I have to say that I really enjoyed this book, I enjoyed the first one but was thinking that it did lack something for me, the second didn't.
The Goblin Queen Alexandra Varden has a lot of stuff happening towards her, you do tend to feel for her with everything going on, but she does handle it well, (I would be a mess, until Vex came and consoled me, that would be better).
I like how when a main character who feels very self centered like xandy does, that the other people do tell her 'not everything is about you' which is a nice thing to hear.
I just hope the next book is as fast paced and interesting.
Alexandra I am glad that you finally became Queen if the Goblins and embraced your monster and be proud. x

Can I just say how much I love Vex? Tall, dark and sexy aside - I love the way that he can be supportive, but not mollycoddling. I love the whole "I will support you whatever you decide but, woman, making a damned decision!" and "Would you like me to get you a cross you can nail yourself on, dear?" (Paraphrasing).
I'm a little less enamored with Xandra, though I do like her, overall.
That said, I still have some issues with the book. (Of course.):
* It's a little overly repetitive. Most of this is because of the whole first person format which is not, as any regular readers of my reviews will know, my favorite perspective. I grok XAndy's uncertainty about her identity and what it means, and her general insecurity even aside from that, but compounded by it, and her irritation and being felt put upon and all... I really, really get it.
But I don't need hear the circular mental narrative repeat itself every coupla pages.
And it's not just the personal stuff, it's the world stuff... like how aristos are scared of humans because even though they and halvies are much stronger than humans, the humans outnumber them by a lot, and, what with modern technology and mob-mentalities and all, they could inflict lots of damage.
While it's important to the world of the story, and an issue she deals with both personally and on a larger scale, I really don't need to be reminded of that little tidbit. I mean, it had to be repeated at least a dozen times.
It almost makes me start to feel like the author thinks her audience is really stupid, or something.
* I would love for Alexandra to, um, I dunno... investigate shit. Seriously, if people didn't, like, walk up to her and give her a clue and a kick in the pants from time to time, I don't think anything would get done. And the whole
She's also lucky that the bad guys in the book are prone to monologuing and shit.
If I recall correctly, this was an issue in the first book, too, and I'm not sure if it was just worse in this book, or if I noticed it more, but I hate whodunit type stories where the detective-type person sort of stumbles into the answer through sheer luck or happenstance as opposed to actual, erm, detecting.

But, for all that, I still find the books enjoyable reads - to the point I'd say they're easily my favorite discovery of the year so far. They're quick, fun and compulsive. I want to keep reading when I'm reading, and I want to get back to it when I'm not reading. I like the characters, overall, and the world, and I like how, with a lot of good sci-fi and fantasy, it touches on real world type stuff through a mix of real issues (i.e. lesbian and transgender characters) and metaphor.
I mean, a lot of this book is about xenophobia and prejudice - both of Alexandra's personally, fighting the conflicting issues of her upbringing and trying to readjust her views based on new data, and of the larger society.
The way that fear of the unknown or strange can quickly turn to anger and lashing out, and the way that we're all guilty of it, in our own ways, and the best we can do is try to get over it and deal with it the best we can.

Can't go into a lot of detail without giving stuff away, so, vaguely, I'll say I was afraid it could potentially go in a direction that I find tiresome and annoying*, and it didn't, and that was awesome.)

This world is so much fun. Basically, the plague bacterium turns the nobility into vampires and werewolves. If they interbreed with humans, they end up with "halfie" kids who have badass powers who regular humans are terrified of. If they interbreed with each other? You get a goblin.
Xandra is a pretty great protagonist, and her werewolf boyfriend reminds me of Lord Maccon from the Parasol Protectorate. Here, she's on the hunt for her half-brother, Val, who's disappeared. Helping her with her hunt is Val's half-sister, Penny, who's referred to as both trans and a drag queen, and...yeah. I really like Penny as a character, but the representation was seriously questionable.
Aaaaaanyway.
There's a lot in the story about prejudice and xenophobia towards the goblins, and I'm reeeeeeally interested to see how the third and final book wraps things up. Also, something happens in the course of this story that strongly hints at a love triangle but NOPE Xandra realises pretty much straight away where her heart truly lies *high fives Kate Locke*.

