June | 20 comments 4🌟 Handle With Care by Jodi Picoult.
I don't know how I missed it—published 2009—fantastic mix of crucial family topics deftly handled by a master. Picoult's circumstances open your mind to think past superficial barriers and prejudices. There's NO boundaries on a child's life unless WE put them there..

Legion
Legion (The Exorcist, #2) by William Peter Blatty
William Peter Blatty

3 stars
This is the sequel to The Exorcist which I had read just before this, so I read them back to back. The first half of this book was rather slow. The entire story takes place over 8 days, from March 13 to March 20. The main character is detective William F Kinderman. He is very scatterbrained in the first half of the book and he kept thinking about all of these weird things that had nothing to do with the case at all. Like what would happen if the astronauts would find a camera on Mars. Obviously that had nothing to do with the murder of a 12 year old boy. The second half had a twist and a big surprise, but the book wasn't very interesting to me. Kinderman was just too weird for me. He also cannot use his bathtub because his wife keeps live carp in it.

Sarah B | 307 comments I just finished this creepy book that is set during October. It's a great read for Halloween.

The Wild Hunt
The Wild Hunt by Emma Seckel
Emma Seckel

4 stars
This novel features the Sluagh (sloo-ah) which are birds from Scottish myth. They look like crows. And every October they swarm this tiny island in huge numbers. And things bleed. The book is set right after World War II so the people in here are depressed. It's about broken families, choices and guilt. The plot is definitely focused on the people and emotions as well as running from the blood thirsty birds. And yes, the story extends through Halloween until the beginning of November... There is also some mystery in here that hints at secrets.

I quite enjoyed this one. I felt it was different. It's not your average "killer bird" book. It's smarter than that and has a heart.

So I have some mixed feelings about this nonfiction book. It was easy to read but I'm kind of unsure what I have learned? It's kind of "grayish". If that makes sense. It goes over the stuff about the exorcisms all right but I also felt that some of the described cases were actually medical issues. And I was surprised to learn that the people in Italy actually ask for thousands of exorcism a year! The book made me wonder why.

Summer of Night
Summer of Night by Dan Simmons
Dan Simmons
5 stars!
This is definitely one of the top horror books I have read this year. And since this is a library book I will have to get my own copy of this. But it's so very creepy. A horrible ancient menace is taking over a small rural Illinois town and only a group of kids on bikes can stop them. This moves at a good pace too. Lots of kid type adventures but also them playing detective while their friends are dying from the thing. There is some serious death count in here. And some of the scenes were so vivid I got the crazy urge to try and draw it. But I just love books that have kids as main characters. But this is no fluffy kid story. It's adult horror with guts and all. Very detailed background in here too. Highly recommend! It's set in 1960.

Pocket Bear
Pocket Bear by Katherine Applegate
Katherine Applegate

5 stars
This was a very quick relaxing story. Just the perfect thing to read after that very long horror story! It's a kid's book but great for adults as well. The main character is a cat named Zephyrina who loves to carry stuff home like socks, shoes, toys... And the humans clean up these toys and give them a Second Chance. And then one day Zeph finds an antique bear in a garbage bag. I think this book actually asks a difficult question: is it better for a stuffed animal to sit in a museum or should it go to another child but then later be outgrown and end up tossed out again??

Rachel finds out her younger sister is a witch and then she starts to scheme his to take advantage of the situation. It's a humorous high school story about a dance on stage and trying to stop a wedding. Of course nothing goes as planned. I enjoyed this. I see there are more books in this series so I will try to read those too.

Tyler | 10 comments After Ragnarok: Godless age 4.5/5 (4 in goodreads).

It’s moody but great indie book. it doesn’t hold your hand, which i appreciate. If you like grim, grounded fantasy where the world itself is a riddle… try it. if you want mainstream romancy vibes, you should skip it.

I love a good military sci-fi book mixed with political intrigue. The world- and character building in this one makes it a favourite.
