and only book in the “series” so although it is listed as #1 of a series, I don’t have to track it and it will not go on my list.

I started one of these a few years ago and all my good intentions came to nought! I think I was inspired by you Cherie. I'm not sure I have the energy to restart it lol Best of luck!

This is why I have set the requirement for ebook pages to be higher than print books. There's such a discrepancy. Some match closely, but others don't.

message 16: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I made it through Home this morning. I liked it but not as much as the first book in the series. I added two titles to my TBR list and looked up more words than I thought I should have needed to. I did not understand Jack but Gloria was a wonderful character.

I just purchased the next book in the series, Lila and I am starting it for the second book of my yearly challenge. I also bought the last book in the series and will read it for my third book, after I update my challenge.

message 17: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I downloaded the 7th Kurt Wallandar audiobook. (One Step Behind).
I have had it on hold for months! Unfortunately, it is two books behind where I am in the series. It is okay though. I love the Dick Hill narration!

message 18: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Oh, I love Lila!

message 19: by Cherie (last edited Jan 23, 2024 11:12AM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished Lila and am currently reading the last book in the series, Jack.

Lila was wonderful. She was such an unusual character and her internal conversations were so good. I was reminded so much of The Grapes of Wrath story as she remembered how she and Doll traveled around the country with Doane and his people looking for work and not trusting anyone. There were parts of the camps and the wind and dust and not ever owning anything except what they could carry. Doll always looking out for her and telling her never to expect anything and keep quiet and not to draw attention to herself. Then, she traveled to Iowa and ltook up temporary shelter in the shack in the field by the river and entered Ames' church to get out of the rain. Whew!

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished listening to the Kurt Wallander book and have updated the status. It was not my favorite story.

Only one more book to finish the series. The Troubled Man is the last one. I have it on hold with an 8 week wait.

message 21: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finally updated my list and moved Gilead to the series killed list. I finished Jack on Feb 1st.

I added Code Name Verity to the series started list. I am still reading it for my yearly challenge.

I killed off Nora Kelly in 2022 when it was only a 3 book series, but I can still read Dead Mountain as an orphan and use it for a link for my yearly challenge list to read after Verity, if I want. I will have to rethink the third book then, but I have plenty of time to catch it up.

message 22: by Cherie (last edited Mar 13, 2024 11:08AM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I listened to the last Kurt Wallander book, The Troubled Man but I need to make sure I have finished them all. I thought I had missed one when I looked last.

Yes! Kurt Wallander is killed off. It was a sad book and a ending to the series. I really enjoyed most of the stories, but the last three were not quite as exciting as many of the first ones.
I listened to The Dogs of Riga 2018. Many of the books stayed on hold for weeks until they were available.
I only listened to the "whole numbers", not the partials as my library did not purchase them.

message 23: by Jayme, Moderator (new)

Jayme | 4518 comments Cherie - Do you mostly read series books? I always find an interesting series when I look at your list.

message 24: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments No, Jayme, I read just about anything.
I do try to keep up with series but there are always so many other things to read. A lot of old series books are dependent on what is available from my library and the newer series books are dependent on the long wait times for holds from the same source.

I have a shelf called “1st in series to read” if you really want to see what is available for series.
The thing I feel needed is a list of series “killed”.
I am always coming across books listed as series and have to look them up to see if I have read them or not. I have a paper list of some but not all.

message 25: by Cherie (last edited Mar 20, 2024 01:21PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I started the 4th Nora Kelly book, Dead Mountain. I really can’t decide which character I like best though, Nora or Corrie. I like that Corrie gets featured into the Nora Kelly books.

I got a notice today that The Hunter (Cal Hooper #2), by Tana French was available, so I downloaded it.

The Man in the Brown Suit is waiting for me to start too.

Not a series, but the sequel to my monthly challenge read is finished too. I enjoyed Learning more about the parents of Alexandra Fuller. She has several others books published too.

message 26: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments So - let's get it straight. The Man in the Brown Suit is Agatha Christie's Colonel Race Series. I listed the titles in message 3. I have already read #3, Death on the Nile, so I only have to find the other two.

message 27: by Cherie (last edited Apr 02, 2024 03:01PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished the Daughters of Rome audiobook. It was an interesting story but hard to keep track of everything with all of the name changes. The audiobook was 13 hours long. I can use it for my yearly challenge with two links. The main characters were women and it is in a four book series. Still reading The Man in the Brown Suit, but I think I will start listening to Mistress of Rome, since it is available. Adding two more series to my list. 😊

message 28: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished listening to Mistress of Rome on March 30th but was behind in my reporting on GR. It was easier to keep track of the characters, but it was pretty graphic an gory reporting on all of the "activities" in THE GAMES. My library has the other books, so, I guess I will keep listening while I wait for others to be available.

