Nickviola | 1019 comments Ok, thats encouraging. I can stop 30% off. But I think I will wait for IST, partially because I trust their shipping more than anyone, but also because I get paid next Tuesday when it should be on IST.

For anyone interested in buying the second HC for Doomsday Clock:

DC Comics will be soliciting the second volume in hardcover of the unauthorised sequel to Watchmen, Doomsday Clock, by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank. And with it, comic book stores (only) will bet getting a free exclusive slipcase to fit both volumes one and two. Sorry comic book stores and Amazon, this is just for comic book stores ordering through Diamond Comic Distributors. Doomsday Clock Part 2 with Free Slipcase is on sale May 6th ($24.99, 232 pages), and is solicited in the upcoming DC Comics Previews. The hardcover collects issues #7-#12 of the series. Doomsday Clock Part 1, released back in October 2019, is sold separately and is currently available for reorder.

That's a good question. The problem is we don't know if IST orders through DCD. I would think so, but don't know for sure. You may want to ask them directly. Doomsday Clock V2 doesn't show up in IST's Coming Soon section so it may be too early to tell.

I read this as IST will have Vol. 2, but not the slip case option. This is one of the few series I’ve been interested in and have held off reading. I have vol1 and will just preorder vol2 with slip case from my LCS; $25 not a big deal.

I will say, I was surprised when DC split this series as 2 HCs; I assumed from the beginning a 12 issue miniseries that was suppose to be a big deal, would just get an omnibus. That being said, I also assumed the series would have been completed in half the time.

message 5607: by Josh (new)

Josh Angel | 48 comments My assumption was that it would go right to OHC, followed by an Absolute edition. I think this is DC milking it for every format they can get. Likely a thick TPB is next, followed by an OHC in a year or two, and then an Absolute once they figure they’ve sold as many of the other formats as they can.

Blindzider | 3293 comments Mod
With DCs new publishing strategy, I think these two small HCs then an absolute later will be about it.

I canceled my Amazon order and ordered here since this is cheaper. And if it is the same company as IST then I can count on proper packing. :)

Anyone read Solo by Oscar Martin?

Darth Bane | 261 comments Oh yeah TOW, IST, DCBS is all the same, so bombproof packaging. Worry not!

I snagged a 2018 copy of the FF volume 1 omnibus earlier today. Hopefully vols 2 and 3 will follow if I like it enough. I've been on a sci-fi kick recently, and will be adding the Adam strange omni and silver surfer by slott soon. If anyone has a line on either I'd be interested!

We t with Amazon for the metabarons box set. They had it for $101. Even with the extra 2% IST could only get me to $111. I’ve never had a problem with Amazon packing when ordering direct from Amazon . . . I think it’s because there is a distribution center near me.

message 5615: by Chen (new)

Chen | 24 comments I've given up on Amazon packing long ago, especially of omnibus size heavy books. It's simply irresponsible to throw books in a much larger box and just put a bubble bag ON TOP. That's how I typically received in last couple of years. I read a comment somewhere that "damaged" books on IST were typically in better shape than Amazon. :)

It is a nice cover and I really enjoyed the contents. I was at a Barnes and Nobles a few months ago and they had two signed copies but they were pretty banged up. If they had a pristine copy I probably would have been tempted to get it.

Nickviola wrote: "So I finally started reading Kill or Be Killed... I’m 4 issues in... and this is not a criticism... but is this Catcher in the Rye with a demon and a gun?"

Interesting thought. Not a connection I thought about. There are some similarities with the self absorption of the main character trying to find his way into what it means to be an adult.

Finished reading the second (and final) hardcover of Descender last night.

Spoiler-ish thoughts:

I liked the ending better than I liked the ending to Sweet Tooth. I'm still not settled on what I think about the Sweet Tooth ending (and it's been well over a year since I last read it). Lemire keeps writings endings very different than anything I would have imagined.

I liked that we see interesting growth and development for some of the secondary characters along with our main characters. Driller's story is a good example of a secondary character that held my interest and attention without detracting from the main characters.

Conveying some truth or issue that provokes thought from your reader is frequently a feature of great writing. That said, in fiction it can be hard to do without being preachy. I'm not sure Lemire totally avoiding preachiness here but the idea that we treat machines like slaves and that treatment is a moral problem, is so foreign to our sensibilities I don't think readers really take it seriously (including the author?). While it is potentially possible to try to draw some sort of parallel to other issues, Lemire doesn't signal that is his intent (or if he did, I missed it).

One of the nice things about many creator owned works is art consistency and we get to have the same artist all the way through. While the art took a little getting used to, I ended up loving it, and it's color palette and style became an integral part of the feel of the story.

While this is the end of this story, there is a continuation that takes place years later, and appears to be centered on the next generation of some of the characters. I will definitely pick up the follow-up story, ideally when a hardcover comes out. :)

Nickviola | 1019 comments I just finished Kill or Be Killed - and Jesus, I have so much to say. Or think about. I’m not sure.

Not REALLY spoilers, but kind of....

