I love a good military sci-fi book mixed with political intrigue. The world- and character building in this one makes it a favourite.

I had to put in some serious effort to finish this one! The writing style is just not very easy to read - it kind of jumps around a lot. I often found my self confused about what I had just read, which is very unlike me. Only a part of this is about searching for interstellar objects. The rear of the book covers the movie Thelma and Louise.

Breathe In, Bleed Out
Breathe In, Bleed Out by Brian McAuley
Brian McAuley

5 stars!
This is a fun slasher novel inspired by movies like "scream". And to make it more fun it's set out in the dry desert 🏜️ where it's very hard to run away. And poor Hannah has mental health issues because last year her boyfriend died in a horrible camping - hiking accident. PTSD is ruining her life but her friend invites her on this trip. Unfortunately for Hannah, a killer is stalking the yoga spa! And the death count is piling up. It's a fast paced story that kept me guessing as to who the killer is.

I made a list of the stories in here as I was reading + kept some notes - so see my review if you want more exact details. But while this deals with scary subjects and it's about the most haunted town in Ontario Canada the stories often left me confused. Lots of weird stuff in here but a bit too weird. The first story about the crows was my favorite. After that they went downhill.

October Moon by Michael Scott

Rachel and her family travel to Ireland because her father bought a horse ranch. But as soon as they arrive bad stuff starts to happen. The book is more mystery - crime than horror. There are indeed werewolves in here and you the reader knows there are werewolves but Rachel doesn't. After awhile she starts to snoop like a detective. Of course it's a bad idea to snoop on werewolves! But this book explores the werewolf creation myth. It certainly is a new twist on werewolves. But don't expect a bloody action people-get-torn-apart story because this is NOT what it is. It's very PG.

It's also from before smartphones. So when you were out there alone in a field far from the house and the werewolf is coming, too bad! And yes, a scene like that is in there. You had to rely on your feet and the volume of your voice.

And this book is very clean too.

There is a large variety of stories in here including a few that certainly could be considered horror! The horror ones hidden between the drama made them even more startling. But since these were originally written in the 1930s and the early 1940s there were a few things in here I didn't understand... Minor things you know. They show people in common locations doing things and having conversations. There is even madness.

There is a lot of deep thoughts and insights in this children's book. It says it's ok to be different. It's about finding friends and about a young orphan girl who believes she is broken - she tries to find a family and to find out where she belongs. And along the way she faces danger. And meets witches, vampires and werewolves. She has to face her fears as well. A good adventure story although I did see a few minor flaws (plot holes / unanswered questions) but then I often think too much.

I had a hard time understanding what one of the main characters in here looked like. But I believe that Anatema is a blue spider with a woman's head on it - probably has mandibles around her mouth too. And she rules Capricious House. And now Dalia has to go serve her and find out what had happened to her stolen items.

Theme: to be accepted as you are.

It's just over 100 pages so a short read.

Note: this is a very unusual "romance" but it's very clean... Only a chaste kiss in here.

The plot was too easy to guess (I guess it by page 60 of a 210 page book) but it teaches lessons about standing up for yourself and to say NO. You don't have to do what bullies tell you to do. The bullies in here are mean girls who use popularity - not the kind that use fists.

The main character is very strong but I thought she had some unrealistic goals for her daughter. I did read the entire book in one sitting but it was a tad dry. It focuses too much on her business goals for my tastes.
