January Scavenger Challenge - National Kazoo Day

READ: 7/7

✔1. Alabama Vest of Macon, Georgia, made the first Kazoo in the 1840's. Actually, he conceived the Kazoo, and had Thaddeus Von Clegg, a German-American clockmaster make it to his specifications. It was first presented to the world at the Georgia State Fair in 1852.
🎵 Read a book in which at least one character attends a fair/festival/carnival; tell us who and what kind of event OR a book originally published in a year ending in 0; tell us the year
Witch on Ice - Cat Larson (ice festival) 1/1

✔2. It is believed that the Kazoos closest relative is the African version of a mirliton, a group of instruments characterized by having a vibrating membrane. The African horn-mirliton was used to distort voices at tribe gatherings.
🎵 Read a book set in Africa; tell us where OR a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in HORNMIRLITON; 2-word minimum
Heroes of Time Legends - Wayne D. Kramer 1/7

✔3. A Kazoo is a tube-shaped musical instrument, with both ends of the tube uncovered. One end of the tube is flattened, while the other end of the tube has a small circular opening. Around two thirds down the instrument there is another circular hole, leading to a small chamber, where a wax membrane is situated. The membrane, which is fixed around the edges by a circular cylinder (ring), is free to oscillate.
🎵 Read a book with a musical instrument shown prominently on the cover; post the cover OR a book with a Z somewhere in the author's name; post a link to the author's GR page
Nine Elms - Robert Bryndza 1/30

✔4. Kazoos can be made of plastic, metal, wood or other materials. Each has unique sound qualities, but the tone quality of a Kazoo is determined by the quality of the membrane or resonator. The membrane is the key point of the Kazoo. This membrane gives the Kazoo its distinction from other horn section instruments. Some have called the Kazoo a "singing drum."
🎵 Read a book whose title contains OO OR a book with a character who works in manufacturing; tell us who and their job
Devil Days in Deadwood - Ann Charles 1/19

✔5. Commercial production of the Kazoo didn't begin until 1912. Manufacturing was started by Emil Sorg, a traveling salesman, in Western New York. Sorg joined up with Michael McIntyre, a Buffalo tool and die maker. Production moved to Eden, NY where the factory museum remains today as a working museum.
🎵 Read a book set between 1900 and 1930 (inclusive); tell us when OR a book by an author whose last name contains the prefix Mc (will also accept Mac as long as it's a prefix and not simply the first three letters of the last name); post a link to the author's GR page
The Corpse at the Crystal Palace - Carola Dunn (set in 1928) 1/28

✔6. Other manufacturers of Kazoos tried to get in on the sales market, but McIntyre got a patent for his product in 1923, limiting competition. Today, Kazoobie Kazoos, America's largest manufacturer, sells nearly 1 million Kazoos every year.
🎵 Read a book by an author whose first and last initials are the same; post a link to the author's GR page OR a book with two of these in the total page count: 1, 2, 3, 9; tell us how many pages
Tales of the Peculiar - Ranson Riggs 1/26

✔7. Kazoos are easy to play: Don't blow into a Kazoo; instead, simply hum into the big end of the Kazoo. By singing or speaking through the Kazoo, the player creates an air current which makes the membrane vibrate and thus creates a summing, "nasal" sound. By wholly or partially covering up the membrane hole, a large variety of sounds can be created.
🎵 Read a book with a character who is a musician; tell us who and what they play OR a book that was easy to read; briefly explain
Reading Up a Storm - Eva Gates (quick and easy cozy mystery) 1/14

Witch on Ice by Cat Larson Heroes of Time Legends Murdoch's Choice by Wayne D. Kramer Nine Elms (Kate Marshall, #1) by Robert Bryndza Devil Days in Deadwood (Deadwood Humorous Mystery) by Ann Charles The Corpse at the Crystal Palace (Daisy Dalrymple, #23) by Carola Dunn Tales of the Peculiar by Ransom Riggs Reading Up a Storm (Lighthouse Library Mystery #3) by Eva Gates

May Scavenger Challenge - Inverted Jenny

✔️1) The only known sheet of Inverted Jenny stamps was printed on May 10, 1918.
Task: Read a book set during the First World War OR read a book published in May of any year or the tenth of any month, tell us when.
A Court of Thorns and Roses - Sarah J. Maas (pub May 5, 2015) 5/26

Task: Read a book where someone or something is missing (tell us what or who) OR read a book where someone could afford to spend $1,593,000 (on anything from a house to a postage stamp, doesn't have to be a luxury purchase, tell us who).
The Book Stops Here - Ian Sansom (mobile library van is missing) 5/14

✔️3) The Inverted Jenny is considered to be the most famous error in American philately.
Task: Read a book where someone makes a SPECTACULAR error (using spoiler tags, tell us who and what) OR read a book whose title contains at least four letters found in the word philately -- A, An and The do **NOT** count. November Scavenger Challenge - Thanksgiving Foods

