I have collected every side of the story and every piece of evidence on case number 13. Now, in this file, you will find all you need to follow the dark adventures of Nick, Carter, and Angelo, three boys who possess an unhealthy obsession with monsters, in a town so grisly, so horrific—

Ahem. Well, Nick, it is a scary story. In this volume alone, there are voodoo queens, graveyards—even the dreaded Zombie King himself.
Yeah, but there's also the part where Angie gets mashed potatoes all in her face, and the part where I use my cool zombie powers to—
All right, point taken. Now, if you don't mind . . .
You hold in your hands a very dangerous, very funny record, detailing the hilarious adventures of three boys who have an awesome obsession with monsters. This is the first volume. Read on if you dare. . . .

In the book Nick, Carter, and Angelo were getting ready for Halloween. But Nick’s Aunt Lenore died. Nick never knew his Aunt but he still had to go to her funeral. Since he have to go to her funeral he will miss his Halloween When he arrived at his Aunt Lenore house Nick thought the house was a little strange looking and the furniture was little old. While Nick in the house he goes downstairs and see some voodoo ingredients. Then he figures out his Aunt was a voodoo queen. During the funeral a lady was looking at Nick the whole time and after that a guy named Mazoo was acting strange. Mazoo was telling Nick stuff and asking Nick questions. Mazoo was also acting like he knew Aunt Lenore was a voodoo queen and Nick thought Mazoo was a bokor. After the funeral nick followed a cat that lived in Aunt Lenore house to a graveyard. At the graveyard Nicks finds an amulet that he thought was a gris-gris and then puts on. But the doors close and Nick pass out. The next day nick wakes up in the bed at Aunt Lenore’s and Nick’s house he started acting strange. A couple of days later Nick, Carter, and Angelo find out that Nick is turning into a zombie.
I like the book because of the adventures, and it was funny. I think the book was for mostly boys and for ages 11+. Certain parts of the book were not that great and a little boring to read. But I think it was a good book.
I loved this book! Absolutely loved it! My 11 year old, who reads well but would rather do something else, gobbled this book up in 2 days. The characters remind me of great boy character movies like Super 8 and Goonies and it had the perfect mix of creepy grossness that makes for a pleasant afternoon. Easily a 5 star book.
Kinda funny story. How the main character Nick dealing with ancient curse that make him turn into zombie. Lucky Nick have another 2 close friend that always stand with him no matter what happens. Suitable for primary students
I will be the first to admit that zombie stories are usually not my cup of tea but I love J. Scott Savage as a person and an author. So when his ARC came on tour in the mail, I picked it up curious...and began to read...and read...and read. Could not put the book down! The thing caught me completely off guard with its hilarious laugh out loud moments and brilliantly crafted characters-- the "three monsterteers."
It's close to Halloween and the three of them have the best costumes ever cooked up. However, Nick's Aunt Lenore has just died and he's off to Louisiana for the funeral leaving all plans of trick or treating behind. But there are secrets and creepiness awaiting down in the bayou. Voodoo secret supplies, a mysterious black cat, a hidden family crypt and crocodiles, oh my!
This is absolutely a book you do not want to miss. Carve out an entire day to devour it and then hide it from your children, because if they are anything like mine they'll want to steal it. I was blown away by the clever writing and fun paranormal history elements. Pre-order now!!!! Thanks to J. Scott Savage for sharing his genius with us.
I read this book with my seven and four-year-old after convincing them they'd like it. But the truth is, I wanted to read it. We TRIED to read one chapter a night, but it ended up being between three to five chapters. My seven-year-old would have preferred to stay up all night to have me keep reading. This book was not only funny, spooky, and exciting, it was also really clever. I've just got to share my favorite part:
"As Angelo continued to talk, Nick thought that he'd never realized how intelligent his friend was..." "Nick's stomach growled again. 'You're really smart,' he said." "'What?' Angelo looked up from his book." "Nick licked his lips. 'I'll bet your brain is huge.'" "'What's wrong with you?' Carter asked, taking his hand out of the bag." "Nick blinked. 'What do you mean?' Why were his friends staring at him so strangely?" "'You're drooling,' Carter said."
Ha! I just love that part, and it's just one of many clever ways the author lets you figure things out. And he does it in such humorous ways. J. Scott Savage is quickly becoming a favorite author of not only my kids, but me--and that's saying something. I typically don't read middle-grade books. But for books this good, I'm willing to break genres. :-)
Case File 13: Zombie Kid is middle grade, in the same vein as Marion Jensen's Almost Super. In fact, I thought a lot about Marion's book as I read this one. The story centers around three friends who love monsters and how one slowly becomes one. We get a description of a zombie transformation from the perspective of the zombified person, and it's amusing to consider what that would actually entail.
It was a fast read/listen. It flowed smoothly and held just enough tension and fright to pique the interest of middle grade readers without being too scary. And, since it is jr. high school kids, there's also some references to the sounds our bodies make about which kids of this age spend a lot of time thinking and discussing. Whenever I find a book for children that I enjoy reading, I recommend it, and I recommend this one.
My 9 year old and I read this together and it was a riot. Each night she looked forward to reading more... and it was a great bribe for getting her room cleaned. ZOMBIE KID is funny, clever and suspenseful--perfect reading for the middle grade audience and their parents alike.
Even though I did not finish the book it was a great book. The Three main charectars are teenage kids and they love holloween. But there trick or treating dreams are crushed when one of them has to go down to luisianna for 2 days.
Zombies, three humorous boy best friends, and a mystery to solve. This book has it all! Case File 13, Zombie Kid involves Angelo, Nick and Carter, best friends who love monsters and Halloween. This Halloween is different though; at the last minute, Nick’s great-aunt passes away and Nick must go with his parents to the funeral in Louisiana. When in Louisiana, Nick encounters an amulet on Halloween that is cursed and brings it home. Once at home, Nick notices many changes; he begins to reek of a horrible smell, he cannot feel pain, and suddenly he starts to lose appendages! He is becoming a zombie! With the help of Angelo and Carter, the three boys solve the mystery of the amulet by traveling to an undead world to free other zombies and are able to turn Nick back into a human. This book is very creative and entertaining. The plot, which sounds over-the-top, is surprisingly very well-written. For a children’s book, the length (which is over 250 pages) might seem daunting, however, J. Scott Savage keeps the storyline flowing and it moves seamlessly from event to event. All of the pieces come together in the end for a solid closure. At the beginning of each chapter, there is a picture of Nick and his body changes slightly. This gives the reader a prediction of what events might occur within the chapter. There are humorous elements as well. The titles of each chapter say things such as “Do not read this chapter before going to bed!” or “This part is even weirder than the last”. It is a great story that includes comical characters and an interesting adventure.
In the book Case File 13 by J.Scott savage There are three boys and their names are Nick,Carter and Angelo, and they are obsessed about all things about monsters. You would probably guess that their favorite holiday would be Halloween and they are trying to solve a mystery in their hometown. Every Halloween they get to show off their monster knowledge with elaborate homemade costumes. Nick went to their aunt's house (who may have been a voodoo queen) and threw a major wrench into the boys’ Halloween plans. This leaves Nick with a cursed amulet that turns him into a real life zombie!
The reason I like this book is because I like monsters, especially *zombies.* I like how Nick never gives up on his quest to turn back into a human. When Nick tells his friends that he is a zombie, they say “this is awesome” at first. Then Nick gets out of hand, and the boys have to go on an adventure to reverse the curse. Why I think people should read this book is if you like monsters than Case File 13 is the book for you. This is what happens when there is a kid named Nick. He loves monsters. so do his friends. Every Halloween they dress up in elaborate homemade costumes. but it took a turn this Halloween. He took a surprise trip to his aunt's house (who may have been a voodoo queen) and got cursed with an amulet that turned him into a zombie. At first when he told his friends they said this is awesome, but Nick got out of control. So, they had to go on an epic quest to reverse the curse. So if you're a super big monster fan, I think this book is for you and you should check it out.
Zombie Kid take place in a small town in Colorado where three best friends Nick,Carter and Angelo are completely fascinated with monsters. Just before Halloween of their 6th year the three boys are preparing to go Trick or Treating. They call themselves the ''Three Monsterteers'' Their mission was to fill and ENTIRE shopping cart full of candy. Little did the boys know Nick was going to have to leave because his Aunt Lenore recently died.
At the funeral Nick found a lustrous Red ruby surrounded in 24k gold.It was an amulet. Instantly Nick put it around his neck. Slowly he grew weaker,His heart rate dropped to 1 bpm, and his body temperature dropped to 42 degree's fahrenheit. So the ''Monsterteer's'' traded long and far to find a underworld that was housing one of the most dangerous creature on planet Earth. The Zombie King. So the overall theme so far is saving Nick from getting enslaved by the Zombie King, And the Main Idea so far is trying to stop the cursed amulet from changing Nick. Then Nick realized he never should've touched his aunt Lenore's amulet.
