The Angels' Share

Rate this book
#1 New York Times bestselling author J. R. Ward delivers the second novel in her Bourbon Kings series—a sweeping saga of a Southern dynasty struggling to maintain a façade of privilege and prosperity, while secrets and indiscretions threaten its very foundation…

In Charlemont, Kentucky, the Bradford family is the crème de la crème of high society—just like their exclusive brand of bourbon. And their complicated lives and vast estate are run by a discrete staff who inevitably become embroiled in their affairs. This is especially true now, when the apparent suicide of the family patriarch is starting to look more and more like murder…

No one is above suspicion—especially the eldest Bradford son, Edward. The bad blood between him and his father is known far and wide, and he is aware that he could be named a suspect. As the investigation into the death intensifies, he keeps himself busy at the bottom of a bottle—as well as with his former horse trainer’s daughter. Meanwhile, the family’s financial future lies in the perfectly manicured hands of a business rival, a woman who wants Edward all to herself.

Everything has consequences; everybody has secrets. And few can be trusted. Then, at the very brink of the family’s demise, someone thought lost to them forever returns to the fold. Maxwell Bradford has come home. But is he a savior...or the worst of all the sinners?

Secrets, secrets, and more secrets. Oh, the drama! I love it! The Bourbon Kings series is like a big ole soap opera and I just want to grab the popcorn and watch it all unfold. If I thought the first book was addicting and ended with a cliffhanger, I hadn’t seen anything yet. This book was on the long side, but completely fast-paced and compelling. I was concerned that I would have trouble remembering all that happened in book one, but as I read, it all came back to me. It’s one of those books that is impossible to forget.

Just an FYI- If you haven’t read The Bourbon Kings, there may be some book 1 spoilers in this review.

Back to Kentucky with the Baldwine family, a large part of this story is dealing with the aftermath of William Baldwine’s death and the chaos he left surrounding it. The Baldwine’s are not in a good way financially. Their father made sure of that.
“I have to stay and clean up this mess. It’s the only way I’ll ever be free of this family. Righting the wrongs of my father is the only way to earn my freedom.”

Lane is trying to keep everything together. He has effectively taken on the role as ‘head of the family’ and he’s struggling, but making progress and doing the best he can. It seems like everything is stacked against him, but I admired his tenaciously. He never gives up no matter how hopeless the situations may look. I also love the relationship he has with Lizzie. I love them together. I also like his friend Jeff and the role he played in this book. And Mack too!

Edward’s story shocked me the most. I can’t go into details, but wow. I want so much more for this Baldwine brother. He’s been through so much, and he’s my favorite of the bunch. His brother Maxwell also made an appearance for the first time. I have my theories on that…

Then there is the only girl of the bunch, Gin Baldwine. Gin is at a crossroads in her life and even though she’s made some poor choices, I love how she is changing. I don’t love all the choices she made in this book, but toward the end, I was totally rooting for her and how things would end up for her and her daughter. Also, Samuel T… I NEED THEM TOGETHER! I can’t wait for him to find out what she’s been hiding from him and see how he reacts!
“You’re better than this. You deserve better than this… You’re priceless, Gin, no matter what’s in your bank account.”

The Angel’s Share is a scandalous series that is a completely compelling and intricate story of the Baldwine siblings. It’s not one of those stories that are relatable necessarily, but the story is addicting and one you won’t want to put down. JR Ward’s writing is flawless and the Baldwine’s world is one you’ll want to get lost in! Be prepared to read non-stop once you start this one. After each unexpected plot twist, I’m left wanting the next book in this series more and more!

“What else am I supposed to do?”
“Call the f*cking Feds! Be normal instead of some kind of Kentucky Fried Tony Soprano!”

As we return to Charlemont, Kentucky, and the endless new challenges now facing the four Bradford siblings in the aftermath of their father’s sudden passing—the myriad of questions surrounding not only his final hours, but also the financial chaos he left behind—we are once more reminded of the utterly addictive quality of J.R. Ward’s writing and her extraordinary ability to instantly pull us into any one of her stories with the sheer detail of her world-building talent. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough, speed-reading at times just to find out what happens next, because once you meet these characters, once you become invested in their fate, you cannot help but want each one of them to find happiness as soon as possible, even when their every step points towards absolute emotional devastation. This was a sublime instalment in a truly mesmerizing series, a worthy sequel to an all-time favourite of mine.

Such an amazing series!
I can't wait to see all that drama on tv. The Bourbon Kings series has EVERYTHING a good tv drama needs: LOVE, ROMANCE, SEX, LIES, SECRETS, BETRAYAL, HATE, FAMILY-FEUDS, FRIENDSHIP, WHISKY, SADNESS, HAPPINESS, ...ugh...and so much more.

This 2nd book starts off where we left them all at the end of the first.
For people who don't remember the first one (and haven't done a re-read like I did) and even for people who haven't read the first one at all (#whyevernot?), JR Ward explains a lot of what happened in the first book.

I just loved how Lane tries everything to keep his family and the family business alive ....
All of our 8 POVs have lots to do in this 2nd book - lots of excitement for everyone!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SERIES!!!!
please dear TV God - hurry and bring this show into my living room asap!

This review is 100% spoiler free.

I have NEVER ONCE felt intimidated to review a book. Till now. I simply don't know if my broken English will do this mind-blowing series justice it deserves. But I am going to give it a try ...

As I said half way though my reading progress, I haven't read something this EPIC since 'The Bourbon Kings', the first installment of this brilliant series, back in July. The two weeks I waited for 'The Angels' Share' to go live were the longest two weeks ... possibly EVER. I didn't have much luck with sequels this year but J.R. Ward proved to be the 'Master Storyteller' that she is and knocked this one out of the ballpark! As a matter of fact, I am taking a week hiatus and not starting anything yet because I simply need time to digest the EPIC-ness of what I just read and want to bask in the glorious writing! Plus, it simply won't be fair for any book to follow this one and NOT pale in comparison.

This book ... THIS SERIES!

I always found fascinating how some authors can weave such great story. But then there is a handful of authors that can not only weave but do it so masterfully that by the end of said story, you feel in awe, like you are in a daze. Because you were 100% invested. And everything around you ceased to exist. THIS is what happened to me while reading this series. I felt like I was THERE. Going through all the trials and tribulations together with one hell of an amazing cast!

I WISH I could put together even a few coherent sentences to describe everything this book and this series made me feel. Alas, I can't so instead, I'll use J.R. Ward's own quote to describe what this series felt like [to me]: "Six levels of spice, and each one is a taste of heaven ..." Truly!