Book two in the Immortal Empire series, and I think I enjoyed this one more. In fact, I don’t just think so – I know I did.
Don’t get me wrong, I still have some issues with the series, but as a whole this one is a great improvement upon the first. Whereas I was able to put the first book down and do something else for a while, this one demanded my attention. The action started sooner and was nonstop.
With another interesting story – a story debatably more interesting than the first – more about this world becomes clear to the reader. Questions that came about in the first book are addressed, but at the same time new questions appear. Whilst there are some predictable moments, on a whole it was enjoyable.
Plus, the character development!
Whilst certain aspects of the characters nagged at me a bit (although, I think this was just the way things were written as it made things seem repetitive at points), I found the development to be wonderful. Surprisingly, I grew to enjoy more of the characters than I had originally anticipated. Moreover, we get more action from characters who were desperately lacking in the first book.
Overall, a strong second book. More than worth the read if you enjoyed the first one.

Its been a while since I read book 1, but it was easy to jump back into this world. Crazy stuff, awesome characters and really awesome worldbuilding. Looking forward to what happens in the final book!! Picking it up right away

Review after first reading, April 24-25, 2013:
This sequel to God Save the Queen was most excellent! Xandra is a compelling protagonist and it was wonderful to see her in action once again, and to grow with her as she adjusted to being a goblin - and the goblin's queen. Vex is still the sexy and intriguing man/wolf we met in the first book, and being with him again in this outing was great, too. It was fascinating to see more into the world of the goblins, and to learn more about Xandra's family and the threats and dangers to living in their time. I am eagerly looking forward to the release of Long Live the Queen to find out what happens next. I'm anxious to see what happens with the humans who are out for aristo blood, and how Xandra and her goblins will deal with the threat.
EDIT/UPDATE after second reading, December 24-25, 2015:
After reading this book for the second time and reading the above review, I've decided that it - short though it is - doesn't need to be updated. I loved this book possibly even more this second time around. :-) I will however, share this one exchange that I found really hilarious. (And if my laughter upon reading it was a bit hysterical, I hope I can be excused as it was 5:30 in the morning at the time and I'd been awake for about 20 hours.)
Xandra bought fried chicken for dinner with Vex. They have the following exchange, which Xandra sets off by saying,

The Immortal Empire series succeeds in weaving a unique world-building with some known UF cliques. There's politics, action, drama. Overall it's a very likeable series, and this book is even better than the first, even if it won't get in to the memorable pile.
The plot starts from where book one ended. Xandra has to face her new status and her family's reaction to it. Unfortunately they reacted pretty much as the rest of the world, with some horror. But family is always blood and when one of her brothers disappears Xandra launches herself into the mystery.
The story is pretty interesting, even if a couple of threads were cut too abruptly for my taste. They didn't seem really suspended, rather ignored. (They are both linked to what happened in the Tower. )
I'm not sure if there's a hole in the world-building or if I simply missed a point somewhere. We are told that there is no problem if Xandra and her wolf are mates, on the contrary. But we are also told that he has to marry a wolf. Why? Where's the explanation to this? What is the difference?
Consider also that it's a duty to get concubines so you can have half-blood children...
The characters are all interesting and they seem to have more than one layer. The best of them all? The city.
One thing is for sure, if you love London, this is a book for you.
The Queen is dead may be a standard UF novel, but it has plenty of points good enough to make it readable.

Xandra has to come to terms with being a goblin and being offered their crown. Of course, she has a bunch on her plate, other than the royalty/goblin nonsense, too. Her poor brother goes missing, she finds out a few interesting tidbits about her father, some of her family is more welcoming than others. If I was in her position, I would be a hot mess. But she does have Vex on her side. And he is still the ultimate definition of book boyfriend.
This series really pulls you in. I really like that in this one, everything has been established (characters and the like), unlike in the first, where you are getting a bunch of information at once. In this one, instead of feeling like I'm learning so much about their world, I just enjoy delving further into it. It feels less like a history lesson and more like an interesting fantastic story.
And, Xandra is still an amazing character. Although she can be absolutely terrifying when she gobs out, you still end up rooting for her. I really want her to be a fantastic queen. I want her to kick Queen Victoria's ass. I want everything to work out with her and Vex. And I really want her family to get back together. Just want happy endings all around. Of course, now I'll have to read the next book soon to make sure all of that happens.

