Spring Clean for the Peach Queen

Twelve years had passed since the last Harvest Ball.

I was just eighteen when my hometown crowned me their Peach Queen with a blossom coronet. And I was eighteen when I left.

One tanked career, one badly timed glamour shoot and one dead boyfriend later, thirty-year-old Lottie Bentz is finally going home.

Back in the orchard town of Bonnievale, Lottie embarks on a radical declutter of her life, Marie Kondo-style. She casts out everything that got her into trouble: her phone, socials, make-up and a tendency to tell little white lies – to herself and others. But home has its own issues, not least Lottie’s staunchly feminist mother, who is furious with her.

When Lottie lands herself a place to stay in exchange for helping kindly Mrs Brooker try out the Kondo method, it seems like the perfect farm escape. That’s until Angus, Lottie’s former Peach King and heir to the Brooker orchards, makes it clear she’s not welcome – especially when Lottie’s declutter begins to stir up long buried memories and half-truths.

As Lottie finds her way back to herself, can she use her talents to coax Bonnievale and the Brookers out of the past? After all, everyone deserves to feel love, hope and the occasional spark of joy.

A deeply moving story about forgiving, finding joy and falling in love with life again.

It was an absolute pleasure reading Spring Clean for the Peach Queen by Sasha Wasley, it’s a beautiful and touching story and I didn’t want it to end! I wanted to savour every moment, I was totally hooked!

Thirty year old celebrity Charlize Beste (Lottie) has decided no more lying or faking!

After the trauma of her boyfriend dying and the scandal that hit afterwards Lottie finally returns to her hometown of Bonnievale to escape the media frenzy. Bonnievale is an orchard town where she she was crowned The Peach Queen when she was eighteen and still holds the title. She left town shortly afterwards.

When her mother can’t forgive her for the recent scandal and Lottie doesn’t feel welcome at home she moves in with her mum’s friend Mrs. Brooker who offers her a rundown caravan to live in. Mrs Brooker lives on a stone fruit farm with her son Angus aka 'mountain man' who is not keen to see that Lottie has moved in with them. Angus was the Peach King, crowned alongside Lottie twelve years ago.

After she radically declutters her own life Lottie begins the Marie Kondo-style (the Life changing magic of tidying) of decluttering with Mrs Brooker. Lottie is a now changed woman and she forms a beautiful relationship with the kindly Mrs Brooker that will touch your heart.

I just loved this story it was so well written and mesmerising. The characters were well developed and the book cover is just gorgeous!

Rural romance readers will love this tale but for those that aren’t keen on romance reads there is much more to this story and you may be surprised how much you love it too! I need to find more of this author's books to read!

Thanks you to Better Reading and Panera Press for an advanced copy of the book to read.

I read this as part of the Dymocks Reading Challenge 2024 and I'm so pleased the challenge made me pick this book up and read it.

It's been twelve years since Lottie Bentz, the last reigning Peach Queen, has been to her home town of Bonnievale. Bonnievale is known for it's wonderful peach orchards.

After a major scandal, a tanked career and a dead boyfriend, Lottie returns home. She is ready to give it all away; the thousands of followers, the acting dream, the make-up and the lies. She is spring cleaning her life, Marie Kondo style.

I loved this moving story! Lottie is easy to like as we never see the old selfish, superficial Charlize (Lottie's professional name). She is trying her best to turn over a new leaf.
It's very surprising to see who in the town supports her, happy to leave her past in the past, and those who don't.

Love interest Angus is gruff and distant. He had been through some hard times of his own and was currently working the orchard and caring for his mum who was slipping into dementia.
It was fun watching the bright and sunny Lottie get under his skin.

If you like heartfelt contemporary fiction about love, redemption and community with a sweet touch of romance Spring Clean for the Peach Queen will not disappoint.

Spring Clean for the Peach Queen is a story about community, country towns, working together and finding your true self. A wonderful read filled with heart and humour.

Spring Clean for the Peach Queen by Sasha Wasley. (2021).

One tanked career, one badly timed glamour shoot and one dead boyfriend later, 30 year old Lottie is returning home after leaving at age 18, the reigning Peach Queen. Back in her orchard hometown, she embarks on a radical declutter and casts out everything that got her in trouble: her phone, social media, make-up and a tendency to tell little white lies. But home has its own issues, including her feminist mum who is furious with her. Lottie gets accommodation with Mrs Brooker in exchange for helping her declutter, but Mrs Brooker's son Angus (former Peach King) is not thrilled she's there, especially when Lottie's declutter begins to stir up long buried memories and half-truths... but everyone deserves to feel love, hope and the occasional spark of joy.

