Darth Bane | 261 comments Big week this week for me after a long drought. I picked up the JMS Spider-Man vol 2 omnibus from IST like a lot of people. But, I found a slammin deal on the Byrne FF omnis (vol 2 was DM), which came today. Very excited to read through them! Now I need to get my hands on vol. 2 and 3 of the Lee/Kirby run... I'm also considering picking up the Waid omni - does anyone else have that and recommend it? What about the Fraction one? I haven't heard as much hype about that one

I didn't know about the metal support that can be purchased for the shelf. I'll have to look at those.

I think the Waid Fantastic Four omnibus is on my long list of books I'd like to pick up but haven't. I have read the Fraction omnibus and thought it was ok. Very hard to compare it to Hickman's run as his FF run is one of the best modern runs in comics.

We may see a new book or two on IST today? If so probably in limited quantities. I haven't heard anything about the release time on JMS Spider-Man omnibus variant covers on IST yet.

noelbeast | 489 comments While it certainly can't be called a trend yet, the last 2 Marvel box sets released have been team-based with The Avengers and X-Men. Especially with the popularity of the X-Men set, I'm hoping the next set they release is Fantastic Four. I prefer the X-Men set's focus on all comics from issue 1 until the end of the Dark Phoenix storyline, and wish the Avengers set was better planned than just an obvious cash grab on the coattails of Endgame's release last year. However, if they do either treatments for the FF, I'd probably buy it. A couple of years ago I nearly picked up a set of FF Omni's at (now) a pretty good deal, but I didn't read them much as a kid and didn't think the cost was justifiable. Box set treatment could be a way to pull in people on the fence like me, unless reprints of vol. 2-3 are on the way anytime soon.

Hoping IST has copies of the Wolverine Vol. 1 reprint available today. Last week JMS vol. 2's release date on Amazon lined up with IST's brief availability, and Amazon's got Wolverine Vol. 1 listed for April 21st...

I’ve read both Waid’s and Fraction’s FF runs and they are both just ok. Simply don’t compare to Lee/Byrne/Hickman runs. They are worth reading though. I have the Waid OHCs but passed on buying the Fraction one.

message 5855: by Nickviola (last edited Apr 21, 2020 09:26AM) (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments My favorite character teams are X-Men and FF and then everyone else way way below them.

I have all the FF Omni and agree if you don’t either love the FF, love all of Waid, or love all of Fraction you can skip these. Waid centers on their celebrity status and sounds like a generic superhero voice, I don’t hear Waid like I do in his DD. (That said his Cap Omni is one of the only omnis I bought and sold within a month for lack of interest after starting if). The Fraction run is interesting and I actually really like Fraction, but again his voice gets lost and it’s not as clean as most of his ideas (Hawkeye). They are also not required to know the characters. My two cents.

message 5856: by Darth Bane (new)

Darth Bane | 261 comments Thanks for the feedback everyone! I’ll keep them on the back burner for now then and focus on the silver age run.

Eastham Erik (erikakasash501) | 851 comments Mod
I have all the box sets except the first avengers one and this last x-men one. I didn’t bite in the x-men as too much of it is just a repeat from the Omnis I already have. The other box sets would put in enough supplemental material outside of the omnis to make it worth it IMO.

message 5858: by noelbeast (new)

noelbeast | 489 comments Based on current prices, seems like the X-Men set sold quite well, and haven’t seen much in terms of criticism beyond questioning the thickness of the paper, so sounds like it was well put together. I passed on it too, though there were a few issues in the Lost Years book that I don’t have. Someone mentioned in the ballot thread that they wished for a Lost Years omni and I agree, though the X-Men Masterworks vol 7-8 have most of those issues already there.

Blindzider | 3293 comments Mod
I’d be in for a lost Years Omni. Even though I probably have most of MMW V7 already.

message 5860: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments So do people think IST has a group of Wolverine and Astonishing X-Men omnis that are coming their way eventually and will pop up on a future Tuesday?

message 5861: by noelbeast (new)

noelbeast | 489 comments I assume they do, although otherwise it just makes me scratch my head more about them suddenly having some JMS vol 2’s last week.

I preordered the Wolverine reprint on Amazon a few weeks ago after this all started for about $65, and just cancelled it last night—hopefully won’t regret that. When I cancelled it was still listed as releasing today. Looked the book up a moment ago and now Amazon has it listed for $90 & available this Friday. Curious.

Did anyone watch CheapGraphicNovels and what they actually had available, whenever they supposedly got new books? I completely forgot about them.

Darth Bane | 261 comments Just a heads up for those who got the Wolverine reprint, it looks like there may be a printing error:

I know a lot of us are on reddit but I’d want to be in the know. This looks like a single data point right now. Not sure how many books were affected.

noelbeast | 489 comments I just asked the guy where he got his copy and he said he preordered it on Amazon and it arrived yesterday. That doesn’t make a ton of sense to me.

Edit: Amazon now has the book listed as in stock. I guess he lives close to a distribution center or can do same day delivery.

Let the hunt begin!

DC announced that DCBS was going to be distributing for them. IST and TOW are both owned by them but IST doesn’t seem to be getting anything.