READ: 7/7

✔ 2. While most of us couldn't imagine not having this item among all the Thanksgiving goodies, potatoes did not feature in early feasts. Potatoes did not become a North American crop until the 1700's.
🦃 Read a book that takes place in Massachusetts OR read a book whose title starts with a letter in POTATO; all words count!
Tattooed - Pamela Callow 11/11

✔ 3. The classic green bean casserole didn't make its appearance onto the Thanksgiving table until the 1950's. A Campbell's Soup employee, Dorcas Reilly created "Green Been Bake" to promote and increase sales of Campbell's Cream of Mushroom Soup.
🦃 Read a book with a green cover; remember to post the cover OR read a book that takes place during the 1950's.
A Witch Too Late - Paula Lester & M.E. Harmon 11/27

✔ 4. Technically, there is a difference between stuffing and dressing, although the terms are used interchangeably. Stuffing is cooked (stuffed) inside the turkey while dressing is cooked in a separate dish and then used to 'dress' the bird.
🦃 Read a book whose title contains any word ending in ING OR read a book that is either marked "Cooking" or involves a lot of cooking (i.e. restaurant or caterer).
Too Hot To Touch - Louisa Edwards (chef) 11/27

✔ 5. According to a 2020 YouGov Poll, mashed potatoes were the clear favorite of most Americans. Seventy-eight percent list the spud as their chosen Thanksgiving food.
🦃 Read a book that has a 7 or an 8 in its total page count; remember to tell us the page count OR read a book that is a favorite for you (re-read your favorite book, or read something in your favorite genre or by your favorite author); tell us how your book fits.
Daybreak - Cheree Alsop (277 pages) 11/11

✔ 6. Another food not present at early Thanksgivings was the sweet potato. Of course, the sweet potato was eventually part of the feast. We have the French to thank for developing that sweet, ooey-gooey marshmallow topping.
🦃 Read a book with a French character OR read a book with something fluffy on its cover; remember to post the cover.
Gone with the Twins - Kylie Logan 11/5

✔ 7. Most people blame tryptophan for the post-feast drowsiness, but in fact chicken contains more tryptophan than turkey. The most likely cause of languor after eating the Thanksgiving bounty is simply overindulgence.
🦃 Read a book whose author's first and last initials are in TRYPTOPHAN OR read a book that makes you drowsy.
Nathaniel - John Saul (very slow) 11/20

✔ 8. Shockingly, pumpkin pie was not part of original Thanksgivings. But, the pilgrims did make pumpkin custard for dessert. Milk and honey were combined and poured into a hollowed out pumpkin shell. The confection was then roasted to perfection.
🦃 Read a book with any type of dessert on its cover; remember to post the cover OR read a book in which food is prepared outdoors; briefly explain what and where.
Blood of an Exile - Brian Naslund 11/20
(MC is on a quest and catches and cooks game in the forest)

Barbara ★ | 9252 comments Olympics #38 - Pairs' Figure Skating

READ: 4/5

1. Pair skating today is arguably the most technically difficult discipline in figure skating. Pair skaters do the same jumps and spins as single skaters, sometimes with fewer revolutions, but timing is far more critical because they must execute moves in perfect unison. Good pairs skaters demonstrate symmetry and parallel flow across the ice.
Read a book whose total page count contains a pair of the same numbers (220 or 232 work; numbers do not have to be together) OR read a book featuring a couple who work together well; tell us who and briefly how.
Lord of the Vampires - Gena Showalter (288 pages) 11/4

2. The pairs event combines the athleticism of singles skating with the challenge of unison and the acrobatics of overhead lifts and throws. Shadow skating (in which partners perform identical maneuvers some distance apart) and mirror skating (in which the pair’s moves are in opposite directions and mirror each other) are aspects of pairs skating and contribute to the overall effect of a program.
⛸ Read a book with a shadow, mirror, or reflection on its cover; post the cover OR read a book read a book with opposite words in its title.