Is Brubaker just messing with us? It’s so well told and everyone’s so fully fleshed out, that’s great. Its expectedly beautiful to look at. NYC looks amazing and I’m now homesick. But overall, I haven’t feel like I had so much to say or process about a book in a while. It’s not even subverting expectations, it’s just the motivation yo-yos. Is that fun or annoying? Is the demon a metaphor? Someone give me your thoughts, I just railroaded through the last 10 issues and interested to see what others think about the process and the degree of reality to events or if it doesn’t matter it’s just entertaining to them?

Here’s a copy of my review (no spoilers), that gives an idea of what I think he was trying to say:

Upon opening the cover and reading the first couple pages of this, I immediately felt a sense of comfort and familiarity mixed with excitement. I love this creative team and I love their crime noir stories. The immersive words of Brubaker, the detailed and emotive drawings of Phillips and the nuanced colors of Breitweiser. Together, they create stories that engage me, asking the questions of what does it take to enter a life of crime? Is it multiple steps or one wrong move? Do you have to have it in your genes or is it learned?

This story is probably the most direct I've seen when it comes to these questions. The reader is carried through by the main character as he evolved(devolved?) into a multiple murderer and along the way speaks to the reader, giving insight into what he was thinking and feeling. Brubaker plays with the narrative style, "breaking the fourth wall" so to speak, yet is still able to offer a few surprises. There's also a little bit of commentary on today's society, riddled throughout the issues, each one a new straw being placed on the camel's back. But is that all it takes? Brubaker also touches on the idea of how mental health may or may not play into it.

It's multi-layered and beautifully rendered and I had a hard time putting it down.

message 5626: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments Thanks! I essentially agree with that.

So do you think this was an exploration of what it takes to break: mental illness, loss, being adjacent to mental illness, a lack of place in the world? And therefore specifics of what happened to Dylan matter less than what Brubaker thinks can happen to anyone?

Nickviola wrote: "Thanks! I essentially agree with that.

Yes, I think it's two fold: What does it take for a "normal" person to break? And what happens when a person with mental illness experiences those same triggers?

My wife works in the mental health field, so I understand a little about how various illnesses can affect a person. And while I have my own issues, I think I fall into the "normal" category, but there have been times when I was on the edge of doing something I shouldn't after experiencing multiple triggers that day.

From my perspective, the world has become even more aggravating on every level. I've noticed that I'm having more difficulty dealing with it, as is my wife. Simply driving to a store to get something is fraught with inconsiderate or law-bending people that make life just a little bit harder. All that stuff starts to add up (something I recall Brubaker mentioning.) To me the two responses are: escape, or "eliminate" those triggers (although not necessarily always violently.) All these external things influence people different, and how people react to those is obviously based on our own "mental stability" and upbringing.

If you take it to the extreme, it's a little scary: as if we're all living in a time bomb. At least in the US, the news can be overwhelming and sometimes it does feel as if the country is about to burst, resulting in at least rioting and worst case revolution. On the flip side, just what is keeping us from not stepping over the line?

But now I'm rambling, your thoughts?

message 5628: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments I think those are all interesting points. He definitely became more self aware during the book and I appreciated the musings on the unfairness of our society more as it went on and I generally agree we still have barons of industry only somehow the trumps and facebooks seem worse than the vanderbilts and Roosevelt’s but maybe that just you lose the historical perspective. Farmers getting screwed and people living in corrupt cities is not new so I don’t know if it’s worse or social media and connectivity make everything feel more rampant.

Regarding triggers and boiling points, I’m a doc that takes care of kids with brain tumors and even if they do well often have lingering headaches so I often talk about we all have a point that gives us a headache, you just have a lower headache boiling point and I think emotional and psychologist stresses are similar. My best friends neighbor just starting hallucinating and has schizophrenia in his 30s which is rare but he just had his first baby and a new house and maybe hit a boiling point he just never reached before - who knows. Anyway, as someone who takes care of cancer I always say I couldn’t take care of mental illness and find it much sadder. So maybe this is an exploration of those breaking points and the demon is a metaphor for hitting that point. Thanks for talking this out, make reading it even more enjoyable! Love this community.

message 5629: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments On thing I just thought of is, not to blame the people who have their “break” but the book also shows the effect of one person succumbing to their illness and its affect. A son, to a father, to a son, to a girlfriend. I wouldn’t say it’s anyone’s fault they can’t “manage” things of course, but the trauma you incite, then release, can be absorbed by others and it becomes a chain reaction and maybe that’s the saddest part of the book. The cycle families and loved ones can be entangled in.

message 5630: by Blindzider, Moderator (new)

Blindzider | 3293 comments Mod
Absolutely, I think "boiling point" is an excellent term for it. It's different for everyone, based on genetics, training, mental illness etc.

I'm now middle-aged and finally reached that point of self-reflection and my view of the world/life has changed significantly. To your point about the chain reaction, I completely agree. The other day I was thinking "how much better would the world be, if everyone was always nice to each other?" How much bad behavior is caused by being on the receiving end of abuse, trauma, violence, etc.? And as you said it just continues, affecting each person (especially children.)

