The Water Rituals

Eva García Sáenz de Urturi
5 stars
I actually enjoyed this book more than the first one.
I did guess the killer very early on but then there were a few other twists at the end that did surprise me..
I think part of me enjoying this one more was the fact I was now familiar with the way things work in Spain - I understood it better (while the first book was a crash course in the society / culture)..
The main character also faced a disability in here.
The killer was more human so you could understand the person better.
All of that made a better book.
But you need to read book #1 first.

COVID Days: A Poetic Memoir of A Schoolboy’s Life Through the Pandemic
I honestly don’t even know where to start. I just came across this book and it completely blew my mind. COVID Days by Methul Hettiarachchi isn’t just a memoir. It’s not just poetry. It’s a masterpiece — a raw, unfiltered, living snapshot of what life felt like during the pandemic. Every word, every pause, every space on the page is deliberate. You feel the chaos, the fear, the absurdity, the small joys, the heartbreaks, and the moments of pure human connection.
It’s like holding a piece of history in your hands — a time capsule that’s untouched, unpolished, utterly honest, and somehow so beautifully alive. The creativity, the insight, the courage to just let it all be, makes this something you cannot just read — you experience it.
And the best part? The Kindle version is currently free. I can’t recommend this enough. This is one of those books that will stay with you forever.

Bowl of Heaven

Gregory Benford & Larry Niven
5 stars
This was quite the adventure story set in deep interstellar space when the human ship, the SunSeeker, finds this huge bowl-shaped artificial structure in space. The inside is like a planet. And it's name is the Bowl of Heaven. And that is when the adventure starts, because humans being humans they of course got to go investigate it. And they run afowl of the Bird Folk. This structure is so large it boggles the mind! A thousand Earths could fit inside this thing.
Not very much suspense or thrills but plenty of action adventure. Lots of dangerous situations. There are also parts in here about society, change and even world wide weather.
I was entertained throughout.
It's the first book in a trilogy and it hints that something mysterious is waiting at their destination of the Glory system.

Trail of Lightning

Rebecca Roanhorse
4 stars
The ending of this one left me feeling very confused. The main character, Maggie, has some serious flaws (and she has magical abilities too) - she is a monster slayer who tracks down evil monsters. But she does very questionable things. I enjoyed reading this. Lots of action. Quick moving plot. But that ending!
The book is very unique as it's about the Diné (the Navajo) and tells about their monsters. This is set in a world after a huge disaster and the States is gone, most of it under water. But the reservations survive. The whole book has a very strong feel of a western with people doing what they want to do.

“I just wrapped The Art of Being Relentless by James Robbins, and I can’t stop thinking about it. It’s not your everyday self-help book — it digs deeper, pushing you to build discipline, resilience, and relentless momentum. It felt like a wake-up call. If you’re serious about growth, it’s a must-read.

The Mark of the Beast: The Continuing Story of the Spear of Destiny

Trevor Ravenscroft
3 stars
It was making these really wild claims that I just couldn't believe at all. But a good chunk of the book is about self discovery and becoming more spiritual and developing intuition. And he says that computers and the materialism is bad for that. That people lose their humanity and they grow colder + harsh. That part I can believe.
This was written way before AI but look at the messes AI is doing: people losing their jobs and all...

Goth Girl and the Ghost of a Mouse

Chris Riddell
3 stars
I had some problems with this book. Some of the things in here were too weird for me to accept and to believe. I know it's a kid's book and generally I do enjoy reading kid's books but having a bicycle race over the rooftop of a mansion really stretches it too far. Plus I feel the title is very inaccurate. Half the time the girl forgot all about the ghost mouse. How sad.

I honestly wasn't sure I was going to like this book. The first handful of chapters were a little on the -- ighhhh -- side. In the end I really did enjoy it and gave 4 stars.

The Martian Contingency

Mary Robinette Kowal
3 stars
I had wanted a good mystery but instead this was a boring drama. It was about stuff like which holidays to celebrate on Mars, how much down time do they need, etc. this stuff just couldn't hold my interest. Something big didn't happen until page 270! I was very generous with the 3 star rating.