I've yet to read something that was so sexy, without being vulgar. So intelligent, without sounding condescending. So intriguing. So decadent . This is a MUST READ for those who enjoy not only a great story but EXCEPTIONAL storytelling as well.

Now that I am finished, I want to:

1. learn how to play poker;
2. visit the South and try REAL soul food;
3. start drinking bourbon;
4. expand my vocabulary.

Cheers!

P.S.

In the second installment to the Bourbon Kings series, J.R. Ward delivers a page-turning read with THE ANGELS’ SHARE. If you thought the first book was packed with dark secrets and even darker characters, be prepared for more jaw-dropping surprises that will surely make your head spin. Ward flawlessly executes each twist and turn, resulting in a gripping read that will keep you hooked.

Ward utilizes multiple POVs in this book, just like she does with her BDB series. There are plenty of moments between Lane and Lizzie as she further deepens their connection and love. We get more updates on Gin and the sad situation she is now in. While I didn’t immediately fall in love with her in the first book, I am growing to like her more and more now.

But I think for me the star of the book is Edward. Edward is the one Bradford that we don’t really know much about. Shrouded in secrecy all the time, we don’t really know what is going on in his head most of the time and I find that fascinating about his character. He’s my favorite character of the series, by far.

Again, Ward focuses on the family drama, keeping the romance dialed to a simmer. It’s still effective though and I actually liked that it wasn’t played up too much. There’s already so much going on that I think it would’ve been unbalanced otherwise.

For me the writing is what makes this book so good. Ward hit a wave with this book. It flows so eloquently and when it’s time for a bomb to drop, it’s done so perfectly that you don’t often expect until it happens. Even if you aren’t a fan of soap operas or the South, you can’t deny that the story just keeps getting juicier with each book.

I would highly suggest reading the first book before this one, and be prepared for some shocking twists! The South has never been so scandalous!

5++ Falling STARS

This was one magnificent follow up to The Bourbon Kings. The saga of the Bradford family continues with the future of their dynasty hanging in the balance as the secrets, trysts, and intrigue unfolds.

This was a push and pull read for me. I was fully engrossed, magically transported to Charlemont, Kentucky; walking the grounds and halls of Easterly with these characters. And as much as I couldn't get enough, I also wanted to slow down my reading. I didn't want it to end.

"Money didn't matter."

The writing is superb: descriptive, rich and captivating. The cast of characters are as memorable as they are flawed and lovable, each and every one of them. While already a fan of bourbon - yes I've purchased expensive Kentucky Bourbon and it's worth every drop - JR does a fantastic job of growing my appreciation for the elixir as well as my love of the South.

This story, the writing and the characters was like a mix of The Great Gatsby, anything by Tennessee Williams and dash of Gone with the Wind. This tale has a bit of everything from murder to high stakes poker to diamonds and gold. And the emotions will have you on your knees! The intense relationships, lost loves, regrets and second chances.

I can't recommend this series enough. It's a MUST READ! And I have no clue how I'll make till the next book!!!

Angels’ Share is the 2nd book in J R Ward's The Bourbon Kings series and continues the saga of the Bradford clan. I really liked the 1st book, The Bourbon Kings - see my review here... https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... and I was so looking forward to the next chapter AND DRAMA in the lives of Bradford Clan.

Angel's Share starts off where book #1 ended. Lane Bradford is having to deal with the fallout of the family's financial disasters. Lizzie and Lane are together. Now, I had this thing in my head that this book would be Edward, the older Bradford brother's story. But now, it's not!!!

It's somewhat a bit of everything and nothing!!! More about Lane and Lizzie. More about Edward and his emotional and traumatic life and his feelings for Shelby. And other characters that come to his ranch..........

Then there's Gin, the Bradford sister. This is a beyond damaged and broken woman!!! No, let's just say...the Bradfords......hell, they are damaged in some way or other!!! See, money does not make you happy!!!

Then there's the murder of the Bradford patriarch. And of course, the Baldwine nee
Bradford Mom now has dementia.............this family has more DRAMA than what one ever dreams of..............DRAMATIC ....DRAMATIC

The story never seemed to go anywhere and I also felt a lack of character development.

All these new characters are introduced.....seriously....most of the characters in this series are not very likeable........in fact, there are very few that I find remotely likeable
.....like Lane & Lizzie...but the one that interests me the most, is Edward. Hopefully the next book will be his.

Of course, I will be reading book #3.....are you kidding??? After that cliffhanger!!!

I enjoyed the first book this series in an indulgent night-time soap sort of way. And I had even higher hopes for this second installment. After all, I love a good scarred, tortured hero, and Edward definitely fits the bill. In The Bourbon Kings, JR Ward clearly set up the romance between him and Sutton, the daughter of the rival distillery. Or did she?

I think one of my big problems with this book was its total failure to meet my expectations. Maybe that’s my fault. Perhaps I should not have assumed this was Edward’s book. Heck, maybe I shouldn’t have assumed that there would be a romance in each book. Because (SPOILER ALERT) there’s not. Edward is not the hero of this book at all. It’s still largely from his brother Lane’s POV. And what time we did spend with Edward frustrated me utterly. Because he seemed to be getting involved with two woman. He’s kissing and snuggling with one, having sex with another, and I just don’t want to read that.

I’m trying to be fair and judge the story not for what I thought it was supposed to be, but rather for what it really was. But based on the first book and based on the fact that JR Ward is the author, I think most people are going to expect the same things I did. They will be disappointed too.

What this book does do is focus on the death of the Bradford family patriarch and the mess he left behind. He bankrupted the company. He sired illegitimate children. He destroyed Edward. And pretty much no one mourns his death. But the family and the business must go on. The book follows Lane as he steps up in his growing role as head of the family, as he tries to track the money, and as he figures out how to save everyone he loves –and the Bradford legacy—from ruin.

We do get to spend some time with his siblings. The prodigal son Max returns, but it’s barely a cameo. As I mentioned, Edward gets some page time, but he left me frustrated and confused. And Gin returns to both fascinate and repulse me with her overwhelmingly self-destructive behaviors. I pretty much liked no one.

I was interested in the story, because Ward can reel me in. But this is twice now she has let me down and left me wholly dissatisfied with one of her books. (Let’s not even talk about that BDB debacle.) I expect certain basic things from a romance author, not the least of which is romance… at least somewhere in there. It doesn’t have to be the A-plot. But it should be somewhere. Here, it’s just not.

Spoilers if you haven’t read the first book.

