Agreed. I think there was some thought to prevent that. If Diamond drops everything from April on May 20th, that's going to hurt a little.

noelbeast | 489 comments Great news about those Marvel releases coming back online! Hopeful indeed that those missing April releases get dropped mid-May.

Just got my copy of JMS Spider-Man vol 2 from IST today. Everything lines up nice next to vol 1, except I hate the flat spine...

Weird. Maybe after a read it’ll flex out.

I would have preferred the omnibus but I already had the OHCs.

message 5906: by noelbeast (new)

noelbeast | 489 comments It was printed in Malaysia and has the flat spine on purpose. Near Mint Condition addressed it in a video they did on the volume. Apparently no issues with the binding itself, but I don’t think the flat spine will continue. Apparently the new printing of the Wolverine omni also has a flat spine, though, along with the forthcoming Black Widow omnibus.

message 5907: by Darth Bane (new)

Darth Bane | 261 comments I too dislike the JMS omni's flat spine. But, it seems to be of quality construction. There is some gutter loss but honestly there aren't too many double page layouts in this run so its not too upsetting. Plus I saw a thread on the wolverine omni where some people were able to stretch the spine and get an eye. I'll try that at some point and see if I have any success.

message 5908: by noelbeast (new)

noelbeast | 489 comments Yeah, I opened mine up last night and compared a few pages I have collected in other books. Really not that bad with the gutter loss.

For me it’s more about aesthetics, but then with different designs on dust jackets, logo/branding placements not lining up, etc...kind of a moot point anyway. Gotta keep telling myself it’s more about the content collected than how perfect the shelves look!

It's fascinating to me how important the aesthetics are to people (me included) and yet for other people it doesn't even cross their mind. For years I've been trying to figure out why having things "look the same" or "line up the same" is so important to me.

The Steve Canyon 1961-1962 HC vol 8 is out of stock with distributors now. Not sure anyone here is collecting these but this volume is currently available at reasonable prices on Ebay if you need it. I need a cheap volume 7.

It's been a couple weeks since I got a new order in from IST but I should have a box coming Thursday. :)

message 5911: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments I totally missed there is an Absolute Fourth World coming out?!?

Does anyone know what the plan is for these as in how many? Will the orders be in order like the Omni or structured by title?

The Omni is so gigantic and I’m mostly in it for the art so considering switching to the Absolute depending on the plan.

I want to say we were speculating it was going to be two or three Absolutes when we discussed a few months back. With 816 pages in the first Absolute I think two is probably where we will end up (omnibus has 1,481 pages).

I didn't buy the omnibus so I am considering picking up the first Absolute and seeing how I feel about the set. It appears the omnibus is sold out and Amazon asking prices are climbing over cover price (cheapest is $177).

I’ve been on the fence with this as well. I think I would prefer the omnibus and a few weeks so IST still had some.

Can confirm IST does still have copies at $87.00. :)

message 5915: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments IST still has it, though there are 2 versions and 1 has a misprinted Jimmy Olson page. DC better build the hell out of this Absolute, I’m surprised I can’t find a first look video of it anywhere. Has anyone actually seen it?

I don't think it's been released yet. It's listed on Amazon as a 4 Jun 20 release. Normally that would put it available a week before on IST. It will be one of the thicker Absolutes (it may be the most pages so far in an Absolute?).

message 5917: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments I’m just surprised there is no YouTube of a first look from Near Mint Condition or GemMint, even other related books have been shown there, but maybe that’s more Marvel

I'm collecting those, too. Learned to buy them as they come out. I got all the Terry and the Pirates, but I'm too far behind to get all the Dick Tracy volumes. I'd love to have them but too many are OOP and expensive.

I'm coming in way late. I have the old novels (four of them published by Grosset and Dunlap IIRC) and read them as a teen. I've been meaning to get into these and finally pulled the trigger with the lowest number IST was showing in stock.

If you're interested in seeing how Caniff matures as an artist, then Terry and the Pirates might interest you. They're pretty solid with some good action going on.

I first got into Steve Canyon back in the 80s, when Kitchen Sink Press reprinted a number of the strips in a semi-monthly magazine along with historical articles, etc. Found some on Ebay a couple years ago for a good price, and a good addition to your collection if you like magazine sized pamphlet comics. The Canyon strips collected in those are already found in the IDW books, though.

I love the idea of the book, but I don’t know why Kindt and Lemir need a kickstarter to publish a book.

Erik wrote: "I love the idea of the book, but I don’t know why Kindt and Lemire need a kickstarter to publish a book."

Agreed, the only thing that pops out as really unusual is the potential for it to have multiple gatefold expanding pages. Maybe their normal publishing companies weren't into that idea? Maybe there is a printer they are trying to get work for during these Covid times? It's a little more expensive than most books I get by page count but it is oversized and I like all three of the creators (Rubin on art is nice. Love the Ether series he has going on with Kindt right now).

message 5925: by Erik, Moderator (new)

Eastham Erik (erikakasash501) | 851 comments Mod
I grabbed it too because I’ve been waiting for Kindt and Lemire to collaborate . . . If only they’d team up with Remender too!!!

The comment on Kickstarter was simply that if these guys want to publish a book, they have the means to do so outside of Kickstarter; leave Kickstarter and go fund me for struggling artists. I hear you about possible gatefold pages creating a bit of difficulty, but that’s nothing new; we have other comics and HC with that feature.

If it’s about helping a printer/publisher in hard times, the. They should say so in the description, it would probably result in more sales. They do reference who they will use (Someone Kindt has used before).

Final note, Rubins alright, but I hope there is at least a little Kindt art too.

