HomeInMyShoes Keep it. It's yours now. Maple is getting older now 14 years and a few months and I can't really imagine life without her around. She's such a sweety.

In other news, my four-year old was out exploring with his friends and they found a dead bird so we had to have an impromptu burial for it just before bedtime last night. Why do I get the gross tasks?

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments I actually thought about Maple as a name if it's a girl and if I keep it :)

My other two cats are Charlie and Nala. Charlie is 12 and Nala is 8. I don't know what I'll do without Charlie. Nala... Take her or leave her, lol. She's a brat. I love her, but she's no Charlie.

message 2203: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I had a manx cat named Mabel. She was a sweetie. I miss her. :(

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments You now belong to the kitten...congratulations, you are blessed. Greyhounds are great to, I mean a dog that can run 40mph but prefers to sleep on the couch with his head in your lap is a wonderful animal.

Just introduce the dog and the new kitten...one the kitten teaches the dog to be his/her bed all will be well.

It took us a good two weeks to name Maple. But the name totally suits her. She's from Aylmer, Quebec (land of Maple trees and maple syrup.) She is tortoise in colour with one definitely mapley-coloured toe on her right front paw. She also has one perennially completely white and rather thick whisker while all the others are black. It's so cute and so distinctive. It fell out once and promptly grew back.

You can see her and her whisker here.

message 2208: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes She is a cutey. We got her from a family that had a litter of eight or nine kittens. Maple just kept coming back to us while we visited so we figured she had to come with us. Hard to believe she is 14 years old now (she was 10 in the picture.)

message 2209: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments I just thought Maple was a cute name, it doesn't really fit this kitten. It's grey and stripey... And I still can't tell if it's a boy or a girl, I looked at pictures online but I keep changing my mind.

Here's a picture of me and the kitty.. Please excuse my appearance, it was raining and cold, my hair is all frizztastic, and I didn't know I was being photographed:

(view spoiler)

message 2210: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments Now you all see why I couldn't just abandon it when it hopped along after me when I tried to walk away.

*sigh*

Damn it. I got kittens on the brain. All I want to do is leave work so I can go home and see how it's doing. Lay on the floor and let it crawl all over me, purring and cuddling...

Kittens.

Why do they have to be so fricken cute?

Leland (lelandhw) | 63 comments Well, it won't be long before it will be quite obvious if it's a boy. I had a tabby cat looked almost just like that. I called her "M" cause it's written on her forehead. Haha She had a spotted tummy. Does yours? We'll all be looking forward to your new kitten stories. :)

message 2215: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments Since she was abandoned if it's a she maybe you should call her, Miss Peregrine. You know for the abandoned children.

message 2222: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments Okay. First off... I LOVE the names! And Mooney and Padfoot are so cute! I have a special love for black and white cats. I've had two, and they were by far my favorite cats, before our boys of course. And second... Or third... My boys are so jealous of your tree house. We have the single ones. And a sort of taller one but not like that. Maybe some day.

message 2223: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Moony and Padfoot are from the same litter, so I often call them "the twins". I think this is one of the few times all three were on the tree at the same time. :>

message 2224: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) My cats would love that tree... but the Boy wouldn't approve. We already have more cat furniture than human furniture.

message 2225: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I think the tree was one of the first pieces of new furniture we bought when we moved into the house.

message 2226: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Nicki, that sentence evokes such imagery for me!

We're dog people, but I often take care of my neighbours cats. She once had five. Sadly, we lost two this past year and are now down to three. I didn't grow up with cats, so don't understand their mysterious ways as many of you do, but I'm becoming quite fond of the little girls and guy. Hers are quite agile, except when they've had a good feed of catnip. I can see the three rolling and desperately scratching to hold on to the tree!

Thanks. You gave me such a laugh!

message 2227: by Elise (new)

Elise Kleuskens Can I use this place to rant for a while?