Anyway, thank you for your thoughts! I enjoy getting the perspective of others. I've been too caught up in my own growing up.

My Metabarons slipcase set was number 72 IIRC. It was a fun read. I think if the story was new and came out now it wouldn't get the same acclaim that it did on release. But, because it did come out it when it did, it influenced what came after which is part of why it wouldn't stand out as much today.

Finished reading Solo by Oscar Martin. The art and visual world building was very well done. However, the dialog/writing was not done very well. I think the artist needs to team up with a good writer and they could put out something awesome.

I saw some commentary that there will be two more Blacksad stories coming to English eventually. In for those. :)

I have a few slim books on the docket for this weekend: Rumble TPB vol 6, Sonata TPB vol 1, Sharkey the Bounty Hunter by Mark Millar TPB, and Fullmetal Alchemist Fullmetal Ed HC vol 7 (vol 8 comes out next week).

Finished reading The Burning White by Brent Weeks last night. A long fantasy prose novel (just over 900 pages) and the fifth and final book in a series nine years in the making. The fourth book dipped in quality but I was happy that the final book was a good return to form. Definitely engaged at an emotional level as I really cared about what happened to the characters in this book.

Of the newer fantasy authors that started publishing during the last 10 to 15 years, I rate Brent Weeks as easily in the top three.

message 5641: by Josh (new)

Josh Angel | 48 comments I’m a huge fantasy nerd, and I’m glad you enjoyed the Burning White. Unfortunately for me I did not enjoy it at all. I loved the series up until the final third of the Burning White, and I was crushed by the abrupt changes, as if another writer entirely took over and finished the last book. You can check out my goodreads review if you’re curious, but I’ll warn you I am not complimentary. I’m very much in the minority though, and most people really seemed to have loved it. I won’t be reading anything else by Mr Weeks, though again I’m glad you enjoyed it. I wish I had as well.

On the up side I’m enjoying the Witcher book series, and I just reread Locke & Key to prepare for the Netflix show dropping today, and damn that is some fine comics. L&K has been one of my favorites and the reread cemented it in my personal top 10. Such a great series! Here’s hoping the TV adaptation does it justice. *fingers crossed*

I read your review and I totally understand where you are coming from. And, frankly, have to agree you are on to something.

I loved Weeks' first trilogy and I think is it very much superior to the Lightbringer series. I thought the fourth book in the Lightbringer series was a mistake that made the main character much less likable, to the point I found several secondary characters much more interesting. I went into the final book hoping I would care about the characters, especially Kip, the main character again, and I got there. While I don't mind religious/philosophy about how the world works, the conversation about this went on too long and was too much. I'm happy to say the last book was good, likely because I was hoping to care about the series again. But, it's far from great. What made Weeks' first trilogy great, and made me impressed with him as a great author, was the way he handled secrets. The open secrets that you knew as the reader, but not all the characters knew, and then the secrets that came as stunning plot twists that still made sense but I didn't see coming.

The final Lightbringer book didn't have those kind of twists. When I recommend Weeks to a reader, it won't be to read the Lightbringer series.

Weeks has announced he is returning to the world of his original trilogy with his next book. I'm hoping it will be a return to form after his last two books.

Other recent fantasy authors I really enjoyed: Scott Lynch's Gentlemen Bastards series, John Gwynne's Faithful and the Fallen series, and Nicholas Eames' Kings of the Wyld (haven't read the second book). Kings of the Wyld made me laugh out loud. :)

I noted you read most of Terry Goodkind's main fantasy series and gave them all one stars. I did really like The Faithful and the Fallen. The use and musings on meaning in art was an interesting and thought provoking part of that story.

Current fantasy read for me,

Finished book 2 in the Wheel of Time series. I don’t think I enjoy it as much as others and find the story frustrating at times.

Finished the first book in the Witcher series. Enjoy it enough to read the second book.

Finished the second book in the Dune series . . . Loved it.

I really loved the first book of the Dune series and I enjoyed the next couple as well (I think God Emperor of Dune was the last volume I read). I haven't read a ton of sci-fi over the last year.

Nickviola | 1019 comments Metabarons arrived - mine was #1423. Initial thoughts:

1) This is really beautiful, wow. Its hard to put a finger on why, but seems like even higher quality than the Incal slipcase. Its the same height and the same style of slipcase so they look nice together.

2) Having it in 2 hardcover books inside is really nice. The page count is 525 compared to the 325 for the Incal so its more pages and obviously extra hardcover material being 2 books instead of 1.

3) A little nitpicky, but the last one was marketed as "deluxe oversized" and this one is marketed as "the definitive collection", the Incal has the title on the slipcase spin while this just has artwork. Seems like this would have been easy to coordinate being the same, either each have just artwork or artwork with the titles or call out they are both "definitive collections". Not that big a deal. I am including a new collection photo - nothing too special changed except I display my Artifact Editions a little better and you can see the Incal and Metabarons slipcases next to each other on Bookcase 2 Row 2 toward the photo center:
