The goal of this challenge is to read 26 middle-grade books during 2020, one for each letter of the alphabet. Some letters are trickier than others! If you need inspiration, scroll through this thread (participants will be updating their lists throughout the year), scan past years' lists, or scroll through these middle-grade alphabet lists.

Steps:

1. Create a comment on this thread.
2. Copy, paste, and edit the alphabet set in the first post below.
3. Update your comment throughout the year, adding the books you finish during 2019.

Guidelines:

1. Titles need to match a letter of the alphabet. Use the "add book/author" button to create links to the books here on Goodreads.
2. Drop "A," "An," and "The" from titles. For example, A Single Shard would be listed for S, and The Field Guide would be listed for F.
3. If your title begins with a number, convert it to a letter by spelling it out. For example, 100 Cupboards and The 11:11 Wish would both be listed for O.
4. It's okay to add multiple titles under each letter, but there's no extra credit.
5. Only list middle-grade titles. No picture books, YA, or adult books about kids.
6. You can add a rating and review link. For example ***** My review is here.
7. For an added challenge, see if you can read your books in alphabetical order.
8. Have fun!

SaraKat's 2020 A to Z List:
A: As Chimney Sweepers Come to Dust Part of the Flavia De Luce Mystery series. My least favorite of the series so far. A Long Walk to Water: Based on a True Story- wonderful!
B: Be Prepared-memoir of a girl from an immigrant family.
C: Charlotte's Web A classic that I hadn't read in decades!
D: Dog Man: Lord of the Fleas- super funny graphic novel,
E: Echo- BOTM for October and wonderful story!
F: Flush- environmental activist message, dark at times, Fair Weather- nice historical fiction with great family relationships
G: The Grave's a Fine and Private Place- Flavia De Luce series, she solves a murder while on holiday, The Golden Tresses of the Dead- Flavia De Luce series, she solves a murder at her sister's wedding, last of the series so far! The Ghosts of Tupelo Landing Sequel to Three Times Lucky. Weirdly supernatural.
H: Hoot- environmental theme with a lovely family dynamic, Henry Huggins-less interesting than the Ramona series
I: Invisible Emmie- Illustrated novel about a girl with social anxiety who is suddenly in the limelight.
J: James and the Giant Peach
K: Kira-Kira
L: The Last Panther
M: The Mostly Invisible Boy- Book of the Month for June, The Mysterious Benedict Society-a bit disappointing
N: No More Dead Dogs- sooooooo funny!
O: The Odds of Getting Even Third in the Three Times Lucky Series and the best in my opinion. I adore Mo. Olive's Ocean Eh.
P: Pashmina-a rather simple graphic novel about an Indian-American girl
Q: Querido Senor Henshaw- spanish version of Cleary's Dear Mr. Henshaw.
R: Ramona the Pest A blast from the past. Beverly Cleary really wrote the mind of a kindergartner so well! Ramona and Her Father- Ramona bonds with her dad while he is out of work, Ramona the Brave- Ramona has to brave 1st grade, Restart- BOTM for January, bully gets amnesia and starts over- Loved it!, Ramona Quimby, Age 8- another good one in the Ramona series, Ramona's World, Ramona Forever, Root Beer Candy and Other Miracles-BOTM for August
S: Serafina and the Twisted Staff- second of the series, creepy and scary and wonderful , Serafina and the Splintered Heart- third in the series, just as good, Serafina and the Seven Stars-the epic finale-for-now of the series, The Strangers- BOTM for March, Skies Like These- love letter to the simple, rural life and accepting yourself, Suffragette: The Battle for Equality- excellent nonfiction with lovely illustrations, Sweep: The Story of a Girl and Her Monster: BOTM for September
T: Thrice the Brinded Cat Hath Mew'd- Flavia De Luce solves another mystery involving a popular children's author
U: The Unadoptables-historical fiction with fun Dutch elements.
V: The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street- BOTM for December
W: The Wild Robot-BOTM for January, a bit disappointing, Wonderstruck- lovely story about two deaf characters finding themselves family and a place in the world after tragedy. Wish- BOTM for April, pretty good
X: X Marks the Spot: Treasure Island
Y: Young Star Travelers-an anthology of space travel involving middle grade aged children.
Z: Zinnia and the Bees

Jemima's 2020 A to Z List:
A:
B:
C: The Conspiracy of Magic 4*, only because of a death of a major character, otherwise 5.
D: A Dog for Lockdown 2nd in Clare O'Beara's Irish Lockdown series, and probably even better the my P entry - more diverse.
E:
F: The Firefly Warriors Club Maybe boys from Texas will give it five stars, but it's an action-packed read for anyone.
G:A Girl Called Justice 'read' by the author on Facebook so counted as an audiobook! 5*
H:
I: The Ickabog read online
J:
K:
L:
M: The Mostly Invisible Boy 4 stars.
N:
O: Of Salt and Shore publication delayed to October, but 4+ stars from me
P: A Pony for Quarantine by Clare O'Beara - absolutely spot on for Covid, and it's a pony book! 5 stars.
Q:
R:
S:The Star Agency a good bit of scifi for MG, with tedious bits for adults. Salt by Helen Laycock, a fun holiday adventure with a mystery thrown in. Set in a bygone time, but not actually historical!
T:
U: Umbrella Mouse to the Rescue by Anna Fargher, due out in June. I want to read the first one, Umbrella Mouse, too.
V:
W: What Stars are Made Of 5* and candidate for Book of the Year for me
X:
Y:
Z:

I have now read more than last year! Hooray!
Update: I just added four more books and they were all for letters I already had, even though I read them for my personal A to Z. How does that happen? And then I pressed 'edit' and the whole list disappeared!

I have scheduled to read The Valley of Secrets by Charmain Hussey and Young Joan by Barbara Dana.
I can't help you with Q and X. I need a Z.

If you click the title at the top of the thread ( GMGR Challenges) you can get to the list of posts in this section. There are suggestions for several of the tricky letters.

Why did I *ever* think J was a difficult letter? This month, I'm attempting to read the entire Junie B. Jones series. That means J x 28. XD

Sarakat, I was browsing for As and noticed you'd put A Long Walk to Water there instead of L (which you need!)

I shouldn't ask this, because I have too many books I want to read already, but what are your top 3-5 books, Carmel?

message 44: by Carmel (new)

Carmel | 72 comments My favourites so far this year are (not in order of preference): Dog Man and The Beast of Buckingham Palace because they are both very humourous with lots of laugh out loud moments.
The Deepest Breath because it is so beautifully written and reassuring. The main character is questioning her sexuality and the issue is dealt with in an age appropriate way - wish I had access to a book like this when I was in 6th grade.
Lark was winner of this year's Carnegie Medal (very well deserved). It is a very special, beautifully written story of survival in harsh conditions with realistic, amazing characters. It is short and a real page turner and one that will be devoured by many, including reluctant readers.
I'd highly recommend any of the titles on my list that I've rated with 5 stars.

Becky Avella (beckyavella) | 22 comments I’m really enjoying this challenge and only have one more letter to go to finish...the dreaded letter X. Unfortunately, the book I chose to read for it is boring me to tears, and I think I need to abandon it and I’ve already used up others I know of in past challenges. Does anyone have an “X” title they enjoyed? I’d be really grateful for a suggestion. Thanks! 😊

Thank you, Jemima. I found the audiobook for Boy X and it feels like it will be exactly what I was looking for to finish strong. :)