I really enjoyed the first novel in the Immortal Empire Series, but I felt the second novel in the series fell off the mark and didn’t live up to my expectations. For starters, the setup is almost exactly the same as the first novel. One of Xandra’s siblings goes missing and she has to go find them. This time, it’s her brother, Val. She is still involved in a relationship with her werewolf boyfriend, a relationship that is so typical in this genre of novel. The storyline is very similar to the first novel as well with the exception that Xandra now knows she’s a goblin instead of the mystery in the first novel where she was finding it out. The novel ends very abruptly with no resolution to the storyline except for the missing sibling.
I don’t want to be overly negative, since there were elements of the novel that I enjoyed. The writing for the most part was strong. The characters were generally well done with a couple of exceptions. The plot moved along and set up for the final novel in the series. Overall, it wasn’t a bad read. It just seemed to be a repeat of the first novel, and no new ground was broken here. It did not deter me from wanting to read the finale and completing the series, which I will be doing soon.

The characters were generally well done with a couple of exceptions. The plot moved along and set up for the final novel in the series. Overall, it wasn’t a bad read. It just seemed to be a repeat of the first novel, and no new ground was broken here. It did not deter me from wanting to read the finale and completing the series, which I will be doing soon.

I love alternate histories. They are always so much fun to read. The Queen is Dead by Kate Locke is an alternate and quirky history of London where aristocrats – read vampires, werewolves, and goblins) control London. Even Queen Victoria is a shrewd vampire. The goblins – yes goblins – control the underground. Those that venture below the city rarely return as goblins do like their meat. The vampires and werewolves jostle for power and live among the humans. Add in a few human wannabes – and a few flamboyant entertainers and this is quite the colorful book.
This is an interesting world, complete with its own vocabulary. Thankfully, there is a very useful glossary at the back of the book. If you are reading this on an e-reader, it may be awkward flipping back and forth to the glossary. The author has some pretty intriguing gadgets worthy of a steampunk world. Funnily enough, their mobile devices are called rotaries. Cute!
The Queen is Dead continues the story of Xandra Vardon, who is now trying to deal with her new responsibilities. Actually, for most of the story, she is trying to avoid her new position. Xandra must deal with all sorts of personal problems including the disappearance of her brother Val. Xandra is aided by the rather hunky Vex, her werewolf lover. The story takes the reader on an action packed romp through a 1930’s alternate history steampunked London.
I enjoyed this story and I loved Xandra. For a young woman, she had a lot of important decisions to make. Xandra valued her humanity; she feared becoming a monster. While she did take a long time to accept her responsibilities, I felt that she made the right choice.
If you enjoy steampunk and alternate histories, The Immortal Empire series may be for you. It is highly recommended that this series be read in order.

The goblins – yes goblins – control the underground. Those that venture below the city rarely return as goblins do like their meat. The vampires and werewolves jostle for power and live among the humans. Add in a few human wannabes – and a few flamboyant entertainers and this is quite the colorful book.
This is an interesting world, complete with its own vocabulary. Thankfully, there is a very useful glossary at the back of the book. If you are reading this on an e-reader, it may be awkward flipping back and forth to the glossary. The author has some pretty intriguing gadgets worthy of a steampunk world. Funnily enough, their mobile devices are called rotaries. Cute!
The Queen is Dead continues the story of Xandra Vardon, who is now trying to deal with her new responsibilities. Actually, for most of the story, she is trying to avoid her new position. Xandra must deal with all sorts of personal problems including the disappearance of her brother Val. Xandra is aided by the rather hunky Vex, her werewolf lover. The story takes the reader on an action packed romp through a 1930’s alternate history steampunked London.
I enjoyed this story and I loved Xandra. For a young woman, she had a lot of important decisions to make. Xandra valued her humanity; she feared becoming a monster. While she did take a long time to accept her responsibilities, I felt that she made the right choice.
If you enjoy steampunk and alternate histories, The Immortal Empire series may be for you. It is highly recommended that this series be read in order.

