So did anyone take my advice and sell their annihilation omnibus a couple months ago?

I did not.

I want to buy the last Blade of the Immortal TPB omnibus. Amazon has it but IST does not. I might just have to go with Amazon. Not sure if it sold out on IST but I've been watching for it so it may just not have been released with them yet. The manga books distribution may be a bit different - anyone know if they do or don't go through the main comic distribution channels?

Edit to add:
I saw some comments indicating Dark Judges: Fall of Deadworld HC vol 2 will be out on IST today. This book takes place in the Judge Dredd world and shows the world the dark judges come from be destroyed as they come into their powers. It will be interesting to see if anyone normal survives.

I'm excited to finally be able to get a copy and read Annihilation. It's the last piece I need to finish off that era of cosmic Marvel.

Can anyone comment on DK3? I'm probably going to pass on the Absolute until I can read it first. I love Kubert's art but Azzarello's writing has always been off-putting to me.

I have it but haven't read it. It should be 50% off this week. Since I have the oversize hardcover box set I'm not planning on picking up the Absolute but I'm sure it will be the nicest way to own it.

I liked the Annihilation story. :)

message 5456: by Darth Bane (new)

Darth Bane | 261 comments I ordered the DK III absolute edition today. I have the first one, and I'm sort of a completionist when it comes to having all the absolutes. I'll say this... I really like DK I. I don't know if its the best batman story like many say, but I can appreciate it for how it altered the mythos. I hated DK II, to the point I almost had zero interest in buying the first absolute (but I bought it anyway). DK III is closer in theme and tone to DK I, and thats a good thing. While Miller's involvement in DK III was minimal, I think that probably for the best. Some of his recent work like Superman Year One is polarizing, and I don't know if his version of DK III would have stuck the landing. Supposedly he has plans for DK IV which will end the series... we will cross that bridge when we get to it. As far as DK III goes, I think its worth picking up the TPB/digitial version and giving it a read before you buy the absolute. Generally I think series that should get the absolute treatment are ones with incredible oversized artwork (see Justice, Kingdom Come, New Frontier, etc.), and DK I-III are the real exceptions to that in my collection, but thats just my own opinion. Art is subjective, and if really love this style, or at least feel the need to buy this one to match your first absolute, I say go for it while its half off.

The only thing good about DKII was that it was made a part of the DK Absolute so I didn't have to buy that piece of garbage separately to complete the collection; I just consider it a add on (that I can skip) to what I bought that absolute for . . . DKI.

noelbeast | 489 comments I just finished up my first read-through of the Annihilation omnibus about a week ago. Mostly lived up to the hype, although I didn’t really enjoy the Ronan issues—just something about the character for me, and I didn’t enjoy the odd, overblown physiques. Also thought there was a plot hole in the story regarding Galactus, but lo and behold, very last issue in the book addressed.

First time reading anything cosmic Marvel. I can see why people have such love for characters like the Silver Surfer and Nova, and it was fun to finally see a comic portrayal of Drax.

I was never into cosmic marvel (didn’t even like Infinity Gauntlet that much. Gasp!) I’ve since read annihilation conquest and the three realm of Kings omnibus. There’s some good stuff in there but there’s something about the earth bound heroes that I find more relatable, despite the fact that I like Sci-fi.

I’ll be starting Annihilation Conquest soon, and looking forward to those War/Realm of Kings books, especially since there’s at least an initial tie in to the X-Men.

That is helpful and good to know. Clearly I missed it. I also missed the Baltimore omnibus the couple times it was available so I may have a couple books to pick up from Amazon here in a bit.

Are you caught up on Blade of the Immortal? I've read up to the last book. There are some pretty crazy fights.

Received the Abstract Studio Stranger's in Paradise Omnibus Exclusive. Didn't have time to break the plastic yet, but the HC slipcase presentation looks good so far.

For those who missed out, IST should have the HC Omnibus in the next couple weeks.

Finally, big thank you to this community. The only reason I knew to preorder this months ago was because of this group.

Thank you to all of you who participate in the discussions.

Same here! Excited for a reread and to see what extras they’ll include.

Also just got word yesterday that a company I buy comic display pieces from is finally restocking their connecting cover frames after being sold out since August. I’ve got plans to display my HOX/POX connecting covers and have been sitting on my hands for far too long.

Pretty pumped about the Shattershot OHC, too. Outside of a UXM Vol. 4, this will give me everything in omni/OHC form up to Road to Onslaught.