I can't express how much I enjoyed this book. It was constantly popping up on my social networks, and the author also being from Perth made me quite keen to dive into it. When I started reading it, I seriously didn't want to put it down. It's utterly entertaining! I really liked Lottie. She has her flaws, but over the course of the book she owns up to them. I loved her decision to not lie at all, including little white lies; this made for some awkward but funny moments. I adored Mrs Brooker, she was simply the best. Angus was a great guy, I was really hoping that he and Lottie would end up together; you'll have to read the book to see if my hopes came true! This was such an easy book to read even though it delved into some really emotional concepts around family and life.
Overall: in a nutshell, this engaging book is fantastic. I'd HIGHLY recommend it!

‘My name was not Charlize. It was Charlotte. It was note Beste, either. It was Lottie Bentz, Bonnievale’s reigning Peach Queen, making an inglorious return.’

Sparking plenty of glee, harmony, comfort, understanding and release, Spring Clean for the Peach Queen is the latest contemporary life literature title from West Australian author Sasha Wasley. A story of self growth, detoxing from our excesses, homecoming, connections, belonging and meaning, Sasha Wasley’s new title is a tale that sings to your soul.

It is time for Bonnievale’s most famous Peach Queen to return home after over a decade away. The death of her boyfriend, a controversial photo shoot and a career that has taken a nose dive sees celebrity star Lottie retreat back home to Bonnievale. This dramatic fall from grace sees Lottie remove all the toxic influences in her life – from her social media accounts, to her personal grooming efforts and her fake friends. This total cleanup, which is directly inspired by the well-known Marie Kondo effect, sees Lottie embrace a different way of living. The wholesome and embracing community of Bonnievale are waiting to help Lottie on her journey. But there is one person who remains clear in her opinion of Lottie – and that is Lottie’s mother. She is still very angry and disappointed at her daughter’s actions. When Lottie encounters a face from the past, emotions run high and old memories resurface. Can Lottie help herself and the local community in their time of need?

It is fabulous to see Sasha Wasley venture into new territory with her latest release Spring Clean for the Peach Queen. With a highly successful rural romance series under her belt, Wasley has branched further afield with her new novel, Spring Clean for the Peach Queen. This latest triumph displays Wasley’s talents in the category of contemporary fiction. I would also consider Spring Clean for the Peach Queen to be an uplit title, a sub-genre that seems to be flourishing, especially in these uncertain times.

In Spring Clean for the Peach Queen, we are presented with a main character who is a kind of washed-out celebrity. Lottie is an Australian who desperately wanted to be the next Island Fisher. Sadly, things didn’t quite work out for Lottie in the celebrity world. With a strong line of ill-fated choices behind her and a dead boyfriend, Lottie knows she must come home to Bonnievale. This is a tough realisation for such a determined and talented star, but Lottie’s big fall from grace urges her to take a step back, assess her life and in this process, return home. Wasley does a great job of portraying Lottie – warts and all! I did feel sorry for Lottie, despite her mistakes and flaws. I wanted Lottie to regain control over her life and rediscover what truly matters to her. I can only imagine how hard this would be to go from a world of indulgence and adoration to the simple life. Wasley illustrates this divide well within the pages of her engaging title.

There are some great support cast members in Spring Clean for the Peach Queen and these characters work to extend Lottie’s journey. From local community members such as the town gossip, to giving figures such as the kindly Mrs Brooker, to Lottie’s opposing mother, there are plenty of colourful faces in this appealing life affirming tale. I really loved the character of Angus, Bonnievale’s Peach King. The soft love story between Lottie and Angus was a pleasure to follow. This gentle romance thread warmed by heart.

What I loved the most about Spring Clean for the Peach Queen was the setting. As a West Australian, just like the author, I could easily picture the fictional town of Bonnievale. There are shades of this town in places I have visited such as the real-life location of Donnybrook, a local spot well-known for specialising in apples. Wasley has captured the very essence of these close-knit townships, the community spirit feel and the dramas that come with small town living arrangements. It was great to see this once struggling community thrive and overcome the setbacks that occurred a few years ago. The sense that everyone is in this together and the bonds of community, makes the spirit of the Bonneville community come alive. I definitely felt inspired. I was less inspired to take on the Marie Kondo style of life decluttering through, I think I will leave that up to Lottie! However, I’m sure this angle of the novel will inspire others to have a go!

Within the pages of this noble novel, we have plenty of themes that will unite readers. From personal pride, embracing change, resilience, support, forgiveness, empowerment, choice, control, conflict, resolution and fellowship, Sasha Wasley covers plenty of terrain. Spring Clean for the Peach Queen is an invigorating tale that will bolster your confidence and ease your worries away.