Kate Locke's second book in the Immortal Empire trilogy is a bloody good scream of fun set in a monster filled alternative England where Queen Victoria, the ruler of the place is a vampire, the human league is involved in terrorist attacks against the werewolves and a new queen of the goblins is rocking the joint. Its pretty good too. I missed the first book, but just bought it on Amazon and expect to read it shortly. So you have to get the back story while reading this novel.
It seems that Xandy, the newly crowned queen of the goblins, used to be considered a halfie, a half human half goblin, who worked for the Special Branch of Scotland Yard. However, she has now discovered that she is all goblin, and thus unable to serve Special Branch, but unlike most goblins she looks mostly human and can be outside in the sunlight. She can transform into a full goblin and has all of their strength and speed. However, she has developed a taste and need for red meat, preferably bloody and freshly killed.
Although elected queen of the goblins, she is not sure she wants the job, as she is not sure she wants to be all goblin, plus her new role does not sit that great with Queen Victoria, the vampire queen. Her boyfriend Vex is the leader of the werewolves.

An exciting, page-turning addition to the Immortal Empire series!
Xandra proved herself to be a kick ass heroine in the debut, but she's even more hardcore in the sequel. She's craving violence, ready to rip out a few throats, and becoming unapologetic about who and what she is. I absolutely loved it!
There is a lot of forward progress in this story regarding the changes in Xandra's life. Along with her new Goblin Queen status, she's learning to adjust to the new physical and psychological changes, including her increasing desire for flesh and blood and her violent temper.
She also finds herself in the middle of a game of politics. Each faction wants to align themselves with the Goblin Queen and this causes a lot of complications, especially with her boyfriend Vex. But despite the problems that arise within his pack, their relationship begins to strengthen and by the story's conclusion we witness some progress between them as well.
Aside from Xandra herself, what I loved most about this novel was the time spent with the goblins. They are explored more in depth and Xandra begins to realize that she should not fear her plague and that they should be valued and appreciated. Although they can be ruthless and deadly, her people are also very loyal and protective and smarter than she ever gave them credit for. I've become very fond of the plague's prince and I'm looking forward to spending more time with him in future installments.
I'll admit that I wasn't very interested in the story's main mystery with Xandra searching for her missing sibling. But there were many, many other things to enjoy and overall I thought this was a fantastic follow up to God Save the Queen!

I'd only been somewhat looking forward to continuing this series. I only had luke warm feelings for the characters with the exception of Vex. He kept me reading in the first novel because there was just something about him that was interesting. Xandra is still just as emotional and quick to act as she was in the first novel which tends to get her caught up in quite the mess.
In this book much like the first we have a family crisis and it seems only Xandra is the one who can save the day. At least now she has the backing of the Goblins now that she has discovered she is actually Goblin and not a Halvie as she was lead to believe her whole life. There are many things going on in her life that Xandra just can't and won't face because she just doesn't know which way to choose. Should she accept her place as the Goblin Queen and thereby not feel quite so guilty every time she asks for help from the prince, William, and his minions? Or does she attempt to distance herself from them and try to get her life back. When things turn on their head she realizes she must make a decision....and fast.
The novel was ok and left an ending open for the next book in the series. I'll likely read that one as well just because I'm a little curious now as to what will happen. This novel brought to light that the human league had begun slowly but surely to raise violence to the Aristocracy and it will be interesting to see all of this play out.
As far as steampunk goes once again not much here to really classify it as such, more paranormal than steampunk. Also there is still the annoying repetition of "Fang Me". Ugh find a new phrase and try changing it up once in a while!! Really cool cover though!

So..I read book 1 yesterday, and this morning I picked up book 2 and read like 200 pages before work. And then finished the book when I got home. And now, I do not have book 3, oh sad me. I totally need the book.
The goblin wants Xandra as their queen cos the surprise in book 1 was that she is a goblin! I did like that twist. And I really like the goblins. They are nice and they are crazy and digs into meat like animals.
Vex, eh, ok sure he is good, I like them together. I do like my weres. I just wonder how it will play out since she is goblin queen and is is alpha wolf.
The world is still amazing and I despair. Humans will never tolerate others. And most vamps are such asses. Halvies are used, so how on earth will everyone live happily ever after? I seriously can so no end to this. Other than rivers of blood that is.

