This is a two book task - you can read two books from two different options, or use the same option for two books.
Option 1 - Award Winners: I always try to read all of the nominees for all the various science fiction and fantasy book awards, with mixed success. Read a book that has WON an award. The award must be included in the book's Goodreads metadata.
Option 4 - Sword & Laser: One of the other GR Groups I'm in sets yearly challenges for Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Graphic novels, and I always (ALWAYS) fall behind on SciFi. Read a book with MPG Science Fiction. The genre may be standalone or embedded (nested) but combination genre "Science Fiction Fantasy" does NOT work.
I am using two books -- both of which fit two options: opt. 1 Award Winners, and opt. 4 “Science Fiction” genre.
Book 1. I read Anathem by Neal Stephenson. Opt. 1. Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel of 2009. (Also Opt. 4. “Science Fiction” is top genre on GR main page.)

Book 2. I read All the Birds in the Sky by Charlie Jane Anders. “Science Fiction” is the second listed GR genre on the main page, after “Fantasy.” This is not, however, the combination genre “Science Fiction Fantasy” which the task forbids. (It also fills Option 1, as the Nebula Award for Best Novel of 2016, and Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel of 2017.)
