I hope they are able to contain the fires soon. Some of the hardest hit places in Oregon have suffered some serious damage because infrastructure over there wasn't built to withstand temperatures 40 degrees F over normal (about 23 C higher than usual--from average summer temperatures in the 20s to up in the higher 40s C.) I realize there are hotter places that can go into the 50s C at times.

I remember a couple of years ago reading that roads in UK were melting at temps that here are considered quite usual in the summer. When infrastructure isn't designed for the heat there can be lasting damage.

Yes, and this can happen with much colder temperatures than normal as well. There is a lot of planning that goes into these things. In places that have a large temperature difference from winter to summer there are regular problems, but not nearly this severe.

Here it happens with the rain. There are floods almost every year and politicians have about a 3 week window during the aftermath when people are willing to agree to the massive expenditure needed to create infrastructure that can deal with 90 percent of the annual rainfall occurring in a 48hr period.
The same for snow. People don't have enough warm clothes and blankets (or knowledge) to cope with keeping warm when the electricity is cut off even though the temps are above freezing.

Yes, you aren't equipped for a lot of rain at once, nor for snow. Even where I grew up in Canada schools closed when it snowed because the buses didn't have snow tires, etc, but it usually snows at least once per winter--usually wet snow because it's not far below freezing. I grew up north-west of Vancouver. However, it doesn't harm the infrastructure there.
That said, very heavy rains have led to mud slides in some places even though we get a lot of rain (but nothing like the Great Bear Rainforest in the same province). I think they are more likely to happen when trees have been cleared and there is housing, etc, but am not sure.

The men’s floor exercise from Toyko - Israel won gold!!
Very exciting.
Now back to the grindstone.

I'm back at work now: Friday my daughter discussed her Thesys in Computer Sciences Engineering - magna cum laude! - and Saturday with my husband we drove her to Milan where she will start her Master Degree in Robotics!!!
I feel a little bit lonely...

Indeed! Listening to her dissertationi was amazing! She programmed something for PEPPER, with people with impaired vision problems in mind

Hi Christine, why don't you set up a thread for what day it is? I'm sure people would love to see what their birthday lands on? I think my birthday lands on international chocolate day.

Lovely
Lovely
Well, my partner got his OT (Occupational Therapy) test, and although he still can't move his right fingers since the stroke, there's enough improvement in the arm from the last round of therapy that the insurance will approve another. YAY!!
Had to take a second consulting job at night to cover the insurance co-pays, but I am thrilled to have that problem continue as opposed to having the therapy stop!
Other than that, just enjoying life with my cats and hoping for the best.

Happy to hear the PT is working, if slowly.
Sad that the co-pays cost so much.
And loving the gorgeous cat pic.