This book by J. Scott Savage is about three young friends, Nick, Carter and Angelo, find themselves fighting off zombies and other scary creatures in this eerily funny story. As the boys plan there Halloween (Zombie costumes of course) Nick instead finds himself attending the funeral of his Great Aunt Lenore. While in his Aunt's rundown old house, Nick discovers what he thinks are his Aunt's voodoo supplies! Could she be a voodoo queen? One thing leads to another (Nick actually becomes a zombie) and soon the friends are trying to do everything they can to turn Nick back into a human before it is too late. The story starts off great, bogs down in the middle and picks up speed at the end. A very good adventure story with just a touch of scariness to satisfy the monster in all of us red the story read the story to find out i they live to see daylight again or if they all die by getting eaten by a zombie. The reason it gets 3 stars is because i thought it would be more how do i say, scary? It did not feel like i was there. I recommend this book to Raymond and Carlos. -Ashton
Zombie kid was a good book. The author J. Scoot Savage wonderful job on this book. The lexile level is 720. The book is about a kid and he finds voodoo and he wears it and he starts turning into a zombie and he friends try to help him to reverse the spell that turned him into a zombie.
The theme is scary because his grandmother died and the jewel that he has around his next turned him into a zombie. He is trying to find a way to make the spell go away so he can be a normal kid again. (p.9 Did It scare you. They stopped and waited for the light to turn green so they could cross.) His friends are scared for him and they want to break the spell.
I liked the book. I recommend it for kids that are 7th grade because it wasn’t too hard to read. I also recommend it for people that like mystery books.
Zombie kid ( Case File 13 # 1) is about three preteens boys, Nick, Angelo, and Carter. When Nick aunt dies he is forced to go to her funeral. He searches around and finds a strange amulet. Then something strange happens.
This book is a very adventurous, with strange twists. It has a very creative theme to it. It has some silly things that made me laugh out loud. I thought that some of background characters had more potential to make a more interesting story. Personally, I thought it was a good book.
I listened to the audio book with my 9 year old son and we both loved it.
First, the narrator was excellent.
There honestly weren't any boring parts. Every chapter ended with us wanting to move on to the next to find out what would happen next. We love the different personalities of the characters and I personally adore the one constantly eating candy.
In the end, I was so nervous that the kids were done for, but some really fun things happened and the story was resolved in an entertaining and satisfying way.
We can't wait to read the next ones! This was such a great read.
Okay, I am NOT a horror/zombie sort of person. I was worried I'd wimp out five pages in and have to put it down.
But I found this book surprisingly entertaining. Apparently, I can do middle grade horror.
I LOVED the voice in this story. The boys sooo totally sounded like boys and I was laughing at their stupidity. The other characters were well written too. I was easily able to fall into that world and immerse myself into the story.
With lots of zombies and creepiness, this book is wonderful for people who like horror books, but I didn't like it. The characters weren't very interesting and didn't act very natural, the creepiness didn't make any sense and the "plot twists" weren't surprising at all. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone except those who voodoo and zombie books.
I really liked this book. I’m not much of a horror or scary book reader, but the boys’s humor broke the creepiness up enough to leave me laughing most of the time. And the characters really did act like 12-year-old boys. I was immersed in this book almost immediately. I’ll definitely read another one.
This was SUCH an easy 5 stars! We both loved reading it and so many times I was torn between just wanting to keep reading and getting this one to sleep...GAH! Can't wait to get our hands on the next one and our amazing library had kindly seen to making that happen... just a waiting game 'til it arrives now 😆
AAAAAAAA this book felt like a breath of fresh aif after so many classical and bad books. Yes its a kids / early teen book but goddamn i enjoyed it. The characters were written so nicely, the story didnt have any plotholes and it made you want to help the main characters. And not to forget the classic boys vs girls drama haha
It was fun and clean. The plot doesn’t really start till about 80% of the way through and even then it’s basically an afterthought- most of the book is about a kid being a zombie and slowly figuring that out and using it to play pranks and such. With a better editor to give it some improved pacing it would have been 4 stars.
Book 1 of File 13 series. These books remind me of Monsterious or Goosebumps. The writing is fun and age appropriate. Standard dealing with bullies and the excitement of Halloween. Monsters and the mystic abound but the best is loyalty and friendship. A fun adventure story that’s not too creepy for those middle grade readers.
My wee man completely and utterly LOVED this!!! And what's more I really enjoyed reading it too - WINNING!!! I honestly just wanted to keep reading when it was time for lights out and food a few times haha. Totally recommend for the smaller scare fans in your life ;)
I really protested when my elementary school teacher daughter suggested this for my reading time with my 11 year old grandson. I’m not a Zombie fan at all. But I really enjoyed it and so did he. It read easily which is important because he doesn’t like to read. It was entertaining.