I wish I knew who else had Marvel stuff. CGN is still a little too expensive for me to jump the gun.

message 5873: by noelbeast (new)

noelbeast | 489 comments I’m just assuming that IST/TOW isn’t getting anything new for April releases because they already had a deal/purchase arranged with Diamond, and they’re just waiting for Diamond to come back online for fulfillment. It makes sense to me that distribution sales are made months in advance for more accurate publishing numbers, etc., and so IST wouldn’t really want to spend even more to seek out immediate, short term outside distribution sources, so they ask us to be patient.

Meanwhile CGN senses there’s a short term market cornering opportunity here, and has tried to make efforts to buy additional copies of books from other distribution sources. They can sell what few others apparently have, boost sales, and long term maybe steal away some loyal customers.

I have an order pending with Jack of Fables OHC vol 3, Black Max TPB vol 1 (blind purchase WWI comic), checking out the first couple volumes of a couple manga stories, No Guns Life, Witch Hat Atelier, and Gleipnir.

I picked up the first three volumes of the Blame Master Editions off Ebay for a decent price. I need the last three but the price point ($26 each) is off-putting.

That makes sense and I think you are right which is why I don't feel the need to pay a little more at CGN to get stuff now, when I'm confident it'll be available in a few weeks or more. Kudos to CGN for continuing to try and make it happen.

Anybody else making progress reading previous purchases? I still have a few months worth of stuff to read, but I'm whittling it down. Should be just in time for new stuff to start arriving. Although I'm getting a little concerned about spending money on books after I just had layoffs here at work.

message 5876: by noelbeast (new)

noelbeast | 489 comments Well, I hope I’m right! I’ve been looking forward to this Wolverine reprint for a while, but seeing as how most places I usually buy from don’t seem to have it, hoping there’s a ton of copies being held up by Diamond.

I keep going back and forth about making any big purchases next month for books. I’ve got plenty to read, but I feel like I’m finally on the cusp of getting caught up with past releases. If your company has been handing out layoffs, I’d say be abundantly cautious until we know more about the economic situation.

For me, still reading the Civil War box set, and about halfway through. I’ve really enjoyed how Marvel used Speedball as such a central character to the peripheral stories of the plot, but some of the tie in issues just aren’t doing it for me.

noelbeast | 489 comments I’m hoping that maybe I can add a low grade X-Men #1 to my collection sometime in the next year or so. I don’t mind a ratty copy, already got a beautiful cover reproduction to display, but I want something with some patina.

Also, not too late to submit to CGC for free. The original postmark due date was April 12th, but they extended to the 30th. I sent some books in on the 13th and they accepted them, currently processing.

I talked to a friend who has also done this quite a bit and he convinced me it would be worth getting the premium membership, which just means more money up front. So I'm not in too much of a hurry and I'm still thinking about what books I'm going to do first. A few for selling but I'm probably going to eventually do all of my early Uncanny X-Men and early Amazing Spider-Man.

message 5881: by noelbeast (new)

noelbeast | 489 comments In the grand scheme of things, it’s really not that bad to buy premium for a year, especially if you’re submitting a lot of books. I think it’s $30, and sometimes that’s even on sale.

Really, this deal they’ve got going on is best for people who only have a few books to submit, or for those of us who rely on the free submissions at cons. Speaking of which, the Con I go to got pushed back until Nov., which makes me happy that they’re still trying, although current health predictions have me thinking just a no go on any cons this year.

message 5882: by Blindzider, Moderator (new)

Blindzider | 3293 comments Mod
Yeah I think a lot of people will be cautious the rest of this year, even if things get better I doubt sponsors will want to support cons.

I also think the longer this drags on the less people will spend on non-essentials and start focusing on food and bills to pay.

Nickviola | 1019 comments I read Motor Girl, it was excellent. Another great character and mix of fantastic story telling and zanny cartooning mixed into an emotional story.

Also, I was surprised to see IDW had the Grasscutter Artist Select still available so pulled the trigger (since I’m in a comic drought)... that will be my first entry into Usagi Yojimbo! At least this way I can read the Grasscutter story arc. I would go after the whole hardcover set but seems like Volume 1 is cost prohibitive.

IDW should be reprinting the past run on Usagi all in color. So that should help with the volume 1 material in hardcover eventually. I think a decent amount of people are hoping the last of the Dark Horse material gets released in TPB omnibus/hardcover by Dark Horse still but with no solicit not sure how likely that is.

IST should have Baltimore standard size omnibus vol 2 in stock today. Likely only a hundred or so copies so I'd plan on trying to grab one as soon as it is available if you want to try to get one. Haven't heard any info on any other book being newly available today from IST.

With the exception of Usagi Vol 1 HC (Which I’ve given up on for the moment, stupid prices), I literally have nothing left to buy at the moment other than books that haven’t been published yet; kinda sad the want list of past books is filled, but gratifying too.

As such, to support IST, I Picked up the new DMZ Compendium Vol 1 the other week; I’ve never been super interested, but I thought why not.

What I found interesting was the label on the compendium is DC Black Label and not Vertigo. I know Vertigo was rebranded as Black Label, but considering the series from beginning to end was always published under Vertigo, I feel despite the rebranding, purely published books under Vertigo should still show that logo on newly printed editions or at least share it with black label.

message 5891: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments Baltimore V2 looks like the only new IST release but if anyone hears of the other omnis (Wolverine, astonishing, timely) let me know!

Baltimore is excellent as I’ve mentioned. Interesting that IST is limiting it to 1 copy but it’s still easily available on eBay and even V1 is still on US amazon for cheap.