I have this colleague who is a pain in the ass!! Like, big time! He is struggling with himself psychically, and I understand that maybe that causes him to be snappy, but please go see a shrink and figure it out? I cannot stand walking around on tiptoes, because he might yell at everything I say or do! He somehow takes up everything I say as a personal insult to him. Please, you are not even worth so much attention!! It's not fair that I should be the one to be constantly watching my moves and words, because he is so damn unreasonable. And it's been months. Go do something about it already!!!! ARGH!

So then I went home all mad and it started to rain real hard and of course I was on my bicycle and soaked. But then I took a nice hot bath and calmed down. I think I will just refrain from talking to him for a while unless it is really necessary. And hope that he will somehow get himself back together. SOON!

Ok, so that is out of my system! Back to the pets topic!
I got two lovely rabbits. Both are very very unintelligent, but it is great to watch them jump around and play with each other :) (By the way I named them Buffy and Faith. I've got two bunny vampire slayers ;) )

Thanks :)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments Good news... Half day at work today, woooooooooooooooo!

Bad news... Took the half day so that I'd have time to scrub my filthy house down and grocery shop in preparation of hosting a board game day tomorrow. Oh, and make a bunch of candles too. I decided I needed a new hobby, so now I make candles in mason jars. Adulthood...

I was trying to figure out if I'd rather be at work or at home cleaning, and I honestly couldn't decide. I think I'm leaning towards cleaning though :P

message 2238: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments Also! The kitten is a girl, we named her Quinn (we wanted Harley as in Harley Quinn, but Harley is too close to Charlie so we went with Quinn). She's healthy, no feline leukemia.. I think we are going to keep her... :)

message 2239: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes You know you're going to keep her.

message 2240: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments I'm happy for you. :)
And Quinn too. ;)

Adorable name, BTW. I agree, I like Quinn more than Harley, but you can call her Harley Quinn when she gets into trouble. Lol.

message 2241: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments Quinn works better for nicknames too. I like to be able to add -ie to pets names, because I'm lame like that. I like nicknames.

My dog Rook... I always call him Rookie, Rick, or Rickie. Never Rook. Mostly Rookie.

Nala is Nalie, Nals, Nala-bear...

Charlie is Charles, Charlie-bear, Charles Montgomery Burns.. I dunno, he's a hard one. Mostly he's just Charlie because it already ends in -ie.

Quinn has already become Quinnie. I'm sure I'll attach "bear" to that as well, I do with the other cats for whatever reason. Quinnie-bear :)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I like the name Quinn, too. And I like the character. You'll have to get another cat so he can be the Joker.

i do that, too. Benji is almost never Benji. He's Benji-bear or pooka. His full name is Lord Benjamin Joseph Puppytons.

My Results:

You could read the entire Game of Thrones collection in 73 days. (351 days faster than the average person!)

Your reading speed is 411 words per minute.

If you read for 1 hour each day,
you could get through 91 books per year

(based on the average length of a bestseller - 99,390 words).

message 2246: by Dawn, Dawnerys, Mother of Modding (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) | 860 comments LOL, I'm a slow reader. I always knew that. I could read faster, but my comprehension goes way down. I get reading ADD if I try to go too fast, and I don't really pay attention.

So... my reading speed is 285 words per minute.

If I read for 1.5 hours each day, I could get through 94 books in a year.

I could read the entire GoT series in 70 days. Which seems accurate, seeing as though I re-read it before Dance and it took about 2 months.

Surprising that's 354 days faster (according to the test) than the average person... I guess people just can't commit to more than 10 - 30 minutes of reading a day? I always read 1.5 hours if not more.. An hour during my lunch break and a half hour or more before bed. Plus unscheduled evening reading of up to 2 hours, but that's not every day.

We have the same reading speed, but mine said finish in 119 days. Is that because I chose 1 hour a day?

Probably, yeah. Mine was originally 70s days when I said I read for an hour and 45 minutes instead of an hour, so time is definitely a factor.