Xandra Vardan, newly recognized as the Goblin Queen, gets drawn into her brother's investigation for Scotland Yard. Val has disappeared while investigating the kidnappings of various halvies from the famous club, Freak Show. Avery, their sister, came to Xandra to ask her help. Along with her boyfriend, Vex, the werewolf alpha, and her plague of goblins, led by Prince William, Xandra begins to realize the kidnappings are a cover for more sinister undertakings. The vampires are trying to breed a better monster. She manages to break up a horror show, where vampires feed on humans until they are dead, and then, after being kidnapped herself, Vex and William show up to rescue her and destroy the laboratory. Lots of action ensues! This is an entertaining series with a feisty heroine, a charming boyfriend and much mayhem.

Another great addition to the Immortal Empire series, a lot has changed since the first book.
Now considered a Queen of her own right, Xandra struggles with her family's approval, her subject's approval, conflicting parental interests and politics between the different species. With the only thing keeping her sane, is her werewolf boyfriend, she needs to find out what happened to her missing brother (it is a curious thing that in each book, a sibling of hers goes missing).
Add in the plot behind his abduction and you get a well rounded novel that has action, drama, suspense, romance and fantasy elements!

This was really good.
This one delves more into the experiments surrounding the halvies. Val, Xandra's brother, goes missing while investigating missing half-bloods. Avery, Xandra's sister, goes to her even though she is still pissed about what happened in the previous book, and comes to Xandra for help. From there it's a bit of investigating she's not part of the RG any more and must rely on her contacts, such as the goblins and Vex to help her uncover what happened to her brother. The story is interesting and I'm anxious to see where it goes.

Just as wonderful and fabulous as the first one! The world that the author has created is so great. In this one you really get to see how each faction operates and views the others, especially where Juliet is concerned. These moments, and the moments where Xandra finally gets to confront a few people that I was dying for her to get to, were definitely the best in the book. The tension and the emotion were so high in these moments that it would have been impossible to pry the book from my hands.
All in all, it was an amazing book and I loved it! As long as we don't have a love triangle in the next one I know it's going to be great too.

Very much like this world - A steampunk mash up of Victorian England with vampires, werewolves and goblins. Xandy, our heroine, is a little on the frustrating side sometimes, but more often than not she surprised me with a backbone of steel and a willingness to do the right thing, even at the cost of her own goals or well-being. Vex, is her perfect foil, he calms and supports her, and loves her no matter who/what she really is.
The unfolding history/reality of the goblins was done well. A good mystery. Still lots of factions, with agendas that remain unclear, which adds tension and interest.
Action, mystery, romance and a little fun - cool.

I like this series, and this book was as good as the first one. The focus of this book is Xandy's kidnapped brother and her efforts to find him, while she also wrestles with her new told as the goblin queen. I admit that I've never completely enjoyed the fact that the protagonist is a goblin. It's a bit of a stretch for me, and I'm not sure why. Regardless, I do find these books enjoyable and will be starting number three tomorrow.

Just as phenomenal as the first; I literally can't put these books down (I had the 3rd one sitting on the table in front of me to start immediately after finishing the 2nd!). Locke has me head over heels for these characters (I'm looking at you, Vex, Ophelia, and Xandra) and absolutely hooked on the plot lines. Seriously, my second favorite book series I've ever read.