3. Like singles skating, pairs competitions include a short program and a free skate, with each segment receiving a technical score and a component score, and the team with the most points overall is named the winner. The pairs short program consists of several required elements including lifts, side-by-side solo jumps done in unison, throw jumps, a step sequence and a death spiral. The free skate consists of technical skills and choreography that show off the strengths of the team.
⛸ Read a short book (150 - 200 pp) or a long book (450 + pages) OR read a book featuring a choreographer of some kind; tell us who.
Ninth House - Leigh Bardugo (608 pages) 11/12

4. Rule 300 of the International Skating Union (ISU) rulebook states that teams in both pairs' skating and ice dance consist of “one Woman and one Man.” (The rule previously read as “one Lady and one Man,” but the ISU announced it would start using “Woman” instead in June 2021.). This, of course, may change in the future.
⛸ Read a book written by a male / female team (i.e. Susan Wittig Albert) OR read a book with one man and one woman on its cover; no more, no less; remember to post the cover).
Hit Me with Your Best Scot - Suzanne Enoch 11/10

5. The death spiral is a figure skating term used to describe a spin involving two partners in the discipline of pair skating. While spinning one partner lowers the other partner as the partner getting close to the ice arches backward on one foot.
⛸ Read a book whose title contains the word "DEATH;" exact matches only OR read a book whose author's first and last initial may be found in "SPIRAL."
A Witch Too Late - Paula Lester & M.E. Harmon 11/27

Barbara ★ | 9252 comments Olympics #31 : Figure Skating
Duration: February 1 - March 31, 2022

READ: 10/10

1. Figure skating is the oldest sport in the Winter Olympics. It's synonymous with the Games themselves and is arguably one of the most popular sports at the Winter Olympics.
⛸ Read a book whose title starts with a letter in OLYMPICS (disregard a, an, the) OR read a very popular book - higher than 100,000 ratings; tell us how many ratings.
The Thursday Murder Club - Richard Osman (186,674 ratings) 3/8

2. Ironically, figure skating was first introduced at the 1908 London Summer Games which featured pairs, men’s, and ladies’ events. Figure Skating appeared again in the 1920 Antwerp Summer Games before being permanently transferred to the Winter Olympic Games, first held in 1924 in Chamonix, France.
⛸ Read a book with an easily identifiable winter scene on its cover; remember to post the cover OR read a book that takes place in England, France, or Belgium; tell us where.
The 19th Christmas - James Patterson & Maxine Paetro 2/14
The 19th Christmas (Women's Murder Club, #19) by James Patterson

3. The men's and women's singles as well as the pairs events consist of two portions: the short program and the free skate. All events for the short program are 2 minutes, 40 seconds (plus or minus 10 seconds). The men's and pairs' free skates are 4 minutes, 30 seconds (plus or minus 10 seconds), while the women's free skate is 4 minutes (plus or minus 10 seconds).
⛸ Read a book with any type of time device on its cover; remember to post the cover OR read a book whose total pages are between 240 and 430 pages; tell us how many pages.
Death of an Irish Mummy - Catie Murphy (256 pages) 3/9

4. The short program features required elements which include jump elements, spin elements and a step sequence. With fewer elements to perform, the short program leaves less room for error, and skaters rely on clean performances and high component scores to earn points heading into the free skate.
⛸ Read a book whose title includes a word synonymous with short (i.e. slight, tiny, small) OR read a book in which a competition of some sort takes place; briefly tell us what.
Chaos Choreography - Seanan McGuire 3/19
(MC is involved in a reality TV show competition)

5. The free skate, the second and longer segment of competition, features a broader set of requirements and a maximum number of elements a skater may perform. After a skater completes his or her free skate and receives a free skate score, that score is added to the short program score to determine overall standings.
⛸ Read a book whose title contains the word "FREE" (reasonable variations acceptable - i.e. freedom, freelance, freeze) OR read a the second book in a series; tell us the name of the series.
Beyond the Gate - Susan Gourley (The Futhark Chronicles #2) 2/9

6. Form, style, technique, concentration and the ability to perform under pressure are the key requirements in ladies and men’s singles events. The short and long programs display the elegance, athleticism and talent synonymous with the sport of figure skating and receive a technical score and a program component score from a panel of judges.
⛸ Read a book about a famous figure skater (real or fictional); tell us who OR read a book whose author's first and last initial may be found in TECHNIQUE, ELEGANCE, or ATHLETICISM; indicate which word you used.
Hold Back The Storm - Lynn Hanna (L & H in atHLeticism) 2/1

7. The technical panel is responsible for identifying the elements in the program (the kind of jump, the type of spin, etc.) and evaluating how well each is performed. Each of the elements the technical panel calls has a specified base value as dictated by the Scale of Values.
⛸ Read a "how to" or "technical" book OR read a book you would rate highly (4 or 5 stars) on your own personal Scale of Values.
Crowbones - Anne Bishop (fantastic book & series) 3/14

8. There are nine judges who then judge each of the elements based on their quality, awarding one of seven grades of execution (-3, -2, -1, 0, +1, +2, +3) which add or subtract points from the base value of the element. The judges are also responsible for marking the Program Components, or the marks for artistry.
⛸ Read a book with a nine in its original year of publication; tell us the year OR read a book whose cover you deem artistic; remember to post the cover.
To Ride a White Horse - Pamela Ford 2/21
(white horse represents waves and is created out of waves, very creative)
To Ride a White Horse (Out of Ireland, #1) by Pamela Ford