After a lengthy break Sasha returns with a heartfelt and tender story that will spark joy in your life and with a catchy rhyming title and eye pleasing cover how can you go wrong.
Lottie Bentz has decided to return home.
After her acting career stalls, a glamour photo shoot hits the tabloids and her boyfriend dies from a prescription drug overdose.
Her life is a mess and the only way to clean it up is the Marie Kondo method.
So no more alcohol, no social media, no looking glamorous, no faking it, no make up, no replying to emails, in fact no phone at all.
It’s all about decluttering right?
From now on it’s the truth and only the truth that she may speak.
Lottie’s hometown of Bonnievale, the home of the Harvest Ball, where she was last crowned Peach Queen twelve years ago has not been very inviting since she arrived.
Her mother is angry with her and the town has not been engaging.
But Lottie uses her charm to help many and long ago memories resurface as well as finding her true self once again.
This is one of those books that grabs you from page one, takes you on a pleasurable journey and after finishing, leaves you with a smile and stays with you long after.
Full of emotion, full of heart and full of warm real moments and situations.
A family drama, a story of self discovery, a dust of romance and a uplifting and warm tale.
Character development is right on point, plot is mesmerising and heaven and the writing is humorous and magnetic.
A great balance of all the components for a successful favourable contemporary fiction.

This book wasn't my usual genre but I was definitely hooked. The main character was refreshing, charming and interesting and I enjoyed occupying her mind for 400 pages. The romantic interest was a slow burn for me but by the end I was completely on board. And that final moment was perfection – if I hadn’t bought in by then, I would have found it cheesy and predictable but I was 1000% by then.

An excellent romantic story that was believable and realistic is pretty rare, I am very glad I read this one.

Had me grinning from the dedication! As a small town girl with big dreams myself, I knew I was going to like this book from the get-go. Just like the gorgeous cover, this story stars a beautiful cast of characters, a warm country setting and plenty of humour. My first Sasha Wasley novel, but not my last. Oh, what a good read this was! I loved every single character in the book. They practically jumped off the page. Lottie was so flawed and yet a character I couldn't but love. The pacing was superb and kept me rivetted till the end. The story was in turns sad, happy and even funny and it didn't shy away from tackling some serious issues. I've loved everything by Sasha Wasley so far but this one is her best yet.

A great exploration of family dynamics and inter-generational expectations. This is a story of guilt and redemption, past mistakes and how they can shape your life, make or break your character. Different and compelling reading.

CW: ableism

Thirty year old Lottie returns to Bonnievale, a small country town that’s known for peach orchards. Lottie’s acting career has failed, she’s broke and she did a nude photo shoot. She partied hard, which led to tragedy. She wants to leave the old Lottle behind, and Bonnievale is the place to do it.

She doesn’t want to live with her parents, so Mrs Brooker takes her in - Lottie first living in the caravan and then in Mrs Brooker’s house. Lottie helps Mrs Brooker declutter - Marie Kondo style - and is decluttering her own life too.

Angus Brooker, Lottie’s high school sweetheart, split from his wife after a year. After a cold start, he and Lottie her closer.

Lottie was named Peach Queen when she was 18, but the Peach Queen pageant hasn’t run since, due to peach crops getting an infection. The town starts up the Peach Queen pageant again, with Lottie being on the Progress planning committee.

There’s a lot of talk about post natal depression, dementia and scars. Lottie has a facial scar and struggles to come to terms with it. Unfortunately there was some deep ableism - where Lottie and friends discussed acquired disability. The term “vegetable” or “vegetative state” was used(I listened to the audio so can’t rig back to a bookmark to confirm), and a statement about someone would rather be dead than disabled. I was so disappointed, given there was a reasonably positive representation of a character who has Down syndrome.

There was a lot reference to stationery and newsagents, which made me smile. I loved stationery - and bought lots of mags as a kid. It made me smile to hear a mention of gel pens.

But I felt it dragged on a lot, the plot wasn’t enthralling enough to keep my interest.

It’s story or self discovery and reinvention, but it fell flat for me.

This cover is stunning, it caught my eye.

Spring Clean for the Peach Queen by Australian author Sasha Wasley is an absolute country delight.

Lottie Bentz left her orchard town of Bonnievale at the age eighteen where she was crowned Peach Queen. She wanted adventure and not to be stuck in a small town but twelve years later at the age of thirty Lottie returns home. With an ended career behind her due to a wild night out that ended in tabloid scandal after her boyfriend was found dead, Lottie decides to make some radical changes to steer her life in the right direction for ultimate happiness. When she returns home she does not get the welcome she quite hoped for.