Can you provide a link to the company? I’m curious what they have. I like the few comic frames that I have but curious what else is out there. I know I don’t like the plastic ones.

https://thecollectorsresource.com/

Great product, and I’m with you all the way about a dislike for the plastic ones. These are solid piece wooden frames, and I’ve spent over a grand on them now...

I only buy the museum editions with the UV blocking acrylic, since they’re not typically that much more and don’t know how my display choices will evolve over time. Very durable. Depending on the situation I sometimes hang with 3M double sided mounting strips, and one early test fell about 3-4 ft onto hardwood without any damage.

Only knocks in my opinion: the modern single issue frames can’t accommodate a thick book like Amazing Spider-Man #700, or books graded by CGC that require a thicker slab. To frame those, you need to “modify” the frame so that it can stick out from the wall more. Also the back latches aren’t tabbed into the back of the frame. I usually don’t attach them, and instead just opt to use packing tape to affix the back cover so the frames can rest flush against the wall. Example 1: https://imgur.com/a/oPa4rnu

Finally, frames for slabbed comics don’t have a back cover, so I tape the back of the slab directly to the frame, which diehard collectors might think I’m stupid for doing. It doesn’t affect appearance in any way, though, and I don’t plan on ever selling. Use rubbing alcohol to get rid of any residue if needed, I suppose.

Without spoiling anything...Excalibur and Marauders are the most interesting Dawn of X Books, as they pickup from interesting threads and ideas established by Hickman in HOX/POX. Obviously Hickman's main X-men Book and New Mutants are worth their salt.

X-force is ok, a big thing happens in the first issue that could cause some repercussions, but it feels more like an old X-men book than any of the others.

Fallen Angels I didn't pick up, but I've heard lackluster things. *Shrugs*

Speaking of, I Just ordered the HOX/POX HC, along with Descender Vol.2 HC

Thanks for the picture! It's always nice to see people's shelves. :) I do like that you have left yourself some room to expand. Though you are going to have to move a few things around and new things are released.

Black Hammer seems like it should be by Lemire's Descender as they are both sci-fi but the Library edition is tall enough it wouldn't fit in as nicely next to the Image hardcovers. I enjoy trying to work out these sorts of dilemmas when I get new things in. :)

If you've read and enjoyed the New Avengers Omnibus by Bendis the story does continue in OHC volumes.

If you are dabbling in Manga (that looks like Monster on the shelf?) Berserk is all the rage. :p

message 5479: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments Thanks all!! Yes, Black Hammer was a hard one to fit, it’s on kind of a special shelf and where it is lines up dark horse spines with BPRD at least. In my old set all Lemire was together like Remender is all together, maybe I’ll switch back to that.

As for new avengers, it goes into Secret Invasion and then dark reign etc... always expected omnis if that eventually?

And as for manga, I don’t have monster... maybe you saw 20th century boys? And yes I’ve been you all talking about Berserk but I don’t love dark/deep fantasy so held off. I’m sure it’s great but having to start being more critical about buys.

Anyway thanks again for taking a look!

In moving house I dropped my Absolute Blackest Night down the stairs and the bottom has come off the slipcase. Absolute blackest night indeed.

message 5481: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments That is very sad. It took me about 15 trips that were 15 minutes each to get all my books to the new house and I hurt my back twice. One dinged a corner but no drops. I am sorry. RIP absolute.

message 5486: by noelbeast (new)

noelbeast | 489 comments Man, I know things might be exasperated a bit with the holiday rush, but still, F*%# amazon.

Did my usual splurge at the beginning of the month last week and bought 5 Marvel TPBs and one hardcover, all new, directly from amazon. Usually I buy from sellers which is another adventure in and of itself, but these are still in print and amazon had the best deals.

All came beat up. 2 in a box that was clearly reopened for some reason, 2 in another box, 2 in a damn bubble mailer. Bent and mashed corners, damage to spines, even tears. My annoyance with amazon has slowly been building as I’ve noticed less and less packing materials over the last couple of years—I get the waste argument and harm for the environment, but there are good alternatives these days. Still, nothing for any of them. Just toss ‘em in and ship!

Best kicker in this ordeal is that I ordered all of them last Wednesday with a couple of other things, selected free shipping, and didn’t notice until after I ordered that the delivery date was January 24th. A month and a half wait time. Spent far too long on the phone with them to try to resolve an issue that they ultimately “couldn’t fix,” although I suspected the real reason. Everything was in stock, but they ended up suggesting I cancel and reorder. Upon reorder: free shipping delivery—end of January. Spend $13 shipping? Hey, next week! So I even justified spending the extra money, receive them a week later, and get this. I’m such a chump.