Xandra has had a lot of changes in her life – from half-blooded Royal guard to goblin queen. Despite being monarch, she seems to have lost a lot; her family no longer trusts her, she’s lost her job, she’s lost her home, she’s earned the enmity of Queen Victoria herself, she’s become a tabloid sensation – and universally feared. And she still doesn’t know what she wants to be or become – she’s not ready to make those decisions.
But she doesn’t have much time to delay, not with her brother going missing, possibly falling victim to the same conspiracy that her mentor was part of; experimenting on unusual half bloods to see if they can be used to increase aristo numbers and tip the balance of power. With her own unprecedented goblinhood and her sister giving birth to a full blooded vampire, her family are prime targets for experimentation.
And, of course, Victoria is breathing down her neck, with the police following Xandra trying to find out what happened to her mentor. Being harassed by the police and demonised by the press doesn’t make investigating any easier
This series has one of the most original world settings we’ve come across in Urban Fantasy. The idea of a modern Steampunk – a 21st century world, with the immortal vampire Queen Victoria ruling over it – creates a really fascinating world when it comes to tone theme and aesthetics. We have many of the elements of the modern world and a similar level of technology, but all with a Victorian twist as the elites of the society are still from that era. So we have minidresses – with corsets. The technology is subtly different, there are mores of etiquette in high society that still have to be upheld. Yet all of this is done without a lot of info dumping, this different feel is given with a few descriptions of clothes, the way people talk and different words for things like motorbikes and mobile phones that make it clear what they are while still having a strong hint of a more steampunk aesthetic.
There’s a lot of research that has gone into this book making sure that the places visited are very close to actual London with the necessary changes for the setting. I particularly like references to obscure things like the church of St. Andrew by the Wardrobe.There is also a generally good maintenance of tone, keeping the Britishisms intact and the new vocabulary from the setting. Occasionally it does go over the top though – like the details of the geography are very accurate but also long winded and not strictly needed. Or a generally well done Xandra will spout long string of slang and profanity that is just a little excessive and fake – like her Britishness is really trying to be rammed home. I don’t know how noticeable it would be to someone who isn’t English, however.
There are a number of POC in this book and a lesbian couple who are just included without fanfare. They may not have a massive role, but they are there and fully integrated without undue comment or inference as well as a natural assumption that they’re going to get married and there’s no issue with that. While they’re background characters to a large degree, they’re refreshingly free from problematic tropes.
There’s also Penny, a transwoman. Penny isn’t a background character by any stretch and she plays a pretty major role in the story and is very valued by the whole cast, despite that she is a mixed bag of good points and fail points
On the plus side, none of the main characters misgender her or ever question her gender; anyone who does is seen as being extremely out of line and in strong need of a slap. Similarly the transphobia from her father is presented the same way. It’s also clear that her gender is not based on whether she is taking hormones or has had – or is pursuing - surgery or not.

I’ve already said I’m obsessed with this series, and this book fit right in. We’ve learned that Xandra is “extra special” beyond the usual half-blood, and that she’s been picked (or born to) the position of Queen of the Goblins by the goblin-prince William. Her friend Penny (another half-blood, half-sister to her brother Val and a drag queen) has noticed halfies gone missing from the cabaret club she works at, and Xandra’s sister Valentine (heir to the title and Inspector at Scotland Yard) has gone missing – last seen when Xandra’s clues led her to a “horror show’ where humans are the entertainment as Aristos feed upon them until death. There are also questions (and some stories) about laboratories that are experimenting with some of the halfies, in fact, Xandra’s sister Fiona, living with her mother in Bedlam, was one of the experimented upon. There’s a question about Churchill’s disappearance, his never-ending obsession with Xandra was one of the causes of his death – but these questions lead straight to Xandra’s door.
DeDe is truly dead now – and Xandra is still feeling guilty about that – for it was at the hands of Churchill, her mentor, her protector and the man she believed was on her side – until she knew he wasn’t. There’s a piece of Xandra that is all too willing to become self-absorbed and take on the blames for everyone else’s troubles – but she’s getting better at sorting things out – even as she is denying the full power of her goblin side, and desperate to find Val, she’s captured as well.
This is the part of the story where we get more answers to long-held questions, even as more arrive. Vex is still stalwart and by her side – providing a calming influence on her and chastising her for going off half-cocked and not considering consequences. There are reasons that people are being taken and experimented upon – and some of that information is coming to light. But with Victoria gunning for her and not one but two potential murders in which she is a suspect, the detective following her a solid pain in her ass, and the obvious threats to her life – she's still got her mother and sister in Bedlam looking to lead an uprising against the monarchy.... it’s pretty full on with new sides of Xandra, William, Vex and the threats coming out frequently.
Narration for this installment is provided by Moira Quirk and she picked up smoothly where the last book left off. A bit different in inflection and tone for Xandra, with more distinction for other characters, the accents, emotional inflections and the pauses to catch up (as small as they were) made a huge impact and kept me glued to the story. Again, the writing isn’t perfect and often if feels like info-dump as things are brought in and explained – but this is a story that you ‘go with’ the flow – and the twisty bits are often unraveled (or explained) in the final epilogue – where a dictionary / footnote-like series of terms and twists are laid out. I’m still obsessed with this series – as of this writing I’m on my second go-through of the books, and if you want non-stop action with a heroine who is far from perfect with attitude, skills and a great sense of family and humor – this is the one for you