The Baldwin’s are definitely going through the ringer thanks to their horrid dad, William Baldwin! It’s a trial by fire, and we’re getting to see what each character is really made of. Last we left off in The Bourbon Kings, William (Lane, Edward, Gin, and Max’s father) turned up dead, and Lane discovered the family’s finances were severely depleted. I had thought The Angel’s Share would be mainly Edward and Sutton’s book since Lizzie and Lane’s romance is pretty much settled, but that was not the case. I think Lane and Lizzie are still the center of this series, dealing with the financial woes and death of William, trying to keep the family and business afloat. But Edward, Sutton, Gin, and Samuel T, and Mack each have POV’s, and like the first book all these players have a significant role in the story.

Lane and Lizzie presented a united front, and I loved them together! Lane took the lead in trying to salvage the Bradford Bourbon business and figure out where all the money went. Lizzie steps up and helps organize the household and every day matters, while giving much needed support to Lane. Whether William committed suicide or died in some other way becomes more of a problem as the story goes on and there are a few revelations that impact the family greatly!

I didn’t expect to enjoy this installment as much as I did because I was worried there was a love triangle brewing between Edward, Sutton and Shelby. I also hate reading stories where one couple should be together (Edward and Sutton, IMO), and you’re pretty sure they will be together by the end, but then a large page count is devoted to the love interest being with someone else. In this case, I was worried there would be too much time spent with Edward and Shelby having hookups and whatnot. I won’t say what happens, but I shouldn’t have worried. That’s not saying that J.R. Ward isn’t putting her characters through some hard times, though. It’s hard to write this without spoiling anything, but I’m anxious for the next installment! How could you leave things like that, Ms. Ward?!! Ack! Please, don’t leave it like that!

Gin continues on with her plan to marry that wretched Richard Pford, seeing him as the only way to financial security. I wasn’t especially fond of Gin in the first book, because she had so much given to her: money, education and definitely connections, yet she thought a marriage to a complete horror of a man as her only solution! She was such a snob, too! By the end I had some hope, though, that Gin is turning a corner, both personally and with her daughter. As for Gin and Samuel T., who knows how that will turn out once everything comes out. They were definitely less hateful towards each other in this installment, but I think Samuel .

As a side note, if it’s been a while since you read the first book and have trouble remembering all characters and their roles fear not, because there is a “Dramatis Personae”, a who’s who in the beginning of the book to sort everyone out. Very helpful!

J.R. Ward weaved a riveting, and addictive tale with The Angel’s Share, and now I’m dying to get my hands on the next book! Do I really have to wait a whole year?! I hope not!

I'm not feeling this book. I don't think I've even read a solid chapter. I'm pushing myself into reading it and I'll end up hating it if I keep up this way.

________________________________________

Alright, I don’t know what to think.

description

First of all, I really hope that’s not the official cover because I rather have the same cover as the first book but with a blue filter than this one but that’s just my opinion.

Now, I’m really excited to see maybe that we’ll have more of Edward so this are my predictions and/or things that need to happen in The Angel’s Share.

•Edward and Shelby need to happen. I no longer care about a platonic relationship between the two of them, no. Now I want them in a steamy, full of care and nurturing relationship. They will tripped a lot on the way but they’re worth it.

description

•Lane and Lizzie MUST NOT break up again. They were not my favorites, y’all know that and this book should be focus on Edward and solving his father’s murder so they need to keep their drama at bay.

•We need some hints or suspects. We need to start figuring out who’s doing shit. I firmly think the mind behind everything is the mother. She knew what her husband was doing and she was playing dumb until she got to kill him.

description

•Gin needs to level up. I have some sort of respect for her but that won’t last if she doesn’t woman up and star getting shit done, she won’t go anywhere.

Ward can do so much better in this new book and I hope she does because, while I loved the story and some characters, it was way too heavy and TAS is the perfect opportunity to improve.

The Angel's Share was a pretty good follow up to The Bourbon Kings. Just like the first book it was packed with plenty of drama, intrigue, mystery, and romance. I'm not a giant fan of the contemporary romance/drama genre but this series works for me as it feels a whole lot like reading Ward's BDB PNR series. This one lacks the cool paranormal stuff but makes up for it by having plenty of crazy drama to keep things exciting.

This had the feel of a prime time soap opera. It focused on the lives of the wealthy, but incredibly dysfunctional, Bradford family. The family make their money from selling bourbon. Their company produces the most highly sought after and exclusive brands and with a 200 year history this has resulted in generations of wealth and privilege.

The story in this one picks up after the crazy happenings at the end of the first book. The shock suicide of the families hated patriarch and the revelation that the company is in financial bother due to the misappropriation of funds has the Bradford siblings all scrambling to recover in their own ways.

It was a fun read. Not quite as much fun as the first book, but still engaging and enjoyable. It was very "Ward" in style with a lot of crazy dialogue and the other crazy stuff in her writing that anyone who has read any of her books will be familiar with. Lucky for me I always seem to be able to ignore the worst aspects of her writing and still end up enjoying the crazy over the top happenings!

I expected a little more progress on the romance front as not a lot happened between Edward and Sutton or Gin and Samuel T, but we did finally get to met Max and Amelia and plenty happened on the drama front to keep the plot ticking along.

The ending was a bit of a surprise so it should be interesting to see where Ward goes with the third book.

Rating: 4 stars.

Audio Note: Alexander Cendese did a decent job with the audio.

The Angels' Share by J.R. Ward is a 2016 NAL publication.

Well drawn characters, razor sharp dialogue and truly stunning twists and turns kept me turning pages faster than I really wanted to, wishing to savor every nuance of this engrossing novel. The high octane drama had me perched on the edge of my seat, with my jaw hanging open, eyes bulging, reading with bated breath as events spiral in one direction, then another, while the family comes to grips with their new life and the fallout of their father’s death.

I loved every minute of this divine, emotional rollercoaster ride!!

This series has endless possibilities and I will be sitting on pins and needles, waiting impatiently for the next installment. Thanks J.R. Ward for bringing back the family saga and doing with such panache!

Fans of J.R. Ward will be in heaven. I highly recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys contemporary fiction and family sagas.

REVIEW UP

The next chapter in the Bradford family drama. If you are new to this series, start from Book 1. This one is definitely not a stand alone. This is very much an episodic series with an ensemble cast of characters that all play a hand in the Bradford Bourbon business and family drama. Ward approaches this series very much like a soap opera where there are several story threads running at the same time and interweaving with lots of tension, fallout, naughtiness, bitchiness, mystery and angst. So if you are expecting each book to be focused on one couple and a HEA at the end, that’s not the primary focus here. For me though this installment wasn’t as exciting as the first one. This was a filler book so nothing really exciting or major goes on in here, which I personally did find a bit underwhelming. But things that needed to happen happened, the first steps at least. Things kick off near the end and someone ends up paying a hefty price. Things just get messier and messier.

