Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9970 comments Fortunate Son Fortunate Son by Walter Mosley by Walter Mosley

A young black boy and a young white boy are step-brothers in an upper middle-class home, but the death of a parent sends them in very different directions - one to typical success and one to the streets and drug pushers.

But sometimes people can draw satisfaction from difficult circumstances.

Good story. 3.5 stars

Deb Jones (feisty56) | 99 comments Finished the third in author Elly Griffiths Ruth Galloway series, The House at Sea's End.

The House at Sea's End by Elly Griffiths

This is a nice series for when you're looking for something a little less gritty. It's character-driven and has some decent suspense, but no sordid details of violence.

I think I read through 7 or 8 of the Murder Ladies by Patterson. I became so tired of his 1 - 2 page chapters in all of his books that I stopped reading them.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9970 comments The Vengeance of Mothers The Journals of Margaret Kelly & Molly McGill A Novel by Jim Fergus The Vengeance of Mothers: The Journals of Margaret Kelly & Molly McGill: A Novel by Jim Fergus

This sequel to One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd describes what happens after the army massacres a tribe of Cheyenne Indians and the white women who live among them.
Lets say the surviving white women don't take it well....can you say 'cut off their bollocks.'

The book can be read as a standalone. Good story. 3.5 stars

message 300: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 1 comments Just finished the latest anthology of Sherlock Holmes stories by MX Publishing. Apparently this project started as a one and done a few years ago, but the books got popular and they now have about 18 in the series. As with any anthology, not just Holmes, some stories are better than others - a few of the writers really come off reading like Conan Doyle.
I was loaned a copy of a Shari Lapena book - An Unwanted Guest (I think that's the title) - started reading and saw it had one of my major pet peeves - okay, it's just me, but for me it makes the book unreadable - the whole book was written in the present tense. I get that this is popular, but to me it's just weird and distracting.