9. There are six different types of jumps in figure skating: toe loop, flip, lutz, loop, Salchow, and axel. The jumps are defined by the lead in to the jump (i.e. inside or outside edge of the blade) as well as the landing position. Five of the jumps have been successfully quadrupled in Olympic performances; those are the toe loop, flip, lutz, loop, and Salchow.
Read a book with a cardinal number in its title (one, twenty; NOT first, twentieth) OR read a book with the word "JUMP" in its title (reasonable variations okay - i.e. jumping, jumped) or shows someone jumping on its cover; remember to post the cover.
One Poison Pie - Lynn Cahoon 3/15

10. The axel is the only jump entered from a skater's forward position, which means any assigned number has an additional half revolution. For example, a single axel is actually 1-1/2 revolutions. A quadruple axel has never been successfully executed in an Olympic performance.... yet!
⛸ Read a book in which a main character is trying to accomplish something significant; tell us what (attempt does not have to be successful) OR read a book with an "X" in its title or author's name; be sure to post the author link if using that option.
Moonlight Masquerade - Jude Deveraux 3/18

Barbara ★ | 9252 comments Olympics #33 : Baseball and Softball
Duration: May 2022

READ: 4/6

✔️1. Baseball was featured several times in the Olympics as a demonstration sport before being included as a medal event at the 1992 games in Barcelona. It continued as a regular event from then until the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, after which it was dropped from the Summer Olympic program.
⚾ Read a book with a sports theme (fiction or non-fiction) - or - a book with some sort of ball shown on the cover (Bonus if it's a baseball or softball!; show us the cover).
The Trade - Meghan Quinn (baseball) 5/17

✔️2. The sport was revived for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo for a single appearance. Japan chose to reinstate softball and baseball because both sports are hugely popular there. It is next expected to be part of the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
⚾ Read a Series #1 book (tell us the series) - or - a book that is very popular, rated at least 4.2 stars at the time you read it (tell us the rating).
Pleading the Fish - Bree Baker (4.48) 5/14

✔️3. Baseball was originally open only to male amateurs. As a result, Americans (and other nations where professional baseball is developed) relied on collegiate players, while Cubans used their most experienced veterans, who technically were considered amateurs as they nominally held other jobs but in fact trained full-time. In 2000, pros were admitted, but the MLB refused to release its players in 2000, 2004, and 2008, so the situation changed very little. Cubans were still using their best players, while Americans started using minor leaguers. The Olympic Committee cited the absence of the best players as the main reason for baseball being dropped from the Olympic program. Cuba won the gold medal on the sport’s competitive debut and three times in total before it was removed from the program.
⚾ Read a book written by a male author - or - a book in which one character has an unfair advantage over another (such as size difference, cunning, etc.; be creative and tell us briefly how your book fits).
The Book Stops Here - Ian Sansom 5/14

4 & 5. Olympic baseball is nearly identical to most professional baseball. Aluminum bats were disallowed after 1996 in Atlanta. There is also a mercy rule invoked if a team is winning by 10 or more runs after 7 innings (or 6.5 innings if the home team was leading). For Sydney in 2000, rosters were expanded to 24 players.
⚾ Read TWO books with nearly identical titles or covers (show us the covers, if you choose that task).
Examples: Dead to Rights / Dead to Writes
Murder at Archly Manor / Murder at Bray Manor
Murder Most Fowl / Murder Most Grave / Murder Most Sweet
Cabin Pressure One Man's Desperate Attempt to Recapture His Youth as a Camp Counselor by Josh Wolk / Ten Girls to Watch by Charity Shumway
The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards / Prayers for Sale by Sandra Dallas

✔️6. Softball was introduced in 1996 at the Olympic Games in Atlanta as a women-only medal sport, with the United States winning the sport’s inaugural gold medal. Rule differences between Olympic softball and baseball include: 1) The ball is pitched underhand. 2) The ball must weigh 6.25-7.0 ounces (177-200 g). 3) The pitcher's mound is the same height as the rest of the playing surface, with the infield being covered in dirt instead of grass. 4) The distance between bases is 60 feet (18 m) instead of the 90 feet (27 m) of Olympic baseball. 5) The bat is no longer than 34 inches (86cm) compared to 42 inches (106cm) in baseball. 6) Games at the Olympics have seven innings compared to baseball's nine innings.
⚾ Read a bookby a female author - or - a book with a "7" or "9" in the original publication YEAR (tell us the year)
Crimson Lake - Candice Fox 5/6

The Trade (The Brentwood Boys, #4) by Meghan Quinn Pleading the Fish (Seaside Café Mysteries, #7) by Bree Baker The Book Stops Here (Mobile Library Mystery, #3) by Ian Sansom Crimson Lake (Crimson Lake, #1) by Candice Fox