F*%# ‘em. At least I can do an easy return. Never again.

message 5487: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments Sorry buddy - yes they are the worst. I ordered the Baltimore omnibus 3 times and every time arrived worse than the previous before I just spent 6 dollars more on amazon. It’s their returns that makes me role the dice a few times a year but their packing is hilarious. I think they literally “throw” things into a box. Apologies to the world from Seattle.

Eh, my anger/annoyance has mostly subsided. Thankfully, found the same books minus one on IST, so way to move forward, just traveling for Christmas and probably best to wait until after the holidays to not risk a box on the doorstep for too long.

Back to more important things, though: digging your set up! I like the shelves, and while I’m pretty ignorant of all things not Marvel, those books on the right are looking awfully pretty all together like that...

message 5489: by Relstuart, Mod+ (new)

Relstuart | 2964 comments Mod
Odd thing, Amazon has been spotted sending some books in boxes wrapped in bubble wrap. I saw some comments and pictures online and I actually got a book that came wrapped in bubble wrap. I actually double checked the box to check if I had accidently ordered from a private seller instead of directly from Amazon, but it was Amazon. Maybe people doing all these returns are causing some changes at some of the warehouses?

Tony, so sorry to hear about your Absolute. :( All of us that have moved probably know the feeling.

message 5490: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments Strangers in Paradise arrived today with the signed bookplate, can’t wait to open it. Surprised it got discounted on IST!! I would have just waited and bought it there, but at least the Moore family shipped it well packaged through FedEx.

message 5491: by noelbeast (new)

noelbeast | 489 comments Hmm, interesting. As I said in my original post, it could be that because of the holidays, part of the problem might be that amazon is just overwhelmed with orders, but hurts all the more that I chose to pay for shipping and experienced this. As compared to free, id like to think that paid shipping should be treated at least a little better, though I really didn’t pay extravagant prices, especially for 3 separate shipments. Will continue to be quite hesitant moving forward.

I’ve never looked at TPBs with IST before, though, so just one more reason to give them even more of my business moving forward.

message 5492: by Sean (new)

Sean Lim | 51 comments @Noelbeast I share your frustration with Amazon! In one of my larger purchases last year (10 books), 2 of my trade paperbacks had their spines totally bent and wrinkled, as another hardcover book jabbed into them during shipping. All in the same brown flimsy box. No bubble wrap. None were individually wrapped or boxed. Just 10 books in a big brown box flying about during transit.

Further purchases proved the brown boxes used were not up to scratch (although there's been no more damaged books since). I was able to request for a refund on the 2 TPBs luckily.

I picked Amazon because it was significantly cheaper to ship to Australia than its peers (approx 20% cheaper than Book Depository). But the risk!

Book Depository on the other hand goes out of its way to bullet proof the books. Usually each one is individually wrapped and boxed! Bad for the environment, but it's always in pristine condition. 1st world problems!

Hmm. I'm not seeing it on IST. Would have preferred the Brooks cover I think but forgot about it.

message 5495: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments The only reason I don’t do some of the cooler variant covers is so the books match better. I assume the Brooks cover has a different spine?

Sometimes, like I think with Descender - the variant of volume 2 matches better with volume 1 standard (I think?). These are the really tough life choices :)

message 5496: by Blindzider, Moderator (new)

Blindzider | 3293 comments Mod
Ahhh, the old spine matching question. In general I like them to match but sometimes variations look good too. I may start a thread on this topic with pictures.

message 5497: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments Spines that don't match infuriate me. I still haven't fully recovered from whatever the hell Marvel did with the 3 War of Kings omnibuses, whereas things like Sixth Gun and Fear Agent look amazing with spines being 90% identical, just different small character placements.

message 5498: by Karsten (new)

Karsten Krieg | 129 comments I kind of hate the Hellboy Library Edition spines, as the characters don't line up. They look great, but my OCD is giving me cardiac arrest whenever I look at the shelf.

As for late 2019 additions.
First and foremost I got Powers Definitive #5. Can somebody tell me why I'm enjoying that book so much? If you haven't checked it out, do it.

In other notes, Strangers in Paradise signed bookplate edition got delivered today alongside with some bargains in the form of Thanos Rising, Invincible Ultimate #12 and Unwritten from Vertigo.

HoX/PoX should arrive soon, as should the Annihilation Omnibus.