Shelby/Edward/Sutton
I mentally grumbled and cringed at the direction Ward took Edward here with the ‘third party’ Shelby Landis. I saw it coming a mile away and while I wanted to pull my hair out and go why why why? near the end I understood it. It also doesn’t hurt that Edward reaffirms how Sutton is the only woman for him. If you are a BDB reader, Edward and Sutton are the Southern version of Bella & Z. Now I just wanna know how the hell Edward is gonna get out of the shithole mess Ward pulled him into. She definitely wrote him into a corner so I’m curious how she’s gonna get him out of it, cause right now he’s really screwed. And I really really hope Sutton comes through somehow and helps save her man. I’m already getting tired of the strained tension and pitying looks she keeps giving him. They have this awkward distance between them, for good reason, but I need more development with these two. I don’t know but I wasn’t swooning as much over these two in here as I initially had in the previous book and I think a big part of is the limited page time they’ve gotten.

Gin/Samuel T.
“The problem with your sister…” Samuel T. tapped his temple. “Is that as flawed as she is, no one ever compares to her.”

“You can call me,” he said roughly. “Anytime. I know you and I haven’t made sense. We’re bad for each other in all the ways that count, but you can call me. Day or night. No matter where you are, I’ll come for you. I won’t ask for any explanations. I won’t yell at you or berate you. I won’t judge you--and if you insist, I won’t tell Lane or anybody else.”

These two are definitely the modern version of Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara. Gin is very much a flawed messy character and anti-heroine. She’s not likable, in fact 90% of these characters aren’t. But I like messy. I worried for her here because she seemed to regress a little? Or more like going through the same motions of destructive behavior and diva antics. But alas, there is hope for her yet. The slow development of this character was great to see and near the end I breathed a sigh of relief to see her taking steps to being better for herself and for those she loves. I was rooting for her once again and curious as to what she’s going to do next. She’s another character who’s stuck in a hopeless tragic situation of her own making. And she’s carrying a big secret that probably won’t go over well with the man she loves, Samuel.
“The thing is, I just….I need to tell you that the idea of anyone, and I don’t care who the fuck it is, striking you or yanking you or...oh, G-d, I can’t bear to think of what else…”

Samuel T. is my absolute favorite out of all the players. Love love FLOVE him something fierce! In fact he was the only one I liked and cared for in this book. He surprised me the most with how open, honest and raw he was with his feelings in regards to Gin. I was expecting a lot more stone walling and bitter caustic remarks from this jaded playboy but surprisingly no. Far from that. That garden scene where he pours his heart was so beautiful and heartbreaking.
As a tear escaped down her cheek, he brushed it away, and his voice cracked. “You’re better than this. You deserve better than this. Your family’s glorious past is not worth a man hitting you in the present just because you’re afraid you won’t be anything without money. You’re priceless, Gin, no matter what’s in your bank account.”

I’m rooting for these two to get their shit together and make it work. Cause they have A LOT to work through.

Mack MacAllan
I really enjoyed Mack in this book. This character is starting to take more shape and show more layers and I really like what I’m seeing. And the fact that he’s never fallen in love and already seems smitten with his new hired assistant Beth adds the extra cherry on top. I just hope that they don’t jump in the sack so quickly.

Max Baldwine
The ‘blacksheep’ mysterious wayward brother has finally returned, and he seems like a total bad boy. He has potential from what little we see of him. I just really hope if/when Ward pairs him up with someone, can it be with someone new? Like he-has-no-history-with new? Because let me tell you, the whole scorned ‘ex’ or old fling returns is already getting tiring for me. Or maybe because Lane & Lizzie have tired (bored) me out. lol

Overall: Not bad, eager to find out what happens next with all the players. This is a very dramatic series with messy and sometimes unlikable blunt characters. Ward really drags you in though with the complicated dynamics between characters that both frustrates you and pulls at your heartstrings and makes you want to keep reading to find out what happens next. I’m personally very impatient for more Samuel T. and I hope something happens to help Edward’s case because I can’t stand the idea of the situation he’s in right now dragging out for how many books.

My only complaint would be two things. I generally love Ward’s world building and attention to detail but here I kept fighting the urge to skim some parts that goes off on tangents explaining every major & minor character’s backstory and what each room or setting looks like. My eyes started to blur with the endless passages on what the inside of a jet looks like and how many jewels are in Gin’s walk in closets and how many rotating light fixtures are in her brand new state of the art remodeled make-up room, etc. etc. Again this could be because the story pacing seemed to lag a little so I was getting impatient with things but my eyes started to gloss over some of these ‘B-roll’ narration footage if you will. The second thing which was more glaring for me was..... where was the romance? It takes a major back seat in this and I'm not counting Lane and Lizzie frolicking all over the estate. Snooze. I really pray and hope there will be more romance in this series, because I'm a romance gal and I need my fix. I hope this was just a fluke in this book since it was more meant as a set up for the next book. I need more page time and development between the couples. Lane and Lizzie once again kind of took the lead in this one and I hope Ward shuffles it up in the next book cause no offense to them but seeing them all happy doopy and having sex doesn’t qualify for me as ‘romance’. I want more.

This story picks up right where the first book ended with Lane Baldwine struggling to get a handle on and control of his family’s financial crisis while all the siblings deal with the fallout stemming from their father’s surprising death.

If you’re not a fan of dramatic family sagas, you’re probably not going to appreciate this series. Otherwise, sit back and just enjoy the drama because there’s a lot of dish in this one.

Lane and Lizzie have the healthiest relationship of all of them and continue to bond. Edward’s story expands and we get much more insight into what drives him as well as his emergence from his circumstances. Gin is the most complicated of the siblings though it’s easy to reduce her to a caricature. I began to see that there is much more to this woman who hides behind a shallow facade. And, absent sibling Max finally makes an appearance.

There’s so much going on involving many other secondary characters and the Baldwine siblings have a host of other relationships in play, some toxic and others promising. It’s clearly more focused around Lane’s efforts to save the business and what makes that intriguing are the unconventional methods he uses. While the narrator’s female voices are weak, he nails everyone else and really captures the cadence and accents of the region. I’m so looking forward to the conclusion of the story with so much at stake and unresolved. This is just pure guilty pleasure.

3.5 The Story Continues Stars

Angels’ Share is the second book in The Bourbon Kings series. Angels’ Share continues the Bradford’s family clan stories. Although this book is hinted to mainly focus on Edward’s story, since Bourbon King focuses mainly on Lizzie and Lane, but that is not the case. Angels’ Share continues Lizzie and Lane’s story most in my opinion, but we definitely get a slow build-up on the other sibling’s stories. A little disappointing, but J.R. Ward knows how to create slow tension and get you hooked.

