Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1426 comments I read Good Night, Irene by Luis Alberto Urrea. Basing it on the experiences of his mother, Urrea writes a fictional account of women who served in the ARC Clubmobiles during World War II. I think it is worth reading because it highlights the sacrifices and invaluable contributions these women made to the war effort. But I thought his character portrayals were weak.

Maplecroft by Mary-Clare Terrill
A dual timeline novel, with the historical timelines based on actual love letters written by the author's great-grandparents to each other. This is what made me give the novel a go. The historical timeline makes it a good read.

This Motherless Land by Nikki May
A loose retelling of Jane Austen's 'Mansfield Park', but works much better if you don't read it as a retelling.

The Lives and Deaths of Harry Blunt (Port Harker #1) by Obediah Keane
An entertaining indie fantasy about a man who grabs a second chance for life to save his daughter. Minor flaws, major fun.

Tatyana | 114 comments Just finished Fever by Deon Meyer
5 Stars
A very well written novel about society starting over again after a deadly virus that killed 99% of population. Loves seeing how natural leaders arise, who they are challenged by for power and authority, and how humans can make everything from nothing, if they want to live a better life.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1426 comments I read The Road to the Country by Chigozie Obioma. It's the story of the 1967 civil war in Nigeria in which the Igbo-dominated region of Biafra sought its independence from Nigeria. The novel may not be for everyone because it contains very graphic descriptions of the violence and carnage.

Lion Dancers by Cai Tse
The story could have been finetuned a little more in this MG graphic novel, but the details of lion dancing were impeccable. The author is a lion dancer with the Chinese Youth League of Australia.

I had grabbed this before I learnt how much hype surrounded the book. Thankfully, it's quite nice, though not flawless. Good for an light and entertaining cosy fantasy read.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1426 comments I read A Complicated Kindness by Miriam Toews. I enjoyed the narrative voice, but I didn't think this novel was as good as her other books, especially Fight Night, All My Puny Sorrows, and A Boy of Good Breeding.

A decent indie magical realism novel. Not my kind of writing style, though I love the genre.

The Trial of Mrs. Rhinelander by Denny S. Bryce
A book based on the actual Rhinelander vs. Rhinelander case in 1925 in the USA. Would have worked better for me if it actually focussed more on the legal proceedings than staying put on the outside of the courtroom.

A dual-timeline novel with the historical part focussing on an actual 17th century woman who was a highway robber. Worth a read for her story.