Nickviola | 1019 comments Just when I think I understand what's happening in the world of COVID comic shipping, Big Damn Sin City has a reprint on IST for 42% off? I had no idea that was coming so picked it up.

I also decided to get over my annoyance that Black Hammer/Justice League was standard size and ordered that too.

Ozan (dotanuki) | 222 comments jojo part 4, vol. 4-5
Transformers, The Manga, vol. 1-2

message 5928: by noelbeast (new)

noelbeast | 489 comments Damn...that seems like an incredible deal for a Sin City collection. Another reason why I love this community! It wasn’t even on my radar but for 44% off (just placed an IST order over the weekend) no way could I say no.

message 5929: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments And they camouflaged it by just putting up the picture of the box it comes in. With such a recognizable cover that seems silly. They do this with the Artist Editions too, you’re trying to see a 100+ dollar art book and you advertise with a picture of plain brown cardboard.

message 5930: by Chen (new)

Chen | 24 comments I just received Big Damn Sin City two days ago and is still very excited. I have paperbacks, but always wanted the OHC just couldn't find one with reasonable enough price. I didn't have any hope since I don't recall Dark Horse ever reprinted their omnibus/colossal size book. Three weeks ago I was watching NMC of his top ten Dark Horse books, and he mentioned this was still in print. My first reaction was he got this too wrong, but searched anyway and was shocked finding it available on Amazon and IST. Of course ordered it from IST. Still held my breath hoping it's not a listing mistake until received it. :)

message 5931: by noelbeast (new)

noelbeast | 489 comments Yeah, I was curious about what was up with that picture.

Nice Chen! Glad it came through for you! Looking forward to getting my copy now. There’s some on eBay still listed for hundreds, so either some lazy sellers or this took most of us by surprise.

Mine has been happily on the shelf for years upon release. I had no idea it was seeing reprinted.

As for my pick up, the new Swamp Thing was in the cart Tuesday from IST and before I could finish the payment, they sold out. Grabbed it on Amazon for the same price and it arrived today without any dents or wear. The book is a beauty.

Darth Bane | 261 comments Yeah thats the one! I just finished the crossover with Ordway's Power of Shazam, which is one of my favorite series. I'm about half way through the whole thing and I can understand why this series has a cult following. I can say for certain that I would now buy that mega omnibus that was cancelled last year if it ever pops back up again.

The thing with Image is that the creators themselves are the ones that decide over and finance the collections of their comics since the creators owns the IP.

message 5942: by noelbeast (new)

noelbeast | 489 comments I had some luck leading to some nice pick-ups this month (still in mail so probably shouldn’t get too excited), and then of course some pretty bad news to balance out the cosmos. Seems fair.

I've mentioned on here submitting to CGC for free the last 2 months, and for myself decided that it was a perfect time to send in a couple of graded comics suffering from the infamous Newton Rings problem.

Well...about that. Two 9.8-graded slabs I sent in were apparently damaged in transit, and CGC is now working to press/fix the comics. If the grades slip even to 9.6's, I'm looking at a potential FMV loss of $350 minimum.

Good news is I documented their condition before shipping and insured with USPS full value, but further bad news is CGC has to provide me with evidence of the damage for my claim to have a shot, and in the next 30 days or I can't file. Since they didn't tell me about the damage for 3 weeks and only after I reached out to them to ask about a delay, not exactly confident that I won't be losing money.

So...send any good karma my way you're willing to spare, please!

Ha, its worth it! That book is easily worth 4 other Omnis you will never look at again. Plus, earliest a reprint would be at this point is like middle of 2021 so you'd year to sell it back. I know thats not the point, but after these big purchases I always like hearing things like that!

Noel: WTF - what were the books? I have 4 X-men books between issues #3-10 that are probably ~5 and have never gotten officially graded but have always considered. Send good thoughts your way!!

Thanks Nick, appreciate it!

A newsstand of Spectacular Spider-Man #101 was the most valuable, and the other was a Marvel Comics Presents #72.

The really crummy thing is that the SSM101 was sandwiched between the MCP and a floppy in a cardboard shell, each individually wrapped in bubble wrap and then the whole group bubble wrapped in a big bundle. I specifically put the SSM in the middle because I figured if something bad happened, it'd be the safest. Something very catastrophic must've happened to the box to have both slabs affected.

That's honestly one of the biggest reasons I wanted to post about the experience. I think your chances of something like this happening are still pretty low and there's a lot of steps to take to protect yourself, but still, feel kind of bad for encouraging you and anyone else on here to submit.

message 5947: by Blindzider, Moderator (new)

Blindzider | 3293 comments Mod
No reason to feel bad. Really just bad luck. I’ll just have to be even more cautious.

message 5948: by noelbeast (new)

noelbeast | 489 comments Well I’ll tell you for sure: if I ever continue using them, I would definitely drop them off at conventions from here on out (once they’re on again). That way CGC has full responsibility with shipping, and has to deal with anything like this themselves. All you’re responsible for is what you’re in control of, like getting them there to hand off.

message 5949: by Blindzider, Moderator (new)

Blindzider | 3293 comments Mod
Yeah that sounds like the best way. Unfortunately despite the size of the city I live in, we really don’t have many opportunities to do that. I’ll have to dig a little deeper. Maybe I just haven’t been looking for it. I’m still really eager to have some books graded though. Just need to wait until it’s safe to do so financially.

message 5950: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments And books people have found cheap on Amazon? I’m looking for something new to read that could get to me fast and that I wouldn’t normally get on IST so I’m not taking away their business. Like any hidden gems from IDW, dark horse, independent?
