Rosh ~catching up slowly~ (roshreviews) | 425 comments Shanghailanders by Juli Min
Shanghailanders by Juli Min
A literary fiction with reverse storytelling, going from 2040 to 2014. An innovative structure but a bit tricky to read. Good for those who like character-oriented writing.

That one looks interesting Rosh! I recently read another book (Umami by Laia Jufresa) that also went backward in time, but I don't think Jufresa made perfect use of the unusual structure. Based on my friends' reviews, Min makes much better use of it!

It was unusual for sure, Greg. I am still not sure if Min used the backward structure well, but the characters made the journey an interesting one.

The Same Bright Stars by Ethan Joella
This book doesn't disappoint! Ethan Joella is one of the few male authors to write characters' emotions so well.

Thistles and Thieves (Highland Bookshop Mystery #3) by Molly MacRae
No rating. Giving up on this. All talk and not enough action. Characters just waffle on. Persisted as long as I could, waiting for it to get better. It didn’t. Could be me at the moment so others may like it. But not for this reader

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1426 comments I read Sweetland by the Canadian author, Michael Crummey. It's the first book I read by this author. I plan to read more of his books.
The novel is about an elderly man struggling to hold on to a way of life and to the island he calls home. It's very moving and well done.

No longer my kind of book, but it should work fine for romcom fans.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1426 comments I read The Pearl That Broke Its Shell by Nadia Hashimi. It takes place in Afghanistan and tells the fate of two women living one hundred years apart. The two story lines parallel each other. I have mixed feelings about it.

A great story but needs a lot of editing and trimming.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1426 comments I read North Woods by Daniel Mason. It was amazing--unlike anything I've ever read. I think it is my favorite book of the year so far.

Miss Win Tales of Intrigue and Deception by Rosemary Mairs
Yet another indie speculative fiction collection. Some of the endings were a mixed bag for me, but on the whole, it was an intriguing set of stories.

I quite enjoyed the second book of this cosy fantasy series, thanks to the unusual middle-aged lead pair.

Very much an outlier on this review, but I simply couldn't get into the writing style and plot development. it does have fabulous historical content, though.
