Brandon Allers | 13 comments "The Fox Wife." By Yangsze Choo. 5 stars. The author did a really good job at transitioning between our primary and secondary protagonists.

If you like murder mystery with a light dusting of fantasy, Motherly revenge, and pursuit you might like it too.

This is a marvelous follow up to the Gentleman's Book of Vices, and a great standalone, with cameos from Charlie and Miles. Find the full review here.

I just loved this very exciting story that takes place after the civil war as Will travels with his father to hopefully get 160 acres of free land in Oklahoma. Lots of danger. And Will learns to be a man.

The Zuzu Secret
The Zuzu Secret by Miriam Chernick
Miriam Chernick
5 stars!

This family drama is focused on 12-year-old Josie and her disabled 15-year-old brother Abe, who has Prader-Willi syndrome. Josie wants to volunteer at the vet's clinic during the summer and she has a secret pet bearded lizard, but she has to take care of her brother (who causes so much drama in the house). I was totally captivated by this middle grade novel. I read this whole book in one sitting. The lesson in here is you can't always get the things you want instantly, you have to be patient and wait. Lots of secret keeping going on in here too, which leads to problems.

That most definitely is true: they need to learn to be men. Young Will was scared but he dug deep inside to find courage and it was in part because he had a role model. So boys need an appropriate role model so they can learn. To inspire them.

Willa of Dark Hollow
Willa of Dark Hollow (Willa of the Wood) by Robert Beatty
Robert Beatty

5 stars!
This sequel was better and more powerful than the original book. It's set in the Great Smoky Mountains and is about a nature spirit named Willa who tries to save her forests from loggers. The two groups don't understand each other at all. Reading this made me misty eyed. It's historical fantasy fiction. Also a kid's book too.

Note the story is rather glum and spooky too. If you are looking for a creepy October read maybe this? Scary weird creatures in here in the woods.

This is the second book in a two book series.
The first book is Willa of the Wood

Ann Archur (annarchur) | 2 comments The book I loved most recently was Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros. It is a high-stakes romantasy: dragons, magic, war, and heartbreak. I love the themes of trust and betrayal; sacrifice for the greater good; redefining home and family. Every character contributes meaningfully—emotionally, tactically, politically. Ann

The Water Rituals
The Water Rituals (Trilogy of the White City, #2) by Eva García Sáenz de Urturi
Eva García Sáenz de Urturi

5 stars
I actually enjoyed this book more than the first one.
I did guess the killer very early on but then there were a few other twists at the end that did surprise me..
I think part of me enjoying this one more was the fact I was now familiar with the way things work in Spain - I understood it better (while the first book was a crash course in the society / culture)..
The main character also faced a disability in here.
The killer was more human so you could understand the person better.
All of that made a better book.
But you need to read book #1 first.