Lottie decides to do a Marie Kondo method clean-up for her current situation and begins keeping only what speaks to her heart, and discards items that no longer spark joy. Mrs Brooker a town resident offers Lottie a place to stay in exchange for help on her farm she takes up the opportunity and moves in. All is going well until Angus who was her Peach King makes life difficult for Lottie and is very clear he does not want her in town which frustrated me a great deal as everyone deserves a second chance.

Spring Clean for the Peach Queen is a wonderful read; the story is heart-warming with beautiful characters that take you on an emotional roller-coaster ride. I loved how Lottie found her peace, walking away from situations that threatened her peace of mind, self-respect, values, morals and self-worth. I found Mrs Brooker to be such a lovely character full of warmth and hope for Lottie. I highly recommend this novel.

Thank you Better Reading and Bloomsbury for my advance copy to read in exchange for review.

Thank you to Better Reading Preview and Pantera Press for my uncorrected proof.

I loved this book , it definitely sparked joy for me and I didn't want it to end. I found it very relatable because the author got her inspiration from the Swan Valley in WA and also from a town in the south west and for me, being born and bred in WA these places are familiar to me.
The characters are wonderful and beautifully described. I really liked Mrs Brooker, she is so kind and motherly. The author describes dementia really well and how it must feel for people living with it and their loved ones as well.
I loved Angus, the mountain man/grumpy hermit with an anaphylactic death wish. I liked how the main character Lottie, tried to change her life and how she inspired and helped others in the story to make changes as well.
There is romance, without going over the top and being mushy. There is swearing, humour and sadness as well. It shows how farming and orchard growing can change very quickly due to disease and how people have to adapt to overcome these hardships and try new things.
I loved the cooking which was therapeutic and the decluttering sessions were strangely satisfying . Overall, an absolute joy to read and I think I will be chasing up the author's other books.

Thank you to Pantera Press and Better Reading Preview for an uncorrected copy of this book.
My favourite read this year.
I loved this book.
Charlize (Lottie) returns home after her celebrity lifestyle, questionable choices and a scandal forces her to rethink her life. She returns home to the small town she grew up in and things don't quite go to plan there either. Her mother is none to pleased to see her and refuses to communicate and so Lottie needs alternate accommodation.
A caravan falling apart at the seams on her mother's friend, Mrs Brooker's peach farm fits the bill and the fun begins as she struggles to work out who she is, where she fits in and what's important in her life.
Mrs Brooker is a sweetheart and the complete opposite of her grumpy son Angus, who is less than pleased by Lottie's arrival. The story weaves together the characters, relationships, budding romance and small town setting beautifully. It had me laughing out loud and shedding a few tears along the way.
I haven't read any work by this author before, although True Blue has been in my TBR pile for ages. After reading Spring Clean for the Peach Queen it will move to the top of the pile.

Lottie was named Peach Queen when she was 18 in her home town. She then chose to follow her dreams of being an actress in the city. After major dramas in her life she escapes back to Bonnievale away from the media and her so called friends. She finds herself living with lovely Mrs Brooker and her son Angus.
This is a well written book that I really enjoyed. I loved the characters especially Lottie. She was trying to be true to herself which I thought was excellent.
Laughter and tears throughout. I recommend this book. This is the first book of Sasha Wasley's I have read but I will be looking for more.

I was expecting a fun light read and got so much more. I absolutely loved Lotte, I think we’ve all had that moment where you wonder if you want to keep being this person. I thought the concept was just lovely, the peaches and peach spot just perfect and farming- my goodness who would do it? There’s so much more to love than just the storyline, I completely loved it x

A smile crept onto my lips as soon as I read the dedication of this book- ‘Dedicated to young women in small towns with big dreams.’ I just love that!

The young women in this story is Lottie, who grew up wanting to be an actress. And she did just that - she followed her dreams and became an actress living an ‘insta-worthy’ life in the city under the name of Charlize.

But the big life in the city didn’t work out for Charlize and after a scandal that puts her firmly in the spotlight, she runs back to her hometown of Bonnievale, where 12 years ago she was crowned Peach Queen to hide away.

Suddenly all of her priorities have shifted.

In hope to forget the past, Lottie begins a Marie Kondo style of decluttering her life.

When her own mother can’t seem to forgive her, Lottie finds herself living in a rundown caravan on a Peach farm, home to Mrs Brooker and her son Angus (who was crowned Peach King with Lottie all those years ago).