Lizzie and Lane, I loved them in the first book. I rooted for them in the beginning and so I question how the love story will continue. Will they both face obstacles? Will they break up? Will they forge together as a united front? All of those questions will be answered. Lane is the star of this book. He’s the most responsible and as much as he has to deal with his ex and continue his love for Lizzie, he needs to make sure the family’s business remains afloat. There’s also a question about his father’s death. I would say about 70% of the book is focused on Lane’s struggle to handle the business and the aftermath of the death of his father. This is more suspenseful than romance, but there’s plenty of plot to keep you questioning to the very end.

Edward is the most interesting Bradford in my opinion. There’s something about what he went through because of his father that I find so fascinating. He’s kind of the ugly beast that needs his happy ending. As much as I craved for Edward’s story, I didn’t get a huge chunk of it. Edward continues to indulge in his drinking and continues to care for no one but himself, or so we think. We also get a softer side of Edward which I enjoyed reading. Which lady does he really love? His helper or long time crush?

Gin is the gal you don’t want to like. She’s selfish, spoiled and greedy. I question if she is really real, but then maybe she’s brought up with so much wealth she just doesn’t understand. It’s a struggle to like Gin. I started to sympathize for her in the first book, but as I kept on reading this one, I just got more frustrated and angry with her. But there are reasons to why Gin does what she does and as you read more about her, my feelings change. I’m not sure what to make of Gin’s dynamics, but I’m curious to where it will go.

Overall The Angels’ Share was written differently from the Bourbon Kings. I found it more suspenseful and more focused on Lane’s story on how he handles the family’s company. I’m really anxious for the next book, as I hope J.R. Ward brings the story back to the “romance” of the series.

EXCLUSIVE Excerpt from THE ANGELS’ SHARE by J. R. Ward

Toyota trucks were not supposed to go seventy-five miles an hour. Especially when they were ten years old.
At least the driver was wide awake, even though it was four a.m.

Lizzie King had a death grip on the steering wheel, and her foot on the accelerator was actually catching floor as she headed for a rise in the highway.

She had woken up in her bed at her farmhouse alone. Ordinarily, that would have been the status quo, but not anymore, not now that Lane was back in her life. The wealthy playboy and the estate’s gardener had finally gotten their act together, love bonding two unlikelies closer and stronger than the molecules of a diamond.

And she was going to stand by him, no matter what the future held.

After all, it was so much easier to give up extraordinary wealth when you had never known it, never aspired to it—and especially when you had seen behind its glittering curtain to the sad, desolate desert on the far side of the glamour and prestige.

God, the stress Lane was under.

And so out of bed she had gotten. Down the creaking stairs she had gone. And all around her little house’s first floor she had wandered.

When Lizzie had looked outside, she’d discovered his car was missing, the Porsche he drove and parked beside the maple by her front porch nowhere to be seen. And as she had wondered why he had left without telling her, she had begun to worry.

Just a matter of nights since his father had killed himself, only a matter of days since William Baldwine’s body had been found on the far side of the Falls of the Ohio. And ever since then Lane’s face had had a faraway look, his mind churning always with the missing money, the divorce papers he had served on the rapacious Chantal, the status of the household bills, the precarious situation at the Bradford Bourbon Company, his brother Edward’s terrible physical condition, Miss Aurora’s illness.

But he hadn’t said a thing about any of it. His insomnia had been the only sign of the pressure, and that was what scared her. Lane always made an effort to be composed around her, asking her about her work in Easterly’s gardens, rubbing her bad shoulder, making her dinner, usually badly, but who cared. Ever since they had gotten the air cleared between them and had fully recommitted to their relationship, he had all but moved into her farmhouse—and as much as she loved having him with her, she had been waiting for the implosion to occur.
It would almost have been easier if he had been ranting and raving.

And now she feared that time had come—and some sixth sense made her terrified about where he had gone. Easterly, the Bradford Family Estate, was the first place she thought of. Or maybe the Old Site, where his family’s bourbon was still made and stored. Or perhaps Miss Aurora’s Baptist church?

Yes, Lizzie had tried him on his phone. And when the thing had rung on the table on his side of the bed, she hadn’t waited any longer after that. Clothes on. Keys in hand. Out to the truck.

No one else was on I-64 as she headed for the bridge to get across the river, and she kept the gas on even as she crested the hill and hit the decline to the river’s edge on the Indiana side. In response, her old truck picked up even more speed along with a death rattle that shook the wheel and the seat, but the damn Toyota was going to hold it together because she needed it to.

“Lane . . . where are you?”

God, all the times she had asked him how he was and he’d said, “Fine.” All those opportunities to talk that he hadn’t taken her up on. All the glances she’d shot him when he hadn’t been looking her way, all the time her monitoring for signs of cracking or strain. And yet there had been little to no emotion after that one moment they’d had together in the garden, that private, sacred moment when she had sought him out under the blooms of the fruit trees and told him that she’d gotten it wrong about him, that she had misjudged him, that she was prepared to make a pledge to him with the only thing she had: the deed to her farmhouse—which was exactly the kind of asset that could be sold to help pay for the lawyers’ fees as he fought to save his family.

Lane had held her, and told her he loved her—and refused her gift, explaining he was going to fix everything himself, that he was going to somehow find the stolen money, pay back the enormous debt, right the company, resurrect his family’s fortunes.

And she had believed him.

She still did.

But ever since then? He had been both as warm and closed off as a space heater, physically present and completely disengaged at the same time.

Lizzie did not blame him in the slightest.

It was strangely terrifying, however.

Off in the distance, across the river, Charlemont’s business district glowed and twinkled, a false, earthbound galaxy that was a lovely lie, and the bridge that connected the two shores was still lit up in spring green and bright pink for Derby, a preppy rainbow to that promised land. The good news was that there was no traffic, so as soon as Lizzie was on the other side, she could take the River Road exit off the highway, shoot north to Easterly’s hill, and see if his car was parked in front of the mansion.

Then she didn’t know what she was going to do.

The newly constructed bridge had three lanes going in both directions, the concrete median separating east from west tall and broad for safety purposes. There were rows of white lights down the middle, and everything was shiny, not just from the illumination, but a lack of exposure to the elements. Construction had only finished in March, and the first lines of traffic had made the crossing in early April, cutting rush-hour delays down—
Up ahead, parked in what was actually the “slow” lane, was a vehicle that her brain recognized before her eyes properly focused on it.