Waiting for The Edge #2 in the 620 Man series.

message 29: by Cherie (last edited Apr 09, 2024 04:12PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I listened to three Guardians of G'Hoole series books (#7, 8, and 9) in the last week and I am currently on The Coming of Hoole, which is #10. They are short listens only 4-6 hours long and I really love listening to the narrator's voices. She even sings the little songs that go with the tales. I rediscovered them while looking for a book for my yearly challenge, but unfortunately, they are too short to fit. Several years ago, my library listings were never available, but they seem to be now.

message 30: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished reading The Hunter (#2 in Call Hooper by Tana French - only two in series). It was great and I hope she writes more books.

Maybe I can finish this series this year. I do not know when I listened to the volume which is the first 3 books (no date is entered)
but I listened to book #4 in March 2016 - eight years ago!

message 37: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I just downloaded The River of Wind onto my iPod to start listening to. It doesn't look like my library has picked up the last three books as audiobooks. Maybe they weren't recorded?
They are available as ebooks though.

message 38: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments The next two Agatha Christie, Colonel Race books are not available for at least 4 weeks.
Iron Lake is not available for 8 weeks.

I downloaded the 3rd Empress of Rome Series book by Kate Quin, Empress of the Seven Hills ebook to read along with my yearly challenge book.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished listening to The River of Wind 🎧 - Guardians of Ga'Hoole. Not my favorite story.

I finished The Edge 6:20 Man Series by David Baldacci (only two in series). Great story!

I am still reading the 3rd Empress of Rome book, Daughters of Rome. This is my favorite one so far. Short chapters and easy to lay down and pick back up.

I started a new 1st-in-series book to check out another PLAYAWAY audiobook from my library. The Thursday Murder Club has been on my list for some time and my library seems to have them available. It has had some funny lines, so far, but I am not sure I will stick with the series. Only four books in the series. Useful for no brainer crocheting though, if you do not have to count. I am making a "market bag" for my sister.

I have The Edge on hold and hopefully I'll get it in about a month.
I borrowed The Phoenix Crown yesterday. So far I like it but I've just started.
I finished reading Thursday Murder Club series. I liked it for the characters, a bunch of old folks with time on their hands getting into everyone's business. Sounds like where I live. I guess I could identify. I think my favorite was the last one #4, so I hope you continue. Sometimes you just need a "no brainer" and if it comes in a series all the better. Always something to go to.

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments I'm interested in how you'll feel about the Phoenix Crown. I picked up The Nature of Fragile Things which is also set during the San Fran earthquake.

Jannene | 3124 comments Cherie, how are you doing? I am almost caught up to you on Odd. Did you plan on killing off that series this year?

message 44: by Cherie (last edited Jul 16, 2024 03:23PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Hi Jannnene,
I should probably finish off Odd. Let me know when you are ready to read the next one - for me it is Odd Apocalypse. The last three are all available in ebook from my library. I might try to race through #4. It has been a long, long time since I read it.

I just finished the fourth Colonel Race book of Agatha Christie’s. (It was #3 but I read #4 while I was waiting for “Cards”. Declaring this series Dead July 16th

I have been shuffling between Cork O’Connor and Chief Inspector Gamache audiobooks for the last couple of months.

I just started the latest Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes book, The Lantern's Dance today. It is an orphan read. I have two other orphans waiting.
edited. It is too good. I am going to finish it before I want it to end!

message 45: by Cherie (last edited Jul 16, 2024 02:39PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I have updated the Cork O'connor list and need to update the Cheif Inspector series. I have been reading both series out of order because so many of the middle books are all on holds (inluding mine). I have posted 10 of the Cork O'Connor books but I am sure that I have finished a couple more. I finished one of the later Chief Inspector books yesterday. It was really, really good. I need to check back in my library postings. I really like it that Libby indicates when the books were returned so that I can update the GR series list. It takes me a couple of days to get through them, sometimes 3 or 4 as some are much longer.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I downloaded the 12th Chief Inspector Armond Gamache book this morning. A Great Reckoning. I have three on hold.

I am also starting Mycroft Holmes by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. This is the first in his Mycroft Holmes and Sherlock series. I have had it on my TBR list for years.
There are three books in the series.

Also is the backstory of (view spoiler) resolved in book 3? If so, I might read it sooner than later.

message 49: by Cherie (last edited Jul 17, 2024 01:13PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Hi Janice,

Yes, I listened to both books. I remember what you are asking about, but it has been too many books ago for me to be able to answer exactly for either question. It is an issue with audio books for me. I enjoy listening but minute details do not stay with me like they do when I read the stories. If I still have the print books in my back room (I have been collecting books to donate to the library) I will see if I can look up the details.

message 50: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments I'm the same way. I don't retain the minute details and sometimes I don't remember the main details. I don't remember anything about the first book except for hazy bits here and there. It's not surprising since it was 2013 when I read it.