Lottie forges a relationship with Mrs Brooker and their blossoming friendship will leave your heart a little tender.

Angus appears less than thrilled about Lottie’s arrival, but of course that will just have you rooting for them to get together even more! The romance leaves you feeling gushy.

There are some fantastic characters in this one - each with their own clear voices and plenty to bring a smile onto your face.

The author has successful created a beautiful small-town feel and I’m sure readers of Rural Romance are going to love this one.

The story will make readers consider their own dreams and it pulls into focus what is really important in life. What can we declutter from our own lives and what brings us joy?

Reading this book certainly brought me joy!

Thank you to Pantera Press and the Better Reading Preview campaign for the copy of the book.

Low-key, slow-paced, and cozy. Really enjoyed the reading experience. I do not regret shipping the book here from Australia.

+ Unique story
+ Satisfyingly paced
+ Uplifting, tender messages
+ Lots of fun Australian jargon
+ I adored Caroline, was thoroughly amused by Pris, appreciated Angus's complexity, and enjoyed a lot of the other supporting characters as well

- Occasional awkward bits/dialog that gave me self-published vibes (possibly a reflection of Australian fiction conventions??)
- Some head-scratching moments because Australia's political correctness is a little different from America's
- Would've liked more of a resolution in the end; it just kind of faded out
- Lottie was an interesting protagonist, but I didn't identify with her and questioned a lot of her thinking

This is a wonderful tale of (Charlize) Lottie who returns to her home town after 12 years away. She turned 18 and when she won the Peach Queen festival, she left to make her fame and fortune in the city.

Things didn't turn out quite the way she'd planned and amidst a scandal, she came home to find herself again.

Lottie focuses on the Marie Kondo style of decluttering, both her home and her life.

She assists others to perform this as well,  reminding them to keep the things that bring a spark of joy and discarding the rest, respectfully.

The characters are beautifully drawn and you feel as though they are among your friends. There are laughs and tears, and quite a few sparks of joy. I really enjoyed Sasha's writing and would recommend this book to those who enjoy Australian fiction, with a little bit of romance thrown in.

Spring Clean for The Peach Queen is a sweet, easy to read book with a romantic Aussie flavour to it. Just like her previous works such as Dear Banjo, Wasley has you feeling all the feels, one minute you will be laughing and then the next silently sobbing with despair. Wasley has a knack of developing her characters beautifully relatable especially for those who have grown up in small towns like me. I found myself relating the characters back to people from my hometown. With this novel, Wasley has cemented herself has a must read/buy author in my life.

An excellent read that I couldn't put down.

You know that feeling when you finish a book and end up staring longingly at the cover thinking, ‘Oh, I wish there was more’? Welcome to my experience with Spring Clean for the Peach Queen!

All the stars for this wonderful, warm hug of a book!

Former Bonnievale Peach Queen and now disgraced celeb, Charlotte ‘Lottie’ Bentz returns to her hometown where she decides to use the Marie Kondo ‘Spark Joy’ decluttering method to rid herself of her celeb persona, her vanity and her lies. Lottie soon finds herself using the Kondo method to help sweet Mrs Brooker, mother of the town’s former Peach King turned gruff farmer, Angus, as she declutters the old lady’s spare room and uncovers secrets from the past. What follows is a charming story of finding freedom from the past and creating new beginnings.

This book is an absolute delight! A superbly uplifting but emotional read that I just couldn’t put down.

I loved the cast of characters and the rural setting. There was a good balance of drama, intrigue and romance amidst this well-paced plot and I’m mad for anything to do with decluttering so the premise had me hooked from the start!

🍑Family drama
🍑Small town drama
🍑Decluttering

🍑Friendship
🍑New beginnings

A joy to read and an absolute gem of a book!

After a tragic event in the big city Charlize Beste packs up her acting career and heads home. The former Peach Queen is scorned by her mother making Charlize AKA Lotte Bentz feel instantly unwelcome. Feeling abandoned she retreats to a local farm owned by her Peach King, Angus Brooker and his aging mother Mrs B. Using the Kondo method she methodically helps Mrs B organise her life while revaluating her own at the same time.
There is so much to love about Spring Clean for the Peach Queen, the characters are heart felt and come to life on the pages. I poured myself into this glorious story and felt a connection with each and every person as the narrative developed. Sasha Wasley’s writing style flowed from the pages and made the book extremely difficult to put down. At close to 500 pages a book of this size can be quite daunting but this one left me craving more, and a deep sadness on its completion. It will bring out all the feels and might just make you evaluate what sparks joy in your life. If you read one book this year make it Spring Clean for the Peach Queen!