Lane’s Porsche. It was Lane’s—

Lizzie nailed the brake pedal harder than she’d been pounding the accelerator, and the truck made the transition from full-force forward to full-on stop with the grace of a sofa falling out a second-story window: Everything shuddered and shook, on the verge of structural disintegration, and worse, there was barely any change in velocity, as if her Toyota had worked too hard to gain the speed and wasn’t going to let the momentum go without a fight—

There was a figure on the edge of the bridge. On the very farthest edge of the bridge. On the lip of the bridge over the deadly drop.

“Lane,” she screamed. “Lane!”

Her truck went into a spin, pirouetting such that she had to wrench her head around to keep him in her sights. And she jumped out before the Toyota came to a full stop, leaving the gearshift in neutral, the engine running, the door open in her wake.

“Lane! No! Lane!”

Lizzie pounded across the pavement and surmounted barriers that seemed flimsy, too flimsy, given the distance down to the river.

Lane jerked his head around—

And lost one hold of the rail behind him.

As his grip slipped, shock registered on his face, a flash of surprise . . . that was immediately replaced by horror.
When he fell off into nothing but air.

Lizzie’s mouth could not open wide enough to release her scream.

Summary (from Goodreads):

What I Liked:

For some reason, I was a little surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I was so nervous, when I started it! I had been excited, but anxious. I don't usually like or read the soap opera types of contemporary fiction, so it was unusual for me to be reading this series at all. But I liked The Bourbon Kings, and I think I might even like The Angels' Share more.

This book is told in third person, from a multitude of perspectives. And yet, the changes in perspectives was never overwhelming. The main POV is Lane Bradford, one of the four Bradford children, and the youngest son. We also have Lizzie's POV, Lizzie being Lane's love and girlfriend. Gin (Lane's sister), Mack (Lane's friend and company distiller), Edward (Lane's oldest brother), Sutton (Edward's love interest and head of the rival bourbon company). Other characters are Samuel T (Gin's former love), Jeff (Lane's old roommate and an accountant helping him), John Lenghe (an interesting and very nice billionaire), Ramsey (deputy in the police force), Shelby (works for Edward), Richard (Gin's finance).

You'd think one would get overwhelmed by the sheer number of primary and secondary characters running around, but they are all SO different and play such different roles in the book. It's hard not to know who is who, and it's hard to forget names. Ward really does a great job of crafting her characters, even with the most minor of details!

This book is all about what happens after Lane's father's death. It's currently known as a suicide, but was it really? Lane is now responsible for the company, and Easterly, and everything associated with the Bradford name and money. But he's quickly realizing that there IS no money, and that the family has millions of dollars in debt. In this book, we see what happens when the son that was never supposed to be the one in charge and taking care of the family is left to investigate and scheme and clean up the messes his father made.

Going into this series, I thought it was strictly romance. And there is a lot of romance in this book, in terms of relationships. Lane and Lizzie and sweet and sizzly together. The Bourbon Kings focused on the "chase", the two of them getting together, but this sequel novel features them together and content. They are so well-matched and so in love, and so strong and solid.

There are other ships in this series, but the rest of the ships are so complicated and probably will never happen. Edward has left the Bradford life behind, and while he loves Sutton and vice versa, he knows he has to say good-bye to her. And Gin - she loves Samuel T. (and vice versa), but they are so toxic together, and she needs to marry the obscenely rich Richard Pford.

Back to what I was saying about this series being strictly romance. It's not! This story reads more like a contemporary fiction novel, with the occasional kiss and fade-to-black sex scene. There are no explicit steamy scenes, no blatantly written oozing chemistry. But you can tell how steamy Lane and Lizzie's relationship is, for example, even if it isn't shown directly. So this series isn't strictly a romance series! Which was surprising and kind of refreshing. I'm a romance novel junkie!

Maxwell is a new player in the series. He is the wilder Bradford son, the one that disappeared years ago, and has entered the picture to pay his respects to his father. He and Edward are up to something, in this book, and we'll have to wait until book three to find out what it is...

My favorite character was probably Lane. He is determined to do everything in his power to protect and save his family, as well as all those employed at the company, and the mansion. Lane has grown into the role he was forced upon, and he is showing that he is a strong and capable leader. I like what I see, in the development of his character. I like how faithful and kind he is to Lizzie (especially knowing what kind of poor example his father was).

I mentioned this series being a little soap-opera-y, which it is. There are all kinds of crazy things happening in this book - cheating spouses, surprise pregnancies, massive amounts of money being handled, bribery, threats, possibly murder... the Bradfords are a messed-up family, that's for sure. But Lane and Lizzie are so solid, and totally devoted to each other. Everyone else... fair game.

We're left with a rather shocking final scene! We finally have an answer, in terms of who killed the Bradford patriarch. Lane has had so much to process, and it seems to get pretty rough at the end (not specifically for him, because there were some really great things that happened to him in the end). There is no way this is the last book in the series! I can't wait to read the next installment. Hopefully it is forthcoming!

What I Did Not Like:

One thing I would have liked to see is more of a progression with the plot involving Lane's ex-wife (or whatever), Chantel. The woman needs to be out of the picture. I wanted to see a more concrete direction in terms of her. But I suppose that will happen in future books!

Would I Recommend It:

Steer clear of this series is you can't handle a little drama. No drama touching our main couple (Lane and Lizzie) in this book, but the other protagonists (Edward, Gin, etc.) go through some drama. I like the setting of this book, and the story, and the conflict (I've never read a story quite like this one!), so I'm enjoying the ride so far.

Rating:

4 stars. So far, I'm impressed! This is only my second Ward novel, and I'm liking this series. Needless to say, I will definitely be keeping up with this series. I can't wait for book three!

Book 2 in JR Wards Bradford family saga just goes to show that being wealthy and powerful doesn't guarantee happiness. They family is dealing with the apparent suicide of the corrupt patriarch William Wyatt baldwine a man of low morals and many secrets.while lane seems to be getting his shit together and is trying to get his act together, his sister gin is still headed for the alter with the slap happy piece of shit Richard pford!! Edward is still dealing with not only his feelings with Sutton Smythe but also with the fall out daddy dear left behind.and then theirs the return of maxwell. So many secrets and great characters keep this story going and one of my fave characters is the sexy Samuel Theodore lodge this bad boy has a heart, too bad he gave it to gin who has a secret that could change not only her life but her daughter's and Samuels also. I love this look into the other half's lives, not such a rosy life after all.The final book in this epic saga will be a mind blower, can't wait!!!