This is the part of the story where we get more answers to long-held questions, even as more arrive. Vex is still stalwart and by her side – providing a calming influence on her and chastising her for going off half-cocked and not considering consequences. There are reasons that people are being taken and experimented upon – and some of that information is coming to light. But with Victoria gunning for her and not one but two potential murders in which she is a suspect, the detective following her a solid pain in her ass, and the obvious threats to her life – she's still got her mother and sister in Bedlam looking to lead an uprising against the monarchy.... it’s pretty full on with new sides of Xandra, William, Vex and the threats coming out frequently.
Narration for this installment is provided by Moira Quirk and she picked up smoothly where the last book left off. A bit different in inflection and tone for Xandra, with more distinction for other characters, the accents, emotional inflections and the pauses to catch up (as small as they were) made a huge impact and kept me glued to the story. Again, the writing isn’t perfect and often if feels like info-dump as things are brought in and explained – but this is a story that you ‘go with’ the flow – and the twisty bits are often unraveled (or explained) in the final epilogue – where a dictionary / footnote-like series of terms and twists are laid out. I’m still obsessed with this series – as of this writing I’m on my second go-through of the books, and if you want non-stop action with a heroine who is far from perfect with attitude, skills and a great sense of family and humor – this is the one for you

Well definitely an upgrade from the previous book and like I said while reading this one, it seems that most of the things that irritated me in the previous one (whiny, petulant, bratty heroine), too good to be true/Gary Stu/unconvincing alpha wolf of a hero, no sparks between them and bad editing) are either gone or improved so much that are now mildly annoying. Not perfect but I enjoyed it very much.
Xandra has grow on me but also she's maturing. She's still a work in progress but I don't find her childish anymore and unlike the first installment here she thinks before she acts -well not always, but honestly I can't blame her for the times Alexandra acted impulsively because very few people would have kept it together under the circumstances.
She FINALLY thinks for herself! One of the things I hated about her was her bigotry which was understandable to a certain extent because of her upbringing and the society she was leaving in, but for me her blind belief and her disposition to not question anything was mind-boggling. Thankfully all that is gone and in this story I saw a woman ready to challenge her old views and accept the bitter reality, embrace new friends that in the past labeled as monsters and not only accept them but realise that they are far more honorable and caring than people she consider dear to her. One of her more endearing qualities and her saving grace in God Save the Queen -pun not intended - was her devotion to her family. Here we see it in full display and not only that but she also tries to amend her past bad behaviour and gap the bridge between her siblings and her new life. Her ways remain still often unpolished - her confrontation with Queen V was a bit...funny and cringe-worthy - but she's starting to understand the political game and how she must play it, she has the chops to become a force to be reckoned with and not just to be feared.
Recently I have told a lot of GR friends that my tolerance for sappy romance in books is rapidly diminishing, thankfully my patience was never tetsted here. Xandra's relationship with Vex is important but the plot wasn't overwhelmed by it. And let me say he's an impressive dude! In this one he really convinced he's an Alpha, not a stupidly macho one but a wise one who knows that sometimes retorting to violence must be the final choise. But where Vex really won me over was in the way he was with Xandra. She sees her as an equal and while he feels the urge to protect her he doesn't treat her like a delicate china doll. He knows when she needs space and when to tell her that she's acting like a martyr:
"Shall I fetch you a cross for you to nail yourself upon?"
And I'm beginning to see sparks people!!
Last but not least of course a mention for the worldbuilding. I still don't think when it comes to steampunk (light) is the most original one but is extremelly well executed. Locke has put quite the effort to materialize her world and seems to have done quite the research to make the reason for vampires, goblins, werewolves and halvies to walk among usplausible.
Overall a very interesting and fun book to read! And now excuse me 'cause I have the next one waiting for me ;)

