Araych | 676 comments The Midnight Plan of the Repo Man The Midnight Plan of the Repo Man (Ruddy McCann #1) by W. Bruce Cameron by W. Bruce Cameron

Ruddy McCann #1. Repo agent (want to get back on your feet? miss a couple of car payments) in a small Michigan town gets pulled into investigating a murder because somehow the dead guy ends up in his head. Very light and enjoyable mystery with lots of humor. Totally original and I liked it a lot. 4 stars.

I enjoyed this one, too, and it's sequel. It's kind of nice to take a break from the serious and darkness of the traditional murder investigation stories.

Finished The Blackhouse by Peter May. Loner cop with troubled past + atmospheric setting. That formula is popular these days but this one still remains fun. Rating - 3/5

I know. To me 3 or 3.5 stars is a book that's perfectly worth reading; 4 or 5 stars (for me) indicates something more special or extraordinary.

I think you are one of the more fair reviewers here and your idea of rating things on a sliding scale is the right one. A lot of users here think 3 is outright bad (for me it means middling) which leads to a gross over rating of books on the site.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9970 comments Vertigo 42 Vertigo 42 (Richard Jury, #23) by Martha Grimes by Martha Grimes

In this 23rd book in the 'Richard Jury' series, a classic movie and two well-known novels provide clues when the Detective Superintendent investigates a number of deaths.

Okay mystery, but it's always fun to visit with the recurring characters. 3 stars

I agree, a 3 is a good read, nothing wrong with that!

Araych | 676 comments World of Trouble World of Trouble (The Last Policeman, #3) by Ben H. Winters by Ben H. Winters

The Last Policeman #3, series absolutely should be read in order. I started out hating Hank because he made what I thought was a very stupid decision to leave a woman who cared for him, but I was wrong. He has to be what he is. This is a unique and rewarding series, highly recommended. 5 stars.

Barbara | 1 comments Picked up a book called "The Hunting Party" - I was looked for a good "trapped in a remote location" thriller. Began to read and saw that it was one of my pet peeves in writing, books where the whole story is written in the present tense.

Amos Decker, a former police detective who now works for the FBI, uses his photographic memory to help solve crimes. Decker certainly needs it in this book, which has some bizarre killings.

Good mystery. 3 stars
