I'll be starting Dorothy Hughes' Dread Journey tomorrow -- a perfect title for reading on an airplane.

I liked it in the beginning too, but for me it really took off after the first 100-200 pages.

Araych | 676 comments Countdown City Countdown City (The Last Policeman, #2) by Ben H. Winters by Ben Winters

The Last Policeman 2, can be read as stand-alone but I recommend reading the series in order. OK, so the world will end in 77 days (really--- big meteor) and ex-detective Henry Palace is asked by an old friend to find her missing husband. So it's a dystopian sci-fi mystery. Not quite as good as the first in the series so it only gets 4.9 stars.

Zoe Radley | 558 comments Currently reading tales of mystery and imagination by Edgar Allan Poe.... I feel his gothic tales of terror and doom are a lot more intriguing and less wordy and pretentious than his detective stories don’t get me wrong the murders on the rue morgue is great but the other two are well a bit king winded and dull. But his gothic tales are exquisite.

I've read one book in this series; it's an unusual concept, investigating crimes when the world is about to end. The book was okay though.

Finished Swan Peak by James Lee Burke. Plots are repetitive but the prose remains sublime. Robicheaux is still well worth checking out even though this is the 17th entry in the series. Rating - 4/5

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9970 comments Rather Be the Devil Rather Be the Devil (Inspector Rebus, #21) by Ian Rankin by Ian Rankin

Inspector Rebus is retired, but he still finds ways to investigate cases. While Rebus is looking into a 40-year-old cold case, fresh crimes also catch his attention.

Always a pleasure to visit with Rebus, but the plot is very convoluted. 3 stars

I finished Dread Journey by Dorothy Hughes yesterday afternoon. This is one of those books where what actually happens (plot, etc) takes a back seat to excellence in prose and what's happening beneath the surface of this story. I'd say that someone should make a movie based on this book, but it's largely interior so it wouldn't translate to screen very well.

MJ The Perfect Husband (Quincy & Rainie, #1) by Lisa Gardner

I am late to discover this awesome author. I have read, and loved, several of her books. This one annoyed me a little bit. The killer Jim Beckett reminded me of Jason from Friday 13th. No one can stop him. He was smarter than every other law officer. Has the ability to impersonate other people on the drop of dime, change his appearance, etc.. Annoying. As I write this review I already purchased her book Look for Me and I cannot wait to read it.
