This challenge runs January 01, 2017 to December 31, 2017

As the goal is to read a greater diversity and number of books, a book may only be counted once in this challenge, but may be used in other challenges (Monthly mini, seasonal, etc).

This discussion is for the 2017 Ultimate Challenge created by Pop Sugar. This year’s challenge is set up a bit different than the previous two years. There are 40 "basic" challenges, plus another 12 "advanced." As with last year, I will post links to lists or websites that should make it easier to find some of your challenge books.

Please remember that this challenge is meant to be fun. Instead of worrying about completing every category, try to set a manageable goal for you. For example, my goal for the 2016 challenge was to read books for half the categories, which I did. Another fun way to approach it is to see how many books with a mystery element you can apply to the different categories (easier for some categories than others, but a good way to shake up your TBR pile). Personally, I think some of the books in the "advanced" section will be easier to knock off than some in the "basic," so feel free to choose from both sections.

Good luck, and have fun!

Here is this year’s list, which you can copy and paste onto your personal challenge thread, if you wish.

Teresa | 88 comments I think I'm going to skip next year. I got a little burned out on "challenges" this year. It was totally me and no external pressure but I felt like I was reading to complete the challenge and not reading what I wanted to. I may during the year pick two or three from the list to expand my reading horizons.

I think I'll get this challenge in the same way the last year: trying to fit my reading in it, and some additional, so I'm in and let's see how the year goes.

There is, but sometimes people want the camaraderie of a challenge without having to join another group. '-)

Any of the Carolyn Hart Death on Demand books mentions a myriad of other mysteries. That's probably where I will select one for this category.

Julesy | 1411 comments I was hoping to focus more on books I want to read rather than fitting books into challenges for 2017. However, I couldn't resist this ultimate challenge. ;-) I will try it this year but won't make it a top priority.

Julesy | 1411 comments Does anyone know what these 2 items mean?

[ ] A book with a subtitle - Could I get some examples?

[ ] A book with an unreliable narrator - Does this indicate an audiobook where the narrator is inconsistent in their narration?

I looked up the unreliable narrator for my list, and from the examples I think it means a narrator who might have a vested interest in the action and therefore is not trustworthy. For instance, Nick in the Great Gatsby. I'm reading Endless Night, selected after an internet search for possibilities.

Oh, I see. Basically a third person's point of view within the book that may be biased. Thanks, Kellene!

Kimberly | 678 comments I'm in! I love these challenges because it gets me out of my comfort zone. :) I'll try to post updates in this thread, but fell behind last year. I'll keep an updated list in my challenge thread, though, located here.

message 20: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly | 678 comments FYI, I have two books that would fit the Advanced category of a book based on mythology (found them in the Kindle store). :) I just read one that fit a December Mini Challenge category, Betrayal by Mayandree Michel, which is about a teenager who finds out she is a descendant of Zeus. The other is a mystery called Out of Practice Aphrodite by S.E. Babin, which is about the goddess of love searching for a stolen item of the gods. These are just the first books in their series, so that adds even more possibilities. :)

A book with a subtitle basically means a book with two titles -- the second usually following a colon. They're easiest to find among classics or nonfiction books. Examples from my own shelves:

1. Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus
2. Slaughterhouse Five: or The Children's Crusade: A Duty-Dance with Death
3. Middlemarch: A Study of Provincial Life
4. Peter Pan, or, The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up
5. Twelfth Night, or What You Will
6. Vanity Fair: A Novel Without a Hero
7. Escaping into the Open: The Art of Writing True
8. Lorna Doone: A Romance of Exmoor
9. Warm Springs: Traces of a Childhood at FDR's Polio Haven
10. Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, A Young Man and Life's Greatest Lesson
11. Black Elk Speaks: Being the Life Story of a Holy Man of the Oglala Sioux
12. Girl Sleuth: Nancy Drew and the Women Who Created Her
13. A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail
14. The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History
15. Truck: A Love Story
16. When Books Went to War: The Stories that Helped Us Win World War II
17. Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption
18. The Christmas Chronicles: The Legend of Santa Claus
19. The Poisoner's Handbook: Murder and the Birth of Forensic Medicine in Jazz Age New York

I've read one book on the list. I finished The Fixer by Bernard Malamud for a book on a difficult topic. This book takes place in Tsarist Russia during the Jewish pogroms. It is quite difficult to read about the injustice and the brutality as well as the stupid things people believed about the Jews.

Valerie | 440 comments If you are looking for a steampunk book. Nefertiti's Heart (free on Kindle) was pretty good. It is a mystery, though not a cozy. Has some sex scenes, so if that is not your bag, skip it. But, I enjoyed the story, and the mystery...and, the price was right. Not normally a fan of the genre, but this one was interesting.