God Save the Queen was a fantastic start to Kate Locke's alternate history urban fantasy series so I've been looking forward to getting my hands on The Queen is Dead ever since I first read it. If the stunning covers for this series aren't enough to convince you to read them then the mash up of genres should be, throw in a hint of steampunk, vampires, werewolves and a heroine who has just found out she is the goblin queen and you're definitely onto a winner! Everything I loved about the first book was back again in this 2nd instalment and it's left me desperate to read Long Live the Queen when it publishes in November.
Xandra had quite a shock at the end of the last book when she discovered that she is in fact a goblin rather than the halvie that she always thought she was. The goblins are the most ferocious of the supernatural races and the ones who are most feared by the rest of the population. She has always thought of them as monsters so her world view has taken quite a battering thanks to her newly acquired status as their queen. Not only is she questioning herself and worrying over her new abilities but she also finds that she has become a political pawn that each of the different factions all want to win into their corner, she is going to have to pick her allies wisely though or she'll just end up in an even bigger mess. After everything that Xandra went through in the first book to protect her siblings I have to say I was a bit disappointed in them for abandoning her when she needed their support in return, it's just a good job she had Vex to lean on. Of course the fact that they have been ignoring her for the last few months doesn't stop Xandra diving straight into the investigation when she discovers that her brother Val is missing no matter how much trouble it might get her into. She is the kind of girl who will protect her loved ones at any cost and I can't fault her for that.
I love the way things have developed between Xandra and Vex and I think she sums up my feelings for him perfectly when she says "One of the things I adored about him was he didn't go all chest-thumping on me and treat me like a delicate flower. I knew he'd rip apart anyone who tried to hurt me, but he'd give me first crack at it." I love the fact that although he is an alpha he doesn't try to take charge of every situation. He is supportive and protective of her without being smothering and I like the way he is so calm and centred while Xandra is struggling to come to terms with the revelations of her heritage. Vex obviously loves Xandra for who she is and he is the only one who has always been there for her when she needed him.
Another thing I really enjoyed was getting to learn more about the goblins, we get to see a different side to them as Xandra reluctantly spends more time with the plague and I've come to really like the goblin prince. There have also been a few interesting developments with Vex's werewolf pack and it will be interesting to see how that plays out in the next book. I'm thoroughly enjoying this series and I'm sure anyone who enjoyed the first book is going to love this instalment just as much. I can't wait to see what happens next!

The Queen is Dead is the second novel in Kate Locke’s The Immortal Empire trilogy, an urban fantasy series that reimagines the Victorian era, but with lots of undead and otherwise plagued creatures. The protagonist, Xandra Vardan, is having a hard time dealing with the fact that she’s the queen of the goblins. Until recently, she didn’t even know that she was a goblin, and was only familiar with stereotypes about goblins snatching children. But as Xandra found out in the previous book, she was the product of genetic experimentation, which makes her a somewhat unusual David Bowie type of goblin who can go outdoors, survive in sunlight, and hide her fangs when in polite company.
When Xandra’s brother Val disappears, she knows that something is very wrong. She suspects that Val has been taken for his blood, and that because Xandra and her sister both had unusual qualities, that he will too. Xandra’s treading in dangerous waters, and she knows she can’t do it alone, so she enlists the goblins and her werewolf boyfriend for help. As she does so, she’s still trying to live in both worlds, but it isn’t working. Her former friends and colleagues want nothing to do with her now that they know she’s a goblin, the goblins want her to accept her crown, and her boyfriend’s pack wants the goblins and werewolves to forge a formal alliance. And as much as Xandra doesn’t want to deal with any of this, she’s got no choice. It’s kind of like a coming of age story, except instead of a story where you overcome some major obstacle and feel like more of an adult, you’re already an adult even though you don’t feel like it and are just trying to figure out what the hell is going on and why people are trying to kill you.
I’m a big fan of the way the book is designed–it’s a smallish hardcover that reminds me of the Nancy Drew books I had as a kid.
Sometimes you want deep literature, and sometimes you just want something fun. The Queen is Dead definitely falls in the latter category, and I loved it. It’s a little bit predictable, and it has a pulpy feel, but that doesn’t really detract from the story. It had also been a couple years since I read the first book in the series, but I was able to jump into this one without a problem.