JR Ward set the stage for this soap opera style Southern saga in The Bourbon Kings where she introduced this vast ensemble surrounding the country's oldest bourbon company. The barbed bonds between the Baldwine siblings and their parents dripped of both wealth and deceit, privilege and venom. Behind the opulent walls of Easterly Estate are secrets, lies, betrayal and infidelity. The Bourbon Kings framed the backdrop of this storyline, illustrating the lavish lifestyle of the elite Baldwine family, but The Angels' Share is a gritty closer look into the state of the family as they're faced with losing everything. In this decadent sequel, Ward thrusts the reader deeper into Lane Baldwine's life, into his romance with Lizzie, into his search for answers after the jaw-dropping ending of The Bourbon Kings. As The Angels' Share evolved, I found myself completely consumed by, not only Lane's evolving romance, his search for answers and his tireless efforts at salvaging the family legacy, but with every character in this book and their side stories. Every single player, every Baldwine sibling, every family friend, every long lost love, every new and old BBC employee has a fully fleshed out personality, a captivating story of their own, and each of them adds depth to an already complex storyline. I continue to be blown away by the manner in which Ward delivers such a richly intricate storyline with such a lengthy cast of characters.

This series is the perfect mix of decadence, sex, murder, romance and scandal and The Angels' Share not only lives up to every expectation I had after devouring The Bourbon Kings, but it surpassed them. This addictive family saga had me turning the pages with vigor. This series reads like a movie, like a television serial that'll have you obsessed. I couldn't wait to see how this story played out but at the same time, I wanted to read it slowly, to savor each page.

The cast of characters in this series is colorful and the secrets and lies that bind them are extraordinarily messy.  Peppered with longing, anger and shocking revelations at every turn, The Angels' Share packs so much within its pages. With its moments of tenderness, humor, heartfelt emotion, edge of your seat suspense, and raw sex appeal, this story is the perfect package. The Angels' Share made me laugh, made my eyes well up with unexpected tears, had me white knuckled as I gripped the pages, dreading what would come next. I did not want this book to end. I was lost in Charlemonte, Kentucky, lost in the Easterly mansion, lost in the wicked web of sex and drama and fragmented relationships and long lost loves.

This is the PERFECT summer read. Curl up in your porch swing with a glass of bourbon-spiked sweet tea and GET LOST in this divine story. Prepare to step into another world with The Bourbon Kings series. A world of southern charm and old money. A world where everyone is polite and well mannered even when they're discussing murder and infidelity, betrayal and bankruptcy. A lavish world of mystery and deceit. A world of longing for loves lost. A world where the rich sip bourbon and marry for financial security. A world where butlers and staff don't make eye contact unless addressed. A world where secrets are revealed as rapidly and unexpectedly as long lost relatives reappear from the woodwork. A world where the grown children of this wickedly wealthy household hold more affection for the cook, Miss Aurora, than their own parents, and where they'd rather eat soul food in the staff quarters than rub shoulders with the elite out on the vast estate lawn. This world is lush and tumultuous and sexy and repugnant and swathed in southern drawls and lies and sweet tea and I. NEVER. WANTED. TO. LEAVE. This is a provocative world, a world JR Ward crafts so superbly, so exquisitely, so thoroughly, I was immersed. I was consumed. I am addicted.

My heart breaks and it will be hard to write this review. Selflessness is something I admire most. And though this broken family is full of self important rich people who seem like bad people on the outside, I've watched them grow on the inside. What bothers me most is the person who admitted to the crime, I doubt is the criminal. And it hurts to see an innocent go down. I love Lane. My only complaint in this book is the blurb doesn't seem accurate. This book is less about Edward and Sutton, and more about Lane saving the family. I'm disappointed with the Edward and Sutton not getting much page time and certainly... Well I can't say for spoilers. Samuel T made me cry. That man. I only wish the best for him and the love of his life. So overall this is a 4.5 stars for me. I rounded up. It sucks I have to wait a year for the next installment. The narration was excellent.

This book started right where book 1 ended. Lane and Lizzie were enjoying their reunion while Lane was stressing out about the financial disaster his father left them. According to their accounting , the Baldwine Family were in the red about $68million.
Older Brother Edward was still struggling physically and emotionally from his kidnapping which was setup by his father. When he's sober, he still pines for Shelby, the daughter of their family rival.
Little sister Gin doesn't seem to comprehend their family's financial dilemma and continues with the marriage to the wealthy Richard. Her relationship with her daughter was another source of strain.
The Baldwine Matriarch was clearly suffering from Alzheimer's because she had no clue whom anyone was, or what's going on. This Baldwine family was just a big dramatic mess.

I was most curious to know if the father committed suicide or was murdered. That mystery was intriguing. The answer left me feeling a bit disappointed. The rest of the story about protecting their family legacy and reviving their financial situation was of no interest to me.

I was not entertained nor engaged. There isn't a single character that I enjoyed. I was a tad hopeful that Edward would rise like a Phoenix but he was still depressing to the end. This series isn't for me.

Audio Review
OMG- this story is a maze of tragically amazing dysfunction. This story picks up where The Bourbon Kings finishes. There are still multiple POVs and the drama and craziness are still alive and thriving at Easterly.

Lane, Lizzie, Ms Aurora, Gary, Edward, Sutton, Shelby, Gin, Samuel T, Richard Ford, Amelia, Little VE, the late William Baldwine, Max, Mac, Beth, Gary, and I know I have forgot others, make up life at Easterly in Charlemont, Kentucky. This story is a perfect drama for TV. The many lives and secrets of every character is over the top and written to perfection. How they all intertwine in this collapsing house of cards is fascinating.

This part of the Bradford/Baldwine story deals mostly with a death and missing money. Lane has assumed the role of head of the family and has committed himself to fix the wrongs of the family. As long as his love, Lizzie is by his side, he vows to help the family from collapse. Gin has decided to follow her lifestyle and marry a ruthless man instead of marrying the man she has forever loved. And then there is Edward......the man that captures your being.

Lies, Secrets, Murder......this family is scandalous and addicting. The story is told in multiple POVs. Every character, whether they are main or secondary, is vital and adds needed elements to the story. I'm looking forward to the next book, Devil's Cut, to get more of this wickedly wild family.

Did you read and love The Thorn Birds? Where you a fan of the television show Dallas or Dynasty? Then I recommend the Bourbon Kings series. It weaves all the elements that made those tales addictive with Ward's impressive ability to tell a story. Ward takes us to Charlemont, Kentucky, There we enter the lives of the Bradford family who built their dynasty on bourbon. We enter through the elaborate front doors and become intimate with Lane, Edward, Max and Gin. We see their reclusive mother, spend time with their staff and learn of their father’s betrayals. Brilliantly told from several perspectives one as addictive as the next we learn their secrets, fears and struggles. For the best reading experience read the series in order beginning with the Bourbon Kings.

A suspected suicide by the family patriarch hints to murder after a gruesome discovery and a full-scale murder investigation begins. Lane fears it may have been Edward. The family’s finances are in serious trouble and Lane is working to keep everything from falling apart. Maxwell, their brother returns. Gin makes plans to marry a man who is all wrong for her. Weaved into this are love stories, losses, friendships, betrayals and deals that kept me happily engaged. Ward is a masterful storyteller allowing me to become completely swept up in this sage.

Ward allowed us to spend time with each character in Angel's Share giving us their history and connecting them to us. Each is realistic and yet over the top. The Bradford's are cocky and self-assured yet vulnerable and raw. Max appears at the big house and we even a little time with him. I am curious and want to know more. Our spunky, stubborn girl Gin sees tremendous growth even as we witness her mistakes. Lane and Lizzie strengthen their romance as he words to hold the family together. Lane continues to be the glue that holds this family together and Ward showed his determination, love for his family and ruthless strength. Edward’s story tore me apart and we watched him tango with a woman who will always hold his heart. We see growth and perhaps peace in Edward even as we witnessed his softer side.

Romances finds its way on to the pages of Angel’s Share but it is subtle and only a part of this complicated symphony. Ward creates a world with characters that becomes real to the reader.

Of course, Ward gives us others stories in Angel's Share, like those of Jeff, Lane’s best friend, the family’s cook, fondly referred to by the Bradford children as Momma. We also get those of Lane’s lawyer and friend. He has always love the complicated and vivacious Gin. Chantal rears her ugly head but has shifted away from the story for now.

Ward wove threads together delivering a flawlessly executed tale. She gave us twists and turns that kept me riveted. She endeared the reader to these characters pulling them into the story. Ward’s ability to pull you in, change your opinion of characters and remember the butler's name provided was magical.

While Bourbon Kings left us with a cliffhanger, The Angel’s Share leaves us in more of an emotional place and eager to return. It has been a long time since I have found myself so wrapped up in a dysfunctional family and the Bourbon Kings is thrilling to read.

Initial Thoughts: Hmm...not exactly what I expected. Perhaps 2.5 - 3.0 stars after I think about this one. No romance. Think Dynasty with lots of bourbon and horses. A few amusing "Wardisms" - I'm not sure that she can resist names that have the letter h *cough* Tiphanii *cough*
The book also feels unfinished - I expect that another book is planned for this series.

The Review:
After much thought and a little discussion with my blogmates, 2 of us agreed that this book was not what we had expected. The third, having never read JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series, did not have the same expectations so she enjoyed the book more. While I like the whole premise of the series, I felt that this book didn't really move the story ahead. Nothing really happens. More background on the characters, a black sheep shows up, and there's a lot of dealing with the aftermath of the death of dear old dad. But nothing is resolved. Think middle book syndrome. That's The Angel's Share.

If you enjoy family saga stories set on large estates with plenty of horses, bourbon, and other intrigue, then this is the book for you - enjoy. You will need to read the first book of the series The Bourbon Kings before delving into this one.

Despite my lower rating, I will continue to read this series. I'm hoping that more will be resolved in the next book. I'm curious about the money trail.

Loved it as much as the original. It's like stepping into a modern-day version of the great nighttime soaps of the 1980's. Delicious, unputdownable reading. Troubled characters from the first book come into their own and accept responsibility for the needs of those around them. A major cliffhanger from the first book serves as the basis for a shocking reveal. The dialogue is sharp and spicy, and there as as many fights as there are tearful reconciliations. It's fun and juicy and when I finished I was sad the third book in the series wasn't on the table next to me so I could start it right then.

I was wondering how this could possibly top The Bourbon Kings and was worried I would be let down by it. I'm so pleased that the exact opposite happened. This book was just as good, if not better, than The Bourbon Kings. I didn't think it possible, but this story had even more drama and secrets than the first one and I loved every second of it! We get to know the characters even better in this book and I've truly grown attached to some of them. I just love the whole cast of them, villains and all! It's impossible to pick a favourite, they're each so unique and add to the story in their own ways. I really enjoyed how fast paced the story was as well, so much was happening and I was completely spellbound the whole way through! And with the way it ended, I'm cursing myself for reading this now and not waiting until the next book comes out in August because I'm just dying to know what happens next!

I loved, loved, loved this book!!!! The Angel's Share is the sequel to The Bourbon Kings, the equally addictive book about the Baldwine family and the secrets and scandal which seems to unfold with every passing day since the death of their father. It's impossible to get enough of these books, they're all long books which I typically don't like, but the page numbers fade into nothing when I'm immersed in the words of JR Ward.

The Angel's Share starts off right after the end of The Bourbon Kings, and we are thrust straight back into the drama surrounding the death of Lane's father and the state of affairs at Easterly. How the author comes up with everything I have no idea, I've never read books before which pack so much of a punch; the debt, deceit, murder, sex, gambling, lies, betrayal, love, decadence...there's just so much of everything!!

Told from multiple POV, we get to see all our favourite characters again and delve deeper into their lives as we watch everything unravel around them and find out the secrets which have been tearing their family apart. And of course, in all great stories (in my opinion anyway) there's romance. As much as I love Lane and Lizzie, I have the biggest soft spot for Edward. Out of all the Baldwine siblings, I desperately need Edward to have a HEA, though I have no idea whether that is likely to happen or not. Oh, and hello mystery Baldwine brother. I can't wait to find out more about him! Also, I need Gin and Samuel T to get it on already! The sexual chemistry is insane between those two!

Ugh, I can't even describe how excited I am to dive into the 3rd book in the series, Devil's Cut. Bring it on!!

When it comes to sagas, there is one thing for certain. You have to devote the time to the novel so you can absorb every drop! That is certainly true for this new release.

Full of mystery and back door dealings, the privileged never looked so good or acted so guilty. This saga is loaded with intrigue, twists and turns that keeps you wondering how can they ever salvage the family or the business.

I love Lane and Lizzie. The author has created and tough couple that can take on the worst of the worst behaviors and together they seem to be the only hope for the future of the family.

The book is loaded with a cast of characters that will not soon be forgotten. From siblings to friends, supporters to backstabbers, each chapter is devoted to another person in the family or business and their drama, eventually bringing everything together for a conclusion that is fitting and somehow not surprising.

J.R. Ward has crafted a story for the ages and so instep and right for today too. Definitely read book one for the most impact and to truly grasp the full family drama!
